genuinely part of the reason I like nanago so much is bc they feel so much more layered and interesting with the history/drama of their failed relationships (presupposing).

jjk is a depressing ass story and I feel like the mere existence of this pairing caps that, recalls what had to transpire before they could notice each other. their temperaments each somewhat parallel that of the other’s failed lover. they each represent a lifestyle the other scoffed at in their teens before maturing into adults and finding purpose in/appreciation for it. they’re all the other has left from their late youth (in terms of romantic prospects, if you, like me, headcanon both as predominantly having interest in men).

I seriously thought I would join the massive crowd of gojo/geto fans before watching the show but honestly. um. I think the writer did geto dirty, and the foundation of his bond with gojo was just not really all that compelling. satosugu is kinda just… pretty, nostalgic symbolism porn to me.

but also, crucially, depression fuel. I love the unconventional tragedy of nanago

I got obsessed with Nanami after watching jjk s1 on Netflix and couldn’t stop myself from rooting through ao3 before s2. I kept wondering when someone would finally refer to him as “Nanamin” because that nickname shows up in fanfiction CONSTANTLY. just finished e10 of s2 and oh boy did that scene make me grin. but then I watched it again in dubs, AND THEY DON’T USE IT? presumably bc of the subtle/difficult pronunciation, and the effect of a funny twist on a foreign name is probably hard to grasp. but I sat there for a second thinking “then why do so many writers use it? meanwhile constantly using his comedic dub phrase about how ‘jujutsu sorcerers suck,’ when the original English subs say ‘jujutsu sorcerers are idiots/idiotic.’”

that is how it hit me — everyone and their mother watched s1 on Netflix, and because a SINGLE contract went unsigned (for a few years), there was a mass exodus to alternative sites for s2. Netflix slaps the English dub captions onto their subs file and calls it a day, which is the only experience you get by staying on their site. people got to read the og English sub captions on other sites, and guarantee there are way more fic writers who use “Nanamin” for that reason. I love thinking about how that has affected fandom culture.

since I’m not keen on rifling thru the pages, and I’m hesitant to expect that any other character will use this nickname in the anime beyond the scene with yuji because of sad events I’ve been spoiled on… does anyone know if it gets used in the manga, how many times and by which characters? is it originally yuji’s invention, is he the first and only one to use it? did we just run crazy with it in fanfiction from that point, after it got adapted?
