I want to share some wisdom from my high school art teacher.

In my AP Art class, there was a girl who was just starting to experiment with mixed media. At this point she was still playing around, trying to decide what direction she wanted to go with her portfolio. So one critique day, she brought in an abstract canvas with some rhinestone highlights and painted and real peacock feathers. She loved sparkles and peacock feathers so she thought she’d try introducing them a *little*. And after everyone had given some input, the teacher gave her his advice, VERY roughly paraphrased here:

“So here’s the thing… I do not like this style. These are just elements that do not speak to me personally, but I see that you like them, and you’re doing interesting things with them.

“My biggest critique is, I only merely *dislike* this piece. I want you to make me HATE it. Go crazy with the things that you like. Don’t hold back trying to make it palatable to people like me. Because I am NEVER going to like it. And if the audience does not like it, it should drive them crazy seeing how much YOU love it.”

Her portfolio was chock full of neon colors and glitter and rhinestones and splashes of peacock feathers and it was a delight. Our teacher despised every piece lol, but she got great marks and I think even won some awards. And more importantly, she was happy and proud of the results. Because she didn’t limit herself by trying to appeal to people who were never going to enjoy what she enjoyed.

Takeaway here: be as cringe as you want. Don’t limit yourself based on other ppl’s tastes. They’re not you, and you are incredible 💕

Hey. Why isn’t the moon landing a national holiday in the US. Isn’t that fucked up? Does anyone else think that’s absurd?

It was a huge milestone of scientific and technological advancement. (Plus, at the time, politically significant). Humanity went to space! We set foot on a celestial body that was not earth for the first time in human history! That’s a big deal! I’ve never thought about it before but now that I have, it’s ridiculous to me that that’s not part of our everyday lives and the public consciousness anymore. Why don’t we have a public holiday and a family barbecue about it. Why have I never seen the original broadcast of the moon landing? It should be all over the news every year!

It’s July 20th. That’s the day of the moon landing. Next year is going to be the 54th anniversary. I’m ordering astronaut shaped cookie cutters on Etsy and I’m going to have a goddamn potluck. You’re all invited.

It depends on the parent and the child.

Not all parents are suited to teaching (though frankly not all public school teachers are suited to teaching either…)

Likewise some kids will do better homeschooling and some will do better in public school.

There is no one size fits all in education.

Homeschooling’s advantages (assuming a parent who takes it seriously and has the time) are more direct and personalized instruction. It allows the student to learn at their own rate instead of needing to speed up or slow down to match a class. For kids who are easily distracted it can be helpful in taking away the overstimulation from a classroom full of other kids.

As far as socialization goes that can be provided via sports, clubs, etc. There are also, depending on where you live, supplemental programs for homeschoolers.

Homeschool can be harmful of course if you have a parent that isn’t trying or has negative bias they’re pushing or is abusive. There are many ways it can be harmful.

BUT!

The same is true of public school! Social? Many kids are traumatized by bullying. Neglect? A lot of school struggle with funding resulting in terrible teacher to student ratios and some teachers just don’t care. Biases? If you made it through public school without having a biased teacher or one who was pushing one view or another you are very very lucky.

All systems have issues and not all systems work for everyone.

About probably 20 years ago at this point, I carved this little drop spindle by hand from bone and osage orange, because I wanted to see if I could learn to spin and I was but a poor college student, and I figured that the ancient peoples had to invent the technology in the first place, so I could probably figure it out. And I'm me, so I made it pretty. I thought the cats circling around the mouse on the top of the stick was a cute motif. It works. The hat is made from the first wool I spun. It's not evenly spun, but it is a little hat with a little tassel.
