Today I had a great friend of mine illustrate a sketch of me as a surprise! He incorporated one of my poems and a braille translation of “poet” into the lenses of my sunglasses. You can find more of his spectacular artwork at @dave.barrer.art on Instagram.

The ebb and flow of the eventide dragging back to shore what I needed to find And I was blind to the message written clearly in my sky; So I remade home in my husk that I had once left behind Change can be wondrous Change can be torturous The chains to my arduous over thinking creates the sense of a sinking feeling – That I am nothing more that a vacuous spore inept to evolving

But the little contrarian sitting on my shoulder Redirects me back to the eyes of the beholder to recognize: “To metamorphosize oneself shouldn’t be forced, And we should let the act of nature run its course” Reinforcing the idea that I am only human

I needed to communicate with my intuition I plugged my ears so that I could truly listen I filled my lungs – Swallowed my tongue – And shut my eyes to force out an introspective vision

I was an equestrian in a woodland expanse Riding a black Ardennes; watching the midnight foliage dance The twilight sky was feeding into my violet aura As my spurs grazed against the nightshade flora

Oddly contempt with the honest mess of heartless carrion below me In a state of stasis, the bodies attempt to fight off their natural atrophy Left without the decency of a barrow Left with frozen faces of agony Hugging a bloodied arrow

I then saw something falling through the smog It was Cupid fluttering through the late night fog Bow drawn back; aiming precisely in my direction Wielding an arrow laced with a lethal injection of my abandoned affection Upon his fire, it sent my world that was adrift in a briar of sorrows to ashes To make me never forget what it’s like to wear a pair of heart-shaped glasses

We’re feigning death Watching the slow rise and fall of our chest Observed by our Maker upon our every moment; every breath I ache to unravel our veins To uncover the circulation of pain To triangulate the pathways that pang to the brain And realize the mundane reality That goes against the grain of what we ought to be – Sever the ties to humanity And release what’s hidden beneath our anatomy; To fall in love with the beauty of rediscovering the power of the psyche 1.618

We’ll find the creativity within logic; The symmetry between divinity and what’s chaotic And the dissonance within something harmonic Feeding the patterns of the universe to the gaping maw of the random As that chasm works in tandem with I to create a world without calculated answers

I had been longing for an astral projection Where I could roam free without any corporeal interjections Unbound from my tethered connection between body and mind For tonight, I shall sunder the the glittering binds of limitation And ride the spectral lioness into the umbral depths of the ocean

We were leagues below the surface Avoiding the Sirens – Cajoling in the silence – But I still felt a sense protection and solace As we soon arrived at a port in a softly sleeping Paris Trotting along the cobblestone streets; guided by its glowing ochre mane Heading towards the Portal of The Last Judgement; Notre Dame

Envisioning the story in the carvings across the lower lintel Souls writhing on the weighing scales of Heaven and Hell I imagined myself as an Archangel sculpted into the tympanum And into the archivolts caroling hymns of the holy sun Carpe articulum; I phase into the South Rose Window Embossed into the stained glass where I met a weeping widow Seated atop a manger as an inflow of windrow brushed us close together I looked into her crying, glossed over eyes; bloodshot maroon Dripping onto my shoes; spiraling white like the nucleus of a monsoon

The shutter down my spine took me out of the farmstead I looked out past the unharvested plains I saw the same comatose villagers creeping through the grains The crowd approaching near with arms stretched outward The rattle of my cower shook me out of the glass I tiptoed up the spire to find my tether back home But my wet feet became heavy as they turned to porcelain stone My shoulders ached for my new wings have grown I hobbled to the roof and perched towards the marvelous cityscape My face molded grotesque and my jaw hardened agape 387 steps high among several other gargoyles who never learned to rest

Weaved and entwined with trippinate leaves Trussed up high with concentrated eyes; searching through the trees Branches tightly tied around my limbs Crawling in and out of my fragile skin Slowly dancing in between my ribs Creeping along my puckered lips

Looking for any semblance of life; longing to be alive And below was the distant glow of a set of runes – An incantation of liberation cast down by the crescent moon As I recited what I believed to be true, I angered the mind of the macrocosm Blossoming black holes in the firmament The celestial auger boring itself into my core Siphoning my soul in absolute permanence

I was lost in The Deadlights Setting the ether’s arboretum ablaze in the dead of night Like a moth caught in the flame of a dying star Tearing open unfathomable scars in time and space A million years into the past; recreating our future Puzzle pieces within my grasp misplaced within the matrix’s computer I’ll rearrange my way through the static of binary fray to catch you tomorrow morning of last year

His hands clasped onto the music box Containing a land so vast; encapsulated behind gold locks And as he was feeling out the raised ornament His thumbs discovered a braille argument Translated into an impassioned dispute between two fiery lovers; Ivory figures fighting over the window-side, moments before midnight – To ride the stream of a lucid dream carried by the breeze trailing in from outside

His potpourri scented reverie constructed upon entrenched memories Lead him to twist the dial once more under the clutch of misery – To rediscover the forgotten melody To piece the harmony back together To string along a few notes; just to remember

Spindling it for days on end His finger strength was dwindling away – But his will to listen forever was never built to bend And upon his slow release after thousands of revolutions The contraption collapsed open, revealing a cameo of you Etched into petrified wood, gently spun to the sound of Smetana - Moldau

Sitting entranced on a red velvet love seat Letting the composition to continuously repeat Just like the heat of his heart’s unrelenting desire Striking blood soaked matches until it had garnered into a crimson pyre Leaving nothing behind but a pile of ash on the cushion And I, a spectral wisp, coexist with the entity inside the miniature orchestrion

You lost the scent that lingered on his sweater And he lost the time spent thinking he could be better Stomachs sinking; minds spinning from incessant late night drinking Pain has a twisted connection to pleasure Like finding common ground between ice caps and a desert They’ve weathered the worst of storms Hearts bursting with thorns Barbed and hardened from ardent wars Grasping onto any saving grace above the stars From Ursa Minor, to Ursa Major; It was the inertia of a slow dance between Frenzy and Fervor – That had fragmented reality to bits and buried memories six feet under

I softly collapsed on the sage and sweet grass Where the sleeping sands slowly crawled upon me And the sweltering sun had cast all the grains to glass Encasing me in full, amber tinted transparency; perfectly preserved Allowing any adventurous eyes in this uncharted forest to quietly observe Lost beside the peonies Locked within secrecy Lust remnants covered me in the form of dust; never to lose its piquancy Follow the pathogen of my lingering decay and chisel my fragile casket away Then sink that dagger of rebirth into my breadbasket to recreate me anew

Gathering flecks of glinting gold Falling into every crease, and every fold I lay cold; stuck within the depths of your treasure trove My mandible locked agape Emitting a beam of white light; searching for escape After a thousand years, I muster the strength to stand on my feet Grazing my hands across iron ingots and sliver sheets Viciously sinking my teeth into my sweet disbelief

A century passes every minute Each hour is only a single pivot My complexion grows cupreous As the harpies prong me with bronze rivets I follow the grooves and divots As I saunter through pillars of copper pieces Holding onto the picture of you bound to every aspect of my weakness

After a millennium of scaling down a crystal abyss I listened to the ambient echoes coming from your distant lips Reverberating throughout the garnet walls; I lean for a kiss To only receive my spirit’s contorted reflection And upon my own eyes connection, it shattered the chasm to bits I had turned my self to stone I have never been the same ever since; I’ll be your contrapposto prince for as long as your sanguine eyes continue to exist Every time you blink, it relocates the spade further away from the rubble Forget that shovel and leave me forever dismissed

I’ve now sailed through the monsoon, I’ve now trudged through the frigid tempest, Now my heart is consumed by the drought of Oasis I gaze off the dune’s edge - Marveling at the moon and nestled web of stars And how the orange sand becomes unsettled when my mind drifts afar Each second I remember - Each moment of surrender - During those cold nights in December; I study the torrent of my tempered thoughts that tear apart the steppes in front of me

I hastily regain my composure Whether it be a mirage or sign to the closure; A grand piano levitates at my side My deprived hands magnetized to entertain it with pride

That familiar dulcet half-step E to D# Followed by a lonely thumb straight to B’s heart From D, to C; harmonizing in key We finish on A Magnum opus; Fur Elise

I’ll play the score until there is nothing more than black and white keys buried beneath the barrens

Wandering head on through deafening wind Pondering things - Slumbering sins - I felt the itch of frost gathering on my skin

And darkness ensued through this blistering blizzard Each shivering step I took triggered a snowslide Without a guide - Each emergency whistle I sounded; no replies My volley of ice and snow - Barraging down to the depths below

Although - I still traverse forward to summit this mountainous metaphor: “Resilient, I’m sure - Your heart’s brilliance has much left to endure” And just for that alone; I will continue onward, forever more
