Important note about the purity of MDMA:

There’s an annoying myth going around at the moment that the maximum purity of MDMA is 84%.

This myth originates from the difference between the salt-form and the freebase-form.

The molar mass of MDMA is 193. The molar mass of MDMA-HCl is 229. 100X(193/229) = 84%

The reason why it is not accurate is because if you apply that metric, you would have to apply it to every drug.

Molar mass of cocaine is 303

Molar mass of HCl is 36

Therefore cocaines “maximum purity” would be 89% unless it was in freebase form.

Molar mass of Morphine is 285

Molar mass of HCl is 36

Therefore morphine’s “maximum purity” would be 88% unless it was in freebase form.

The reason why it is not an accurate way to define purity is because nobody really takes MDMA or Morphine in freebase form. The freebase form is a highly-volatile, oily-liquid that is not easy to store or consume. Therefore, the HCl counter-ion is not an “impurity” but rather a necessary component of the salt-compound.

Impurities refers to un-wanted byproducts of improper/unfinished synthesis or cuts added post-synthesis.
