Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday are big market days in NYC. In the Highbridge & Concourse area in the Bronx, markets are springing up around every corner so that the community can have access to fresh, affordable produce.
As some of you may know, the Bronx has been facing health challenges for decades. Now, the city, the community, and local organizations are taking charge of their diets.
Even though it’s only a couple of stands, the Jerome Ave & 170th St. market is a beacon of life and possibility. At any given time, there are dozens of people picking through red onions, purple carrots, romaine lettuce, beets, and the list goes on. There are juices, an abundance of fruit, and a cooking demonstrations.
For $14, I bought 6 red potatoes, two tomatoes, a bunch of purple carrots, 1 onion, 2 peppers, 1 cucumber, 3 eggplants, 1 zucchini, and a head of red lettuce. Be sure to check out any market that’s near you!
