Alternative Facts
A “premise” is a principle or a statement which YOU BELIEVE TO BE TRUE. A sound premise will lead to a sound “claim”.
A claim answers the “why?” questions and is what you argue is the best possible answer(s) given the evidence available, arguments from key thinkers who have made the same or similar claims and commonly accepted ideas and/or principles.
A “fact” is a principle, statement or a piece of information as having objective reality.
A fact and a premise are not the same thing. If you are presenting information as fact when it is not, then you are presenting something that you believe to be true. Your claims may have different evidence or none at all. Your claims may be derived from arguments by experts in the subject matter or not. Your claims may be commonly accepted or not at all. Either way, you must be presenting a new fact or a falsehood to the primary fact. Both facts cannot be true just like our moon cannot be a natural satellite and a planet at the same time.
If you are adamant that your fact is correct when it is not, are you really claiming an alternative fact, or just a lie?
We must be careful in this twitter and “fake news” age. I feel like we all need to rethink and relearn what it means to deal with facts, claims and premises if we are to engage in relevant dialogue to explain our arguments.
Vote of Confidence
Ford Motors cancels $1.6bn Mexico plant, a move which Americans can rejoice and take comfort in with the notion that American made products are also going to be American built as well. Why is this a problem? It isn’t in the slightest. Every corporation should endeavour build the skill set of their employees, excel in services and in the manufacture of goods in their country of origin. There is something uniquely patriotic and rewarding to hear those “Made in” words when it comes from your home country.
There is one small problem however, and that is business.
Companies essentially exist to make goods and services in exchange for money. Every company that is dependent on growth delivers goods and services at such a price point so as to maintain a profit. Again, there is nothing new about this and wrong with it either. If a company doesn’t make profit, it will inevitably loose money and wither away into history books.
Ford is a great pioneering company that needs to make profit in order to stay relevant in the automotive industry. One way to do this is by reducing its overall costs. So when Ford made the decision to invest in a Mexico plant, it did so with the intention of reducing costs in order to maintain a profit. The fact that it now has backtracked on this strategy has nothing to do with the strategy itself - but with the political fear that comes with Donald Trump. The feat of retaliation by Trump on businesses who seek to cut costs by expatriating goods and services, in Ford’s mind, must cost the $1.6bn they were willing to invest and without being able to read into the future, not worth the risk.
Shame on Trump for being a bully on the business model. As a business man, I highly doubt that all his investments were 100% American through and through. I bet at least once he choose Chinese over American because of cost.
Shame on Ford for making the excuse that “…the decision was the "more favourable US business environment that we see under President-elect Trump and some of the pro-growth policies that he’s been talking about”.“
Apple’s Tim Cook made the strategic decision to bring the Mac manufacture/assembly back to the US independently of the political environment at the time of that decision. Apple didn’t need a bully to corner them into that decision- and you know what, if it doesn’t work out, I’m sure Apple won’t admit they were wrong and start manufacturing/assembling the Mac again in China for the good of the business and ultimately the consumer.
"vote of confidence that he [Trump] can deliver on these things,” ~ CEO Ford
A company depending on politics doesn’t, in my view, have the fundamental core principles of what it stands for in the business that it’s in. Politicians come and go. The Constitution is absolute and is the foundation and likewise so are a company’s principles. Ford (and all companies out there) should not have made decisions based on what a “politician” thinks they can or can’t deliver. Such a bad business move.
SUPER MARIO RUN
I think for Nintendo’s first iOS game this is a great and welcome achievement. The graphics are bold and take advantage of the retina displays which is always a good start. The (free) levels are balanced enough- not too long or short- and the one hand gameplay is a much better strategy for these kind of platform games which made me come back for more(try playing Sonic CD on your iPhone for example to see what I mean).
I’ve played as much free game as I can on the iPhone but when I switched to my iPad, it treated me as a new player. I’d like to be able to play on one device and continue on another; after all that what Game Centre on iOS was all about wasn’t it? Perhaps the approach was to utilise the “My Nintendo” account approach but do you really want another account to manage? For this reason reason alone, I give it 4 out of 5.
For those complaining about the price, remember a Nintendo came can cost you at least £30 upwards on any console. I know you get a physical copy for that price but £7.99 is good enough for a reputable game which will be maintained through the iOS development (unlike other apps which lack maintenance).
Regarding the always on connection to play, I understand that it’s for security reasons and you could understand Nintendo’s position on that. A lot of games require internet connection primarily for advertising so I think it’s one aspect of the game we can live with.
In Short: if you love MARIO, you’d feel at home with this game. Let’s GO!!!
Fire Walking Update ~£5000 Raised
Email from the organisers on our recent fire walk challenge:
"Good morning,
Firstly, apologies for not having got back in touch with you sooner - with the Council’s last-minute cancellation of the Fireworks display and the implications this had for the Firewalk it has taken us a little longer than usual to finalise our costs etc.and get the event closed off.
Obviously the cancellation of the Fireworks display had major implications for the success of the event - particularly as we had to cancel our bucket collection within the footprint of the event which was expected to play host to around 10,000 people.
However, I am delighted to be able to tell you that despite the unfortunate circumstances, thanks to your efforts the event still raised over £5,000 towards our work supporting local people with learning disabilities. We are absolutely thrilled with this as it will allow us to make a real difference and empower the lives of the people we support. If anyone does still have any sponsorship to hand-in could I ask that you get this to me by the end of next week (December 23rd) so that we can finalise all the finances around the event. Many thanks again for your support and understanding of the last minute changes that we had to make to event - please spread the word about the event as we will certainly be bringing the Firewalk back again in 2017. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.“

Matching Socks
How many hours have been taken out of your life trying to matching socks?
Rational enough for @RichardDawkins then it should be for the rest of us methinks! Perhaps if we eliminated some of the wasted time in pursuit of our vanity we'd have more time for other constructive things. Let's stop shaving next!!

Knowledge Mapping
An interesting blog from Mindmeister. The product aside, the principle of mind mapping is a valuable tool to organise knowledge and product development in a synergistically visial way.

Fidel Castro
Apparently Donald J Trump (DJT) said the following although I cannot find the actual source:
"Today, the world marks the passing of a brutal dictator who oppressed his own people for nearly six decades. Fidel Castro’s legacy is one of firing squads, theft, unimaginable suffering, poverty and the denial of fundamental human rights.
While Cuba remains a totalitarian island, it is my hope that today marks a move away from the horrors endured for too long, and toward a future in which the wonderful Cuban people finally live in the freedom they so richly deserve.
Though the tragedies, deaths and pain caused by Fidel Castro cannot be erased, our administration will do all it can to ensure the Cuban people can finally begin their journey toward prosperity and liberty. I join the many Cuban Americans who supported me so greatly in the presidential campaign, including the Brigade 2506 Veterans Association that endorsed me, with the hope of one day soon seeing a free Cuba.
Donald J. Trump "
I won't advocate the cruel and unpopular things Castro has committed throughout his reign and do not want to take any of the sense of relief the Cuban people are feeling at his passing and at the thought of new horizons ahead of them. That said, it's hypocritical for DJT, a man infused with corruption, greed, vanity, arrogance and conflicting self interests to make any remarks on what he thinks are in the best interests for Cuba.
Castro (and others) took it upon himself to overthrow what was seen to be a corrupted dictator in Fulgencio Batista in 1959. A man, in Castros eyes, who probably embodied corruption much like DJT does.
For twenty-five years Batista ruled Cuba with an iron fist, and the full blessing and endorsement of the United States government, who feared a social and economic revolution and saw him as a stabilizing force with respect for American interests.
The fact is, Castro sought to overthrow a Government which he saw as corrupt and replaced it with one which we know with the benefit of hindsight and political experience does not work in the long run. So long as humanity continues to evolve with aspirations, ambitions, greed, laziness, selfish, lies and a whole bunch of other nouns embodied in our psyche (and DJT's) there is no room for Totalitarian ideals save for novels and academics.
I can't imagine if Batista was allowed to govern for 60 years as Castro did he would be considered a hero in the history books. He did however have the backing of the US- something that Castro didn't and that makes the US very itchy. The issue is Batista only had 25 years to Castros 60 so Batistas shortcomings seem to be forgotten. The victims of Castro are chronicled extensively yet little or no reference to the victims of the US or Batista are really discussed. No one in the current press is really making effort to explain why Castro did what he did. You'll probably have to go the banana wars era between 1898-1934 to begin to make sense of it.
People died under Batistas reign, and the US knew this and most likely chose to ignore it so long as their interests in the region were upheld. Who knows, perhaps the US administration would have eventually overthrown Batista if they saw him as a threat or deviating from their original relationship. That is a thread of speculative history for a parallel universe.
We do know that 638 attempts on Castros live were made and a lot of them were very creative. Statistically, at least 1% must have been carried out with US involvement. The CIA would understandably deny this. It would be abhorrent to think that if Cuba carried out 6 assassination attempts on any American president, not to consider that as an act of terrorisim and war. Who gave America the right to decide they can replace world leaders if they don't abide by their values? There certainly isn't a democratic referendum on whether the current administration asks the question whether they should and must. President Bush certainly didn't have one with regards to Saddam Hussein (he would have overruled it and NATO anyway).
"I think if you expose America to the same lens, you would have a stack of crimes that would overshadow what Fidel Castro's done." -Dr Denise Baden (BBC interview)
Castros reign has separated families and brought hardship to thousands of people. Being a leader for 60 years does not inject new ideas and reforms by new generations and ultimately hurts more people than saves. There is no going back from that and anyone claiming he was flawless is dilusional. He did have principles and stuck to them. That is a nobel leadership quality even though he did not allow (to his error of arrogant judgement perhaps) democratic feedback which is necessary with a varied population of self and common interests. What is left now is a vacuum as Cubans wake up to a future without Castro and to a disruptive future not seen probably since the independence from Spain. One can only hope that the Cuban future will not tainted by US, Russian or Chinese influences and that they may find their own way.
"Hasta la victoria, siempre" in principle was never wrong. It just needs to be modernised "a lo Cubano"!

Understanding Colour Discord
Considering the particular extract from the following link:
"… commonly referred to as ‘colour clashing’, colour discord commonly occurs when two colours that are widely separated on the colour wheel are paired together. Discordant colours create a muddy or ‘vibrating’ effect that makes it a struggle for the eye to find the line between each colour.
A pretty simple way to avoid colour discord is to use hues that have a fairly high degree of contrast, check out the graphic for an example of contrasting colours. The eye can easily pick up on the line between each colour, and there is little to no ‘vibration’ or muddiness as there is in the discordant colours to the left.
Some designers, particularly advertisers, lean into the effects of colour discord, as they feel it creates an eye-catching design. So, while avoiding colour discord for your more aesthetically-pleasing designs is generally recommended, this is not to say that it is entirely impossible to bend the rules of colour discordition in your favour.“

Prez Trump
From the other side of the Atlantic, it’s just hard to see how populations of Americans feel so disappointed after the Obama administration that they felt the need to vote Trump. You may not like Clinton and think she is “crooked” but is she really more so - in the same 40 year time span- than Trump? He won’t even divulge his tax returns even though he can and thinks he was smart avoiding paying tax if he could use loopholes. That surely outweighs the email scandal of Clinton?
Read the transcripts from the debates, it’s surprising how incoherent Trump communicates. I’d be surprised if anything groundbreaking gets done in the next 4 years although I’d eat my hat if he can deliver on just 4 of his promises (1 a year shouldn’t be so hard).
Wish y'all the best. Perhaps a change is required to gain perspective for new change.
Good article below:
http://mobile.nytimes.com/2016/11/09/us/politics/hillary-clinton-donald-trump-president.html
The results amounted to a repudiation, not only of Mrs. Clinton, but of President Obama, whose legacy is suddenly imperiled. And it was a decisive demonstration of power by a largely overlooked coalition of mostly blue-collar white and working-class voters who felt that the promise of the United States had slipped their grasp amid decades of globalization and multiculturalism.
Apple is doomed...really? Let them get on with it!
There is a foray of articles left right and centre which depict the same doom message on Apple for as long as I have been a "convert" as a result to the halo effect I felt the weeks after buying my first iPod. Whilst there is elements of disruption as a result of change, few seem to understand that change is a force for innovation itself.
Apple was doomed when it decided to wall its OS only to its machines unlike Windows and PC. People forget that was a big deal back then and Apple have been taking it from punters ever since. I find very few articles out there criticising Google's Pixel phone which takes a different direction from licensing their Android software to 3rd party manufactures. Now the Pixel is marketing "an experience by Google" at a new direction. How is this any different to what Apple have been doing all along? Apple claim quite openly to sacrifice features in the name of experience. How is this innovative from Googles part?
The answer is that it isn't.
It's just a change. And if you want to make something new you have to stop making something old. This is a fundamental notion which every time you hit a wall of nostalgia or resistant to change you should remind yourself of that.
Sure, change is disruptive but every disruption must be considered for the benefit in the long run. Remember the 3.5" floppy disks anyone? As i sit here typing this, my trusted MBP which has been everywhere with me for the past 5 years has an unused ethernet port, a firewire port, a thunderbolt port and two USB ports. I'm sure you can imagine which ones i use the most? I welcome USB-C even if it mean in the short to medium term I will need adapters. Eventually USB-C (remember its a standard not controlled by Apple) will be ubiquitous as any other port ever has. If there is any criticism by Apple in this part is that there isn't enough USB-C ports (imagine a world where there will be six on a MBP instead of four).
Innovation comes in many forms and where the critics are saying that Apple are not innovating anymore because of this or that, you could probably list more credible innovative points than not. One podcast I listened to recently (and I paraphrase) went on about how the new MBP are nothing special and not innovative enough because the battery life isn't on par with the Mars Curiosity Rovers battery life. That's all they talked about. No mention that despite a volume reduction on the 15" & 13" MBP, battery life is still the same. How is there no innovation there, considering that they now have added that Touch Bar which all things considered, must consume some of that precious battery life. The keys, the track pad, the Touch ID, Touch Bar, brighter retina display (some of us are still on non-retina displays), the colours (think about it, how else makes rose gold laptops). These are all features to be marvelled at from an innovation standpoint.
My real and only criticism to Apple is this: cost can also be a force for innovation too. For all the incredible updates between MBP updates, had Apple been able to keep the cost down that would have been a wonderful experience to consumers. This is where Apple will have real issues. Times are hard, the UK £ is rubbish with Brexit (topic for another day), Donald Trump and a multitude of other problems we face, Apple increased up the price of MBP by 20% in some cases. This is not favourable to the likes of yours truly who was hoping for a new laptop but instead will settle for a little while longer with this one - but not because I will miss the function keys!
