so these guys are the actual definition of a romantic friendship. I know u know we all know the inherent homoeroticism between a king and his knight. But this is like insanely supported by the text DESPITE the fact that jaron (hes the king of the dynamic) is married to someone (and roden is mentioned to have a crush on a girl. It took me a bit to comes to terms w it but. Bisexual king). FIRST OF ALL jaron spends an entire book following roden across a whole country. And you may be asking. Why. and the answer to that is they used to be friends, roden betrayed him, came back a couple months later and tried to assassinate him, said hey im part of this pirate gang now n u have 9 days to surrender or we’ll actually kill you and left. And now you may be asking: Ok so why the fuck would jaron FOLLOW him. And the answer to that is that he is insane and the most queercoded straight person ever. But jaron follows him, disguises himself, and becomes part of the pirate gang (important to note that roden is elsewhere at this point) then gets found out. The pirates are like damn we fucking hate this guy and are going to whip him (important to note that jaron is FOURTEEN/maybe 15 did i mention that) and roden shows up and stops them in what is probably the most homosexual manner ever. details on that to be discussed for propaganda later. Anyway he literally fights/kills the pirate king (therefore becoming the king himself) so he can have jaron himself and proceeds to lock jaron up and BREAK HIS LEG W A HAMMER so he cant escape. Where is all this going u ask. Does jaron hate him at this point? Does he go oh ok so maybe this guy actually hates me n i should move on? No. he still manages to escape and CLIMBS UP A CLIFF. WITH A BROKEN LEG. ALL TO TELL RODEN “YOU WILL COME HOME WITH ME. YOU WILL JOIN ME.” he proceeds to challenge roden n lose super badly but bc roden is gay as fuck he lets jaron win anyway. that all leads to the scene thats in this form: “Where will you be when I’m ready?” “By your side.” thats most of their book. Theyre not friends. Theyre not dating. They will be debated by historians for years. I love them
