Notorious B.I.G. was a hip hop legend that was born on May 21, 1972 and killed on March 9, 1997. He was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. He was an American rapper and some of the songs that he is knew for are “Juicy”, “Mo Money Mo Problems”, and “Hypnotize”. He changed the rap game with the beef between Tupac Shakur east coast versus west coast. In B.I.G early life he was selling drugs and not taking school serious because he enjoyed hustling. Then, he started rapping then got picked up by record label. The car that B.I.G was shot four times in a drive-by shooting in Los California. The car that he was shot and killed is now up for auction for 1.5 million dollars. Many people are upset and feel like the car should not be put up on auction.

He had a difficult childhood but he still made something out of himself.

He is known for pop rap he was a part of Def Jam Recording he sold over 500,000 copies in the first five months on November 18, 1985. He was a successful person and brought a lot of money to the record and his pockets. He is now retired music and moved on to films some movies LL Cool J has been in is Deep Blue Sea (1999), Last Holiday (2006), and Any Given Sunday (1999) he was in many more movies though out the time. He also hosted the Grammys in 2013 and Lip Sync Battle on Spike. He is  still moving up and doing big things with his career.

My thoughts on gender and identity in this generation is different people are treated differently because of the color of their skin or the way they look. For example, LGBTQ, black (colored) people, immigrant, Muslims etc. These people are thought to be different in society because they don’t fit society’s norms. I feel as everyone is the same we just have different religions, cultures, and different skin pigmentation. Racism is taught by the community the person lives in and how your parents raised the individual. Gender inequality still exist men still get paid more than women. Meanwhile, women are doing the same things that man are doing but more. For example, women can have babies and take care of the child meanwhile, men can’t have babies. Also, 83.0 percent of women are single mothers and 17.0 percent are single fathers. Taking care of a whole family by yourself isn’t easy. Babies cost 12,500 per year and a women income within a year is 39,621 compared to a man who makes 50,383. Women earned on average of 0.79 to every 1 earned by a men doing the same job. It isn’t fair that men are celebrated for the same thing that a women can do or better. Women has more patients than a men (multitaskers). They can also take care of a household and their man and still not be stress but some man can’t.

Being different in a society can have it downfalls but, it can also be celebrated if there more people like the person or the community isn’t judgmental or doesn’t criticize the person for being different. Living in a world where everyone is similar is boring where everyone is unique in their own way is where you get to find different hidden talents.

Gender roles seem to be so important to today adults and adolescent but, the teenagers are more care feel about topics like LGBTQ and transgender. Older people seem to really care about this topic because they aren’t use to how the adolescent act with all of the new changes that was made in society also them growing up differently. There was only men and women now there are men, women, men that use to be women, women that use to be men and else. If people were doing it they would have never told others and kept it a secret meanwhile, the adolescent grow up with this and just think it okay for it to be different types of people/gender.

The project that was intrigued by was Kia and her project was on how water is a natural resource. She started off with how everyone needs clean water and there should not be a problem with getting clean water. She also tells us her classmates how there are tester to make sure the water that we are drinking is safe and isn’t acidic. She also speaking about Flint Michigan water crisis. Due to that Flint water crisis many families that were affected and most of the children were born with birth defects. There were many lawsuits that the government had to face because they knew that the water was dangerous and how harmful it will be for the people of Flint, Michigan. Michigan was in 25 million dollars in debt and couldn’t do anything about the water because they didn’t have any money to fix the problem. My mind was made that everyone deserves water but, she opened my eyes about the Flint water crisis. I knew about it but, I just didn’t really care because I felt it didn’t affect me. It does because I have friends that moved to Michigan years ago and was affected by how dirty the water was. She told my friends and I what was coming out of her shower water. Kia poster was creative and different she put it around her waist then she explained her poster and why it was important to her and how it affected everyone around the world.

There are many people in 3rd world countries that are looking for clean water. There is only 2.5 percent of it is fresh meanwhile the rest is saline and ocean based.

When people from 3rd world or developed countries know what’s going on with their water the people will complain to their government who would try to fix the problem “as best as they can” but, sometimes that not always the case so, government leader do not take it what the people complain about serious at time but make it sense that why. Clean water is a natural right and everyone deserves to have clean water even if it hard to get to.

Superball Sunday

Since today is #superballsunday and I can’t be home to watch with my father and uncles the floor I live on is having a party so, I can still enjoy the Sunday. There will be pizza, wings, and drinks. I’m not a big football fan but my roommate is and she teaches me the game while I watch so I can understand what’s going on. The energy for the super ball is exciting and I hope I enjoy myself with my friends.

This is my first blog post where I talk about my first time in buffalo state during the Super bowl game.

In this blog I speaking on superball Sunday. It was my first super bowl in Buffalo State and away from my friends and family. Even though I wasn’t with my friends and family celebrating it the way I always do I still enjoyed myself. For example, the Resident Assistant on my floor brought pizza, wings and drinks. I’m not a huge football fan like my roommate but, every time I asked her about what’s going on she will tell me. I also, only watch the superbowl for the halftime show and Lady Gaga was putting on a show. Her show was entertaining to watch with all her backflips and jumping off the roof. The energy in the room was fun to be around because the Atlanta Falcons was beating the New England Patriots then out of nowhere the Patriots took the lead and beat the other team. My friends that were Atlanta Falcons fan were very disappointed because they couldn’t believe what happened and why Falcons let them take the lead and beat them. Meanwhile the Patriots fan were happy and was also surprised but know that Tom Brady was the g.o.a.t (greatest of all time). He did

When the game was over many celebrated the won meanwhile, others didn’t want to speak about how weak the Falcon look that the L (lose). The energy at the end of game was funny because the guys on my floor was really upset about what was happening to the other team and couldn’t believe their eyes. I was snapchatting everything because it was funny and I know the people that watched my snap was going to be entertained with how everyone was acting because of the game. Many people were saying that the Falcon was paid and they told them to take that lose because they wanted the Patriots to make football history.

The night was fun to watch and I can say even though I wasn’t at home with my family I still enjoyed myself with the new friends I made. I got to speak to my parents and other family members that night and they made me feel like I was home with them which made me feel happy.

Stop trying to make other people happy. You come first. Other people are not going to live their lives and make everyone one of their decisions based on how you will feel about it. That is why you have to do what makes you happy and what benefits you at the end of the day. Nothing else in this world should matter besides your happiness. As long as you are happy with yourself and with what you have nothing else will matter. Set goals in your life based on things that you wanna do. Stop caring about what others think of you. You do not need to buy jewelry and fancy clothes and unnecessary things just to impress other people. If you think about it, when you are older designer clothes and fancy jewelry will not matter, so it should not matter now. I feel like social media is only promoting this whole era where are just doing things to impress each other. I believe everyone wants to just buy designer clothes and fancy jewelry just to take pictures to post on social media and put on a show for the rest of the world. Everyone is trying to put on a front and pretend as if they do not go through problems in their lives. And social media is promoting this behavior .Social media users only want other people to see only a certain part of their lives, and I am not saying that is a bad thing. People on social media should not know everything that is going on in your life but, do not use it as a way to make people envious. That’s why internal happiness is so important. If you are happy with yourself and you do not seek validation from anyone else you’ll be successful in life. And even if you do buy fancy clothes and jewelry make sure you do it because it will make you happy. Not because of how you other people will see you.

Some of the things that were said I disagree with because not everyone buys things to show it off, what if they wanted to buy that jewelry because they wanted to look cute and looking cute makes them feel good about themselves. Also, social media is a part of our life and even know some people over share their business that’s what they like to do. Just because you like material things does not mean you like to show off. There many people like that but not all people.

I grew up with broken mirrors

They fractured my reflection and damaged my reality

This topic is important teaching young girl self-love. When growing up you’re not taught about life and how difficult it is and that there is not any short cuts in life even when you try to understand life. There are many obstacles that we as humans go through which makes us the people we are. Some people can take it meanwhile, other people cannot. Buying materials things aren’t going to make individual happy things that you cannot hold will like love, joy from being with another person that makes you happy. Life is hard but you need know what you want and what makes you happy to have a happy and enjoyable life.

A topic we should speak on in class is being adults and what makes a person an adult. For example what must have to happen for a person to know that there are an adult. Also, why aren’t we taught how to be an adult in high school or in college we just have to learn on our own as well as being a parent. This is where I came from I’m not letting what happened in the past hold me back from reaching my optimum potential. I will be successful and happy I’m gonna thrive and be all that God has called me to be. So after I officially graduate from high school, I want to finish college and double major in Art and Fashion and I want to minor in Business and Music. I always loved drawing as a kid it was my get away from everything, friends and family. Just drawing and listening to music in my ears was all I needed. I developed the Passion for Fashion later on in the years watching my cousin model on TV. She really inspired the way I dress and that made me confident in what I wore. Fashion is also a form of art, that was another reason why I fell in love with it. I hate people telling me what to do That’s why I want to major in Business. So I can be the boss in charge. But that’s apart of life listening to what people have to say no matter if you liked it or not. All you can do is turn the negatives into positives some how and that’s what makes you grow and overcome obstacles. Being bullied can tear you down, break you , you choose whether or not you let it end you. Its your choice whether you want to get back up again. You never know how life works ; It has surprises, twist, mystery, and is filled with the unexpected. So the best thing you can do is live. Stop worrying so much about what people think of you. Who are they to judge you. If your gonna worry, worry about the snow and whether you car is going to be covered in it. Life is to short to be fearful and tomorrow isn’t promised to any one of us. So this is how I see the world. Going through all of this has made it easier to see everything much clearer now. The world is filled with passion and extraordinary events that aren’t caused by accidents, but that’s life, living wild, creative and fearless. Its all up to YOU.

Frederick Douglass was born into slavery in Talbot County, Maryland. There is no accurate knowledge of when he was born or his age or any record containing either. He was mixed race with Native American, African, and European. He was born with the name Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey but After escaping to the North years later, he took the surname Douglass. He lost his mom at a young age and began learning the alphabet shortly after. He started to self-teach himself how to read and write. He began to learn a lot and began teaching other slaves what he was learning. He was educating slaves but the slave owners had noticed and put an end to it to disperse the congregation permanently.

Fredrick Douglas has made a huge impact as a civil rights activist. He escaped from slavery in Maryland and began writing antislavery writings which got him to be known. Some people couldn’t believe he was once a slave because he was such a great public speaker and skilled writer. He argued that slaved lacked the intellectual capacity to function as independent American citizens. Douglas wrote several autobiographies but his best seller “Narrative of the life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave” described his personal experiences as a slave in 1845. Frederick didn’t only want to abolish slavery and help African Americans but he also actively supported woman’s suffrage.  

Douglas is one underrated person in my option. He wanted nothing but the best for everyone. Equality for everyone, black, recent immigrant, female, or Native American. He also believed in making alliances across racial and ideological divides, and in the liberal values of the American constitution. Frederick said “I will unite with anyone to do right and with nobody to do wrong”. Some argue that Douglass is the most influential African American of the 19th century. He spoke on behalf of women rights, peace, land reform, free public education, and the abolishment of capital punishment etc. But he mostly focused on ending slavery and gaining equal rights for African Americans. Douglass understood that the struggle for emancipation and equality demanded forceful, persistent, and unyielding agitation. And he recognized that African Americans must play a conspicuous role in that struggle. Less than a month before his death, when a young black man solicited his advice to an African American just starting out in the world, Douglass replied without hesitation: “Agitate! Agitate! Agitate!

This blog has a lot of information about Frederick Douglass. Many people do not know about Douglass they only know that he was a civil right activist and that he was a slave. Douglass has a school named after him in the South Bronx and has an avenue in Harlem named after him named Frederick Douglass Blvd aka 8th Ave. He is a huge part of black history and black culture fighting for equality and demanding that African American have the same respect has white man. Many things has change but more change need to happen.

    When I was a 7, I was afraid to swim. I was visiting  my cousins in Florida and there it was… pool day. Panic rushed my mind and body, my senses became heightened and my mind blurry. Swoosh, water completely engulfed my body. I looked up and saw my family forming a circle, their legs synchronizing, their hands holding. They were forming a plan B, in case i didn’t fight enough, encase i failed to do it on my own….wait! I got it! This is a test! I knew I had to move, so I began to quickly decode the puzzle. 

   Up…Up….GO UP! My heart began to take a steady pace. Breath….breath… open your mouth and suck in air! My muscles began to kick in and synchronize. Stay up… stay up…Kick your legs and focus! My face piercing threw the water and feeling the heat of the sun. I stayed up, and began to move my body threw the water towards my dad. I did it, i passed! There were those eyes, fixed on mine the whole time saying “ you should never doubt the power you have within you.” I should probably explain, my father, and generations before him, were circus performers. I have 7 brothers and we all performed along my father, and all of his family. I became part of the act at age 4 and have never turned back since then. By the age of 7 I could fly threw the sky, scale a house, and much more. All because my family believed in the power of a human being and the potential we have within ourselves.

   Dad explained it to us as us all having God particle within us. How we can give life or take life, how we can help or destroy, how we must choose between good or evil. My father was not going to let me drown, and i don’t recommend anyone trying this. After my mother beat the shit out of him and my brothers, I sat at the pool and realized I might not cure cancer, or save the world when I grow up, but…. I have been put on this Earth for a reason. what is it? Who am i supposed to be? where am i taking myself or those who need me? Most importantly….

I enjoyed reading your blog because I can relate even though our parents do not have the same occupation. My parents still showed me tough love because they knew that I had it within me to do anything but, I have to put my mind to it. I have many stories like for example my dad teaching me how to ride a bike, how to do my homework on my own and time management. At first it was hard and I thought they hated me but, they wanted to see me be great and independent.

Sara Baartman

               Sara ‘Saartjie’ Baartman was born in 1789. She was born into the cattle-herding Gonaquasub group of the Khoikhoi. She grew up on a colonial farm where her family were most likely servants. Her mother had died when she was 2 and her father who was a cattle driver died when she reached her adolescence stage. She later married a Khoikhoi man who was a drummer. They perceived a child who died shortly after birth. The colonial expansion happened and the Dutch started to grow in size causing conflict with the Khoikhoi people. They introduced the labour system resulting in people being drafted into it.

                When Sara turned 16 her fiancé was killed by Dutch colonist. Shortly after she was sold into slavery by a trader named Pieter Willem Cezar. She was taken to Cape Town and became a domestic servant to his brother. During this time she was then given the name ‘Saartjie’ which means Sara in Dutch. On October 29, 1810 Sara supposedly signed a contract with an English ship Surgeon named William Dunlop who was acquainted with Cezar and his brother Hendrik. The contract said that she would act as a domestic servant and would be exhibited for entertainment purposes in England and Ireland. Sara was illiterate and came from a culture that did not keep written documents. The Cezar family was experiencing financial problems which made it vital for Sara to sign the contract.

               Sara’s features and color was very fascinating and made her an object to the colonial Europeans that had the mentality that they were racially superior. Sara went to London and became an oddity for display. She was displayed in a street that was full of various oddities like “the ne plus ultra of hideousness” and “the greatest deformity in the world”. English men and woman paid money to see her half naked body displayed in a cage. She became a popular attraction for people around Europe. After 4 years in London she was transported from England to France. She was sold to Reaux a man who showcased animals. He showcased her with baby rhinoceros.

               Her “trainer “ treated her like a animal and gave her commands as if she was a circus pet. George Cuvier, a naturalist was attracted to her body. He asked Reaux if he would allow Sara to be studied as a science specimen. March 1815 Sara was studied by French anatomists, zoologists and physiologists. Sara Baartman died in 1816 at the age of 26 and died of unknown causes. Her parts was displayed in a museum. Following the African National Congress in March 2002, Sara Baartman was brought back home to South Africa where she was buried.

Sarah Baatrman’s background isn’t talked about much but what she went though was and how her body is related back to celebrities like Nicki Minaj, Blac Chyna, Kim and Khole Kardashian because how huge their butts are and how their known because they have large booties. I like many other people did not know that she had a husband and a child who later passed. It’s sad how Sarah was used as a lab rat because she was different and her owners did not understand why she was the way she was. Even though she was a freak show to her owners she still plays an significance role to pop culture today.
