It’s finished! Final chapter, fairly fluffy:

“Fan-fucking-tastic. Let’s not do that again.” He savagely sweeps his hair back out of his face like it’s personally offended him.

Truth be told he’s reassured by the ire rather than Simon meekly doing as he’s told, a sign of comfort. Grace thus beams at him. “Consider me indulged. Come on.” He helps lift him back out of the water and upright again. There is something about him emerging, slick-haired and moisture-jewelled, the pearlescent eye and the shimmer of glassy fangs – inhuman in the best possible way, more beautiful than any human Grace has ever laid eyes on. He stills, abruptly awestruck.

Simon glances his way. Even in the rosy hues of sunset, his cheeks darken. He finds his words after a moment, “I can’t believe you’re legitimately attracted to fish.”

“Ex – excuse me,” Grace protests, the amazement spluttering out of him, but still in good humour. “This is a certified mermaid situation. Everyone is attracted to mermaids.”

“To what?”

Veiled Monarch

My inspiration came from some speculations about the appearance of grace-given. I drew on Corentine’s description in “Unstoppable Force”, the phrase “wrapped in black veils like night cavalry.” Really like that description!

Oh hell yes, that's what I'm talking about! Something that combines the vaguely faith/biblical themes of PHM and the just bananas violence of Iron Lung... NGE could be it! (I am also way biased because I love NGE, but) I'm very pleased that someone shares my vision!!

Hyperfixating like mad here, but one of my fav bloodmary works on tumblr is @tomorobo-illust 's exquisitely-drawn Pacific Rim AU. In that they mentioned they were also inspired by Neon Genesis: Evangelion, and NGE was THE formative experience for me so once I started thinking about that, I couldn’t stop. So, here’s the contents of my brain.

Grace 100% does not want to pilot the HM-01 but is strongarmed into it by Stratt. He tries to quit his job every episode (thinking of it like an anime series heh) but something always stops him

He is kept sane by his lovely teammates Yao and Ilyukhina. Hopefully nothing bad will happen to them…

Rocky and Adrian are from a distant space colony on terraformed planet Erid, which has a totally different language, culture and social norms to Earth, hence he still has his distinctive speaking patterns. They help maintain the EVAs and get told off for being too emotionally invested in Grace

Stratt helped design the entire concept of Evangelions. She may have piloted HM-00, the very first EVA, but Something Bad happened and the unit was dismantled to make the next three

She and Ava have a fierce rivalry with this dynamic:

The Consolidation of Iron makes up the portion of humanity that is spread across stations and space habitats. Since Angels arrive from distant space, they’re used to being the first line of defence and feel they have dibs on Angel combat

Their Iron Lung Evangelions are more adaptable and cheaper to build/power than the Hail Mary variant. The main downside is they chew through their pilots physical and mental health (all EVAs do this, but Iron Lungs are much worse for it), which led to them using expendable prisoners as pilots

They therefore go through pilots very quickly, but Simon is a very good EVA pilot, so he gets sent out to fight Angels the most. No-one uses his name, he's just Convict/Pilot 13

He loses his arm in a fight whilst defending HM-01 (against Ava’s orders). Grace spends the rest of the series figuring out how the hell to liberate Simon from the COI without kicking off a faction war. Lots of Capulet-Montague type romance ensues.

EDEN is an enigmatic death cult that believes the Angels have come to cleanse the world. They venerate the First Tree, which might be an Angel derivative; Simon’s exposure to it is why he has such a high sync rate with his EVA

They were formally labelled terrorists after they sabotaged Filament station’s defence systems during an Angel attack. Funnily enough the Angel was not merciful, which led to station wipeout and some 6,200 deaths. Simon has been atoning ever since.

I'm going to be honest with you I'm this 👌 close to actually writing this damn thing but it IS a very niche idea, I have no idea if anyone would actually read it. Let me know!

Long fingers flex in and out against a too-warm palm. “Hand please,” Simon speaks as though on an exhale. Grace doesn’t dare to look up. He’s not even sure that he could, his head and shoulders bowed in servitude, his world shrunk down to the hand offered to his. A palm cradled between his own as he digs his thumbs into either side, back-forth. Plucks at each lax finger like he’s stress-testing the joints and lightly pinches each fingertip. He’s… real. Really here, real.

For reasons he cannot articulate, his gaze finally flicks over to the mirror, which at his angle offers him a different reflection, a better view of its keeper. Simon is turned inwards as instructed, but their eyes meet, blue to black; he was watching Grace, not his own arm. Now Grace is caught, speared and skewered, but he can’t look away. In his ears, a distant ocean roars.

just re-read gol hah dov for the third(?) time and left a bunch of comments bc it is just so FUCKING good. and since its been on my brain i had chry & miraak in mind when i was listening to sleep token the other day in the car and sugar feels very fitting for them, specifically from miraak's pov early on during his rapidly growing obsession and Weird Feelings(tm) for chry while he was in apocrypha. not that i think miraak wouls ever call chry sugar (i dont think that would even be a pet name in tes) but the vibes really are there! even a reference to their little apocrypha kabedon moment 🤭

That's really kind of you, thank you ❤️ I don't tend to respond to individual comments these days since it's an older fic and I'm not currently in the Skyrim fandom, but I really appreciate you (and others) who read and let me know you're reading!

Sugar definitely covers Miraak's obsessive love for Chry (although funnily I think Chry is just as, in fact possibly more, obsessive - just less obviously). Those early GHD chapters where Miraak has no chill or social boundaries are probably my favourites, although I think the writing is objectively better in the latter part of the fic.

Summary:

“Grace must not take off suit,” Rocky says sternly. “No part of suit, not even gloves. Not gloves. Grace, you listening?”

“Yeah,” Grace murmurs, not listening. A couple of Eridians are scuttling around him checking all of the seals on the hazmat suit at his wrists, his ankles. He’s barely aware of them. Too busy staring through the panel of clear xenonite that peers into the quarantine hospital. Staring at the prone, lone figure laid on the bed like a lamb across an altar.

“New Human has pathogens that will harm Grace,” Rocky reiterates loudly. “Big harm, will make Grace sick sick sick. Do not want Grace to get sick, statement! Only doing this at all because Grace insisted. Must take quarantine seriously!” As Grace mumbles serious yep, the Eridian drags two of his legs over his front carapace. “Give Rocky strength. Affix gloves please.”

(A bloodymary fix-it fic with extra emphasis on touch starvation, and boy is Grace ravenous.)

Not gonna lie, this took me at least 3 years since I started this when I was in my first year of college and I'm about to enter my 4th year now 💀.

I tried my best to design this like it was a one of a series of tapestries telling Miraak and Chrysanthes story (probably made by Miraaks cultists let's be real). I'm not 100% happy with it but you never will be with art. I'd love to go over this again one day and use a brush that makes it actually look like a tapestry but I was already flexing my artist muscles with this one, including drawing a dragon for the first time ever.

And yes this was intended to be a series of 'tapestry' pieces each depecting a pivotal moment in the story and I may still end up doing that but I'm so incredibly busy right now that I can't promise anything, but I love this story so much I wouldn't be suprisred if I did come back to it when I'm more free in the future.

AAAAHH amazing! This is so cool, I love the medieval tapestry layout of it, from Mora under the deep ocean to Miraak LAAS YAH NIR-ing among the clouds. Chrysanthe's gold hair really pops as well.

Hello! Don't know if you're still even playing Skyrim but...

New version of Lucien just dropped (v1.7) and...

He now says Chrysanthe's name! I may have requested it ages ago when Joseph was still doing name commissions, but we never got an update. Until now!

I don’t play Skyrim these days (I feel like I always come back to it eventually - that or Fallout 4 - but I'm still in my Elden Ring phase rn) so can’t hear it myself but if you or anyone has a recording I would absolutely love to hear it T_T

A warmup sketch turned into a much longer piece. I was playing with the idea of Melina realizing she was (sort of) corporeal in Farum Azula, from @99corentine's Summit. Here's hoping Tumblr doesn't evaporate the details. I forewent attempting her hand scars because ehhh they're barely noticeable in the game anyway.

I see so little art of Melina, she gets too little love (though to be fair, she is kind of sort of Fromsoft's attempt at a tutorial), so I was very pleasantly surprised by this! The shading on the coloured version is so soft and pretty (which works even better with her spirit like qualities), and I always love seeing the lineart version, your lines are so clean. You really nailed her expression too.

All in all, phenomenal as usual ❤️

I'm a designer and I love books so, with permission, I decided to try binding one of my favorite fanfics into a book for the first time!

I think of this as a 2nd edition, because while I adore mara's design, I did my own typeset and wanted to try adding a few new features and extras, such as:

about this project

after finishing GHD, I was thinking of binding it when I stumbled across @thetempleofmara’s original design, and I loved it so much - the font choices, the high fantasy style, the illustrations. the passion and sweat put into fanworks like GHD and mara's design has always been my inspiration.

as a designer, you never really make stuff for yourself that you personally like. I really wanted to design a book for my eyes, I wanted that challenge. I actually finished the typeset in a frenzy (~2 years ago), but this is my first time actually binding a book, so I worked on it off and on again until I actually got my shit together and actually finished it. I actually made 2 copies (4 books in total): a set to practice on, and the final product that you see here!

test-printing to check font sizes/spacing

after typesetting and testing, which took the bulk of the time spent on this, I printed mara's cover designs out onto paper and transferred it to the book cloth in gold foil using a foil quill. I wanted to do some custom spine designs, but at this point I was just so tired that I decided that, hey, done is better than perfect. and I really like how they turned out - I didn't expect them to be so heavy, though! xD

designer's log (warning: very long and rambly)

I did not do any editing of the original text such as spell-checking, save for deleting extra spaces and other small touches. to me, the small flaws are valuable, a visible mark of how the work was made.

I did my own typeset of the entire manuscript, removing dangling words at the beginning and end of paragraphs/pages. this makes the text much smoother to read.

all hyphens used for a pause in speech have been replaced with em-dashes (—). this is how it's done in traditional books, and my personal preference :P

in the table of contents, in keeping with the traditional, Eragon-esque high fantasy style of the book, the nsfw warnings appended to each chapter title have been changed to the fashionable and eminently stylish “dagger”.

the glossary now has a style guide. it's........... very long.

added a colophon, a traditional blurb at the back of the book that is basically about how it was made. including a colophon is a designerly sign that a lot of care and effort went into the book!

the body text is 11pt, which is on the larger side. but for a long text like GHD, I opted for a more comfortable and inviting reading experience.

changed the placement of many illustrations so they appear in the part of the story where they are mentioned.

there is exactly ONE full-spread image and I am excited for you to find it :DD

I truly cannot thank you enough for putting all this together so wonderfully. I love the glossary, and the textured covers, and the little dagger icons for spicy chapters ;) Temple's art looks so beautiful with your formatting! I'm reminded again how phenomenal my readers are, and how incredibly privileged I am to have people who would put such love and dedication towards my work.

Also I had a brief go at bookbinding myself and it nearly killed me, so I have no idea how you found the energy and patience to put this together T_T

Oof, sorry for the wait on this one. I will say, the chapter is very long and a lot happens:

His next question is more pointed: “Do you think Miquella loves Mohg?”

There’s a befuddling note of silence. Haydn worries that he’s overstepped and caused offence, when he sees Ansbach’s fingers drift again to the ruby brooch as though unconsciously. His voice is curiously distant, “Lord Mohg is impossible not to love.”

Which does not answer Haydn’s question, although it maybe answers one he hadn’t asked. He squints at the brooch, which looks like a gift from liege to beloved knight captain if ever he’s seen one. He really has to wonder about the other question that was never directly answered earlier. “Why aren’t you allowed near Miquella, Ansbach?”

hihi!!! i am a huge fan of ghd and am rereading it atm, and since i usually listen to music when i read it got me wondering: are there any songs you associate with chry and miraak? do you perhaps have a chrysanthe playlist even? >:3

Hello! You know I actually don't T_T When I associate songs with stories I'm never quite sure if I'm doing it because it really goes or if it's just because I like the song. This is also in part because I tend towards instrumental music, without lyrics, which is always going to be more subjective.

I will say when I was writing GHD I listened to this song a lot (Deganta - Bear, The Storyteller) and I also think this piano song (Legend - Holland Albright) suits Chrysanthe well. If it sounds a bit wistful, it fits Chry.

Alas that's about it, but I was given a bunch of really great music recommendations over the course of writing the story, too many to really dig up. Maybe anyone who does have music associations with Chrysanthe/Miraak and GHD can chime in?
