Honestly, this got me wondering about some kind of Valjean/Javert bullshit where The Hero™ steals the Sacred Sword™ from the shrine, only to get arrested and sent to jail because he committed theft. And when he gets released years later he can't get a job because he's an ex- con, so he steals the sword *again* and tries the quest again, except now he's got this lunatic cop who's constantly on his tail and convinced the whole world that he's some kind of ontologically- morally- defective habitual criminal.
Bonus points if we can find a way to break the monomyth. It's a formula that draws attention to itself and therefore is inherently bad storytelling.
