How I prepare study plans
Preparing study plans is one of my favourite ways of planning my work.
They allow me to know the exact amount of work I have to do and the exact amount of time it will take meyou to get everything done.Ā
I suppose we all have a personal way of doing a study plan, so hereās an easy, step-by-step post about how I prepare a study plan !
1. Take 10 pages out of your study material
Whether your study material is a book or notes you took in class, choose 10 pages out of it.
Do not pick the easiest ones ! This would ruin the whole experience.
2. Start studying and time yourself
Start studying those 10 pages, and time yourself while doing it.
Study normally, like you would do on any particular day of studying : you can highlight passages, annotate your notes/textbook, draw a mind-map, make a short flashcard,⦠Anything work-related that you would normally do.
3. Check the time it took and donāt worry if it seems like a lot
At the end of the 10 pages, stop the timer and check the time it took you to go through your work. Write that result down.
Do not feel like rubbish if it took you a lot of time to get through 10 pages : you might have made flashcards or mind-maps, or wrote some things down⦠There are subjects that might be tricky to study (like anatomy or other horrible things that med students have to go through - they are the bravest after law students ;-) ). There are subjects youāll hate and those will take an awful lot of time⦠In short, some things will be hard and itās better to know exactly how much time they take than just roughly estimate it⦠and get it all wrong !
For instance, it takes me an hour to get through 10 pages of Family law. This is because I highlight my notes and my statute book, I add post-its to my statute book and I quiz myself with the little exercises that the teacher gave us in class. All this takes a lot of time.
4. Repeat steps 1 to 3
And do this for every subject you are studying during the semester.
5. Estimate the time it will take to study the entire material for each subject
After having gone through 10 pages for every subject, divide each of your study material by 10. It will give you the amount of time (in hours, days or even weeks) that you need to cover all the material for every subject.
For instance, I have 279 pages to study to master Family law. Since I need one hour to study 10 pages of it, Iāll need 27.9 hours to get through all of it. One again, write the result down for every subject.
6. Prepare your pens and write your chapters down !
This is when things get funnier !
Take back your study material and write the headings down. By headings, I mean the subdivisions of your material. Depending on the subject youāre studying, it could be āpartsā, āchaptersā, āsectionsā,⦠Whatever the name, write that down and do not forget to note how many pages are included in each headings.
7. You can make step 6 funnier but do not lose too much time !
When preparing your study plan, you can unleash your creativity and end up with really good-looking things.
A really cute study plan can motivate you to study.
You can also use bullet points and check them when youāve finished a heading. This is what I do and let me tell you something : itās extremely rewarding to check headings. You feel accopmlished, serious and hard-working !
HoweverĀ do not lose too much time working on your study plan. It is there to help you going through the real work you need to do, and should not distract you too much from all the stuff that needs to be done in order to be ready for finals.
8. Prepare a weekly planner
If you already have a weekly planner, use it.If you do not, prepare one. There are cute ones available here on Tumblr (check @emmastudies : her printables are awesome).
Use it to write down your classes, your commuting time, your meals, the time it takes to wash your hair⦠everything you have to do in a week. This is what I call āGroup 1ā.
Do not forget to plan some āmental-healthā time = activities that allow you to forget about college : sport, reading, meeting up with friends, shopping, family time,⦠This is what I call āGroup 2ā.
Group 1 activities are compulsory : you cannot cancel them and have to build your schedule around them.
Group 2 activities are not compulsory : you can move them around in your schedule.
9. With that weekly planner, draw a plan of action !Ā
Using your weekly planner, check how many free hours you have. By free hours I mean the periods of time when you have absolutely nothing to do : no classes, no commuting, no essay writing, no laundry to wash.
Compare this result with the time you need to get through the study material of your different subjects.Ā
Fill the blanks in your schedule with the headings of your different subjects. For instance, every Monday, I have a three-hour free period between two classes (Family law and European and Comparative Law of Torts, just so you know - weāre getting intimate, donāt you think ?). Iām staying at uni during those three hours and usually go to the library. So, if a chapter from my Corporate law class takes three hours of studying, I will write this down on my weekly planner and plan to study this chapter during that period.
Alternate the subjects ! It is no use studying one single subject for a whole week : youād end up studying things that were not covered in class (this is difficult). Plus, studying the same subject for a week is just boring.
10. If you end up not having enough time, cancel a āGroup 2ā activity
If you realize that you wonāt have the time to cover everything you need to cover during a week, move a Group 2 activity (from Monday to Friday night, for instance) or cancel it(apologize to your friends of family if they were involved and agree to meet them later).
This is an extreme solution, but you might need to resort to doing it if your week is really busy with Group 1 activities. Hereās my method for a perfect study plan. I hope it will be useful.
Good luck with your studies. Iām sure youāll all ace your exams !!
10 Things I Tell Myself When I Donāt Want To Study
1. You are very lucky and privileged to have access to almost unlimited knowledge and you should appreciate that.
2. Be one of those rare people who step over their insecurities and succeed.
3. You will know what to do as soon as you start. Ideas never appear from inactivity.
4. Make yourself proud.
5. Itās not supposed to be easy. Nothing good ever is.
6. One hour every day doesnāt feel much but its 365 hours a year. You canāt not succeed after so much work.
7. If you give up now, youāll have to return to this later anyway but from the very beginning.
8. Maybe you think you can never find something to use your skills and mindset for. But if you continue investing in what matters to you, it will find its way out there.
9. Every moment you thought your fears would suppress you has become the time you made it.Ā
10. Make yourself proud.

How I study for finals
The most important step, PLAN PLAN AND PLAN!
This includes both a bigger plan for how youāre gonna cover the syllabus and a smaller day to day plan, for example if I have one monthās worth of classes in a final, Iāll usually do 5-7 dayās worth in one day. And I start out by the things I know very least. What I find most useful is downloading a calendar and filling it in this is an example of my brutal internal medicine schedule
As you can see, I donāt go by the order of the class schedule, instead I divide topics depending on what I already know most about and plan accordingly, taking both order and workload into consideration (obviously the things in lilac above would take a fraction of time compared to the things in yellow for example) and when it comes to reviewing, I go through the yellow stuff first. A crucial thing I do is that I leave at least 2-3 days empty because we all know schedules donāt always go as planned. And obviously this isnāt my entire IM syllabus, I already finished cardiopulmonology and other branches so I didnāt include them.
As for the actual day plan, I find that studying for the entire day can be extremely tough for me and wears me out like crazy, I only do one study session in the morning, spend 3-5 hours hanging out with people or playing sims, whatever I want basically, do practice questions for 2 more hours (relevant to that study session of course) and chill out for the rest of the night.
Moral of the story, pulling an all day study session/cramming=early burn out. You donāt want that so literally plan every part of your day, this is a crucial time.
I always say this but itās so important, passive reading is NOT ENOUGH DO SOME PRACTICE TESTS/MCQs or whatever you can. Like I said, I do practice questions for things Iāve went over every single night during finals and that honestly imo is waaaay more important than just reading the stuff over and over. An important thing to mention here is to NOT GET DISCOURAGED when you get stuff wrong, thatās actually something you learned and you wonāt make that same mistake again so .. itās all good, youāre making progress.
Thatās the main part of how I actually study, below are some of my tips that I stick to by heart.
Use the same source you learned from during the year this is crucial for your memory, do not *spontaneously* decide to use a different textbook or source just before your finals, whatever you studied from HAS TO BE what you revise from.
All nighters wonāt do you any good Obviously your brain needs to sleep in order to consolidate information so just make sure you get enough sleep, some people study better at night and they get plenty of sleep during the day, not the ideal situation for your circadian rhythm or hormones but if it works for you, do it (itās finals, weāre all practically dead anyways) .. yeah just make sure you get some sleep in. And trust me when I say no matter how much you think you can cram and get in during those hours youāll be sleeping, sleep is so much more important than that, I know itās tempting but GO TO BED.
Now is not the ideal time to eat absolute garbage food because youāll feel like shit and (if youāre anything like me) wonāt get anything done ā¦so just eat the best way you can and Iām not gonna be one of those people who tell you to work out because I canāt bring myself to do it during finals, itās just too much for my lazy ass .. but I do stretch every now and then and my ābreaksā usually consist of me going on a walk or something. So just do little things that can make you feel good but donāt freak out if you canāt exercise or get 2 hours in at the gym, just keep a healthy balance. I have no idea if thereās any scientific background to this but I (think) honestly believe that almonds help with my memory?
Know that itās honestly okay to stop when youāve had enough and that everything eventually ends and that a bunch of numbers (your grade) DOES NOT DEFINE YOU. So what if you lose a few marks? So what if you donāt get this and this right? Even if you fail, what the fuck is wrong with that? Youāll learn from your mistakes and do better. The fact that youāre trying to better yourself and trying to learn new study techniques is enough, you should be proud of yourself regardless of the outcome.

There is no shame in not knowing, the shame lies in not finding out.
It is not enough to learn how to ride, you must also learn how to fall
You arenāt being rejected, you are being redirected
Rejection isnāt failure. Failure is giving up. Everyone gets rejected. Itās how handle it that determines where youāll end up.
You canāt be afraid of the rain, if you asked for growth.Ā
If you had gotten everything you had ever wanted, you wouldnāt be you.Ā
Those re-directions are just you meeting different parts of yourself.
Life is tough, but so are youĀ
Nothing matters if you have purpose; Your direction may change with the wind, but your purpose keeps you rooted.
Your plan should not be to merely be someplace, but to be someone, for if you are not to have anything, youāll always have yourself.
The power lies not in the plans, but the planning.

Net Neutrality has been Repealed.
As predicted, all three men voted to dismantle the protections. Please go to their twitters and call them gopher fuckers.
You may panic, but be smart. There are plenty of lawsuits waiting in the wings. Net Neutrality repeals have failed twice before when taken to court. However- do not bank on it, there is always a chance for this slimy shit to slither right through.
What you should do right now is call Congress and tell them what you think.
If we are quick enough we can force them into using the CRA- the Congressional Review Act. You can tell them you want that.Ā
We have 60 days to do this.
Hereās a link with some info.
Youāll see a script on your screen, or you can say something like this:
I support Title II net neutrality, and I urge you to use the Congressional Review Act to pass a āresolution of disapprovalā reversing the FCCās December vote to repeal the Open Internet Order.ā
You also need to call your Senators and Representatives, especially if they received money from any telecom companies (Verizon, Comcast, AT&T and so on). Give. Them. Hell.
You can also Text āBATTLEā to 384-387 to use a simple chat-bot to send a message to your lawmakers.
Text āRESISTā to 50409 for ResistBot.
