“it hurts, doesn’t it?”
after a grueling match, soren’s limping out of the arena on his ‘good leg’ when someone catches his eye in the stands. his head snaps up in the direction he thought he saw them in, heart thudding, stomach rolling. but they’re not there. he feels tears threaten to fall but he’s blinking them away as he makes his way back to the holding room where other fighter are awaiting their turns.
—— “it hurts, doesn’t it?”
soren’s knee-jerk reaction is to whirl around and glare. “what the fuck would you kn— oh, you’re talking about my leg, aren’t you?” soren stares at styx, lips pursed into a thin line of annoyance. he feels just a bit of guilt for snapping at the other, having thought he was referring to the teary-eyed look he’d given the stands. of course styx wouldn’t know about the shit with soren’s ex-spouse, so he wouldn’t bring it up.
he plops onto a bench and looks down at his legs. his bionic one is fine, a little dented but when is it not? his other leg, the flesh and bone one, has a long cut along the outside of it, blood oozing from the wound. “well, it does hurt, but after dying and coming back, i don’t think this really bothers me. feels more like a paper cut if i’m honest about it,” he smirks, leaning back to look at styx.
”don’t ever leave me.”
why me? why does this shit always gotta happen to me?
soren doesn’t swivel in his barstool to look at the woman, doesn’t bother. he knows exactly who it is and he’s really, really, tired of her bothering him. at first, he wondered how she knew he was a valkyrie, but he knows it’s quite possible she’d overheard him ranting about them during a drunken episode ( as that’s an often thing he does, no judging ). but he doesn’t know why she’s insistent on getting him to like them ( it doesn’t cross his mind that this is their ambassador ).
“look, lady,” soren starts after he’s swallowed down his shot of whiskey. “if i wanted someone begging and groveling for something, i’d pick me up a submissive to wait at home for me so they can kiss my feet the second i get home…” he taps his knuckle on the counter, loud enough to get the bartender’s attention, and then he shakes his empty glass. “now, scram — you’re drawing unwanted attention to me. don’t want none of these guys picking a fight with me tonight, i came here to unwind after the underdome…”
he turns his head to her finally and points to one side of his face completely bruised up to emphasize his words. then his attention it back to the barkeep, giving a grateful nod when the man sets the rest of the whiskey bottle down for him to drink as he pleases.
“i think i just puked on the inside.”
this sentence is nothing new to soren, not coming from kitts at least — boone, yes. but boone isn’t in today, only kitts. they have the whole place to themselves and soren’s hungry. but the thing with soren being hungry, and not wanting to bother kitts, is that he tends to take leftovers and mix in other things. this would all be okay if said ‘other things’ weren’t completely stomach turning to the average person.
today his mixture is leftover pasta with applesauce substituting more sauce, since they didn’t have any and, even if they did, it would still be applesauce instead. it doesn’t smell the greatest, really, tomato and apples don’t seem to mix in the scent department, but soren doesn’t care about smell. he wants food, he’s made it, and he’s going to eat it, with or without kitts’ approval.
“no one said for you to come in here, y’know,” soren says as he dumps the applesauce pasta into a large salad bowl. “you were working topside peacefully, why come in here and judge my cooking, huh?” despite his words, there’s a teasing smirk on his lips as he grabs a fork and sits down at their small table. “hey…” he hums, mouth full of noodles, “wanna bite?”
“i’m sorry let me make it up to you.”
soren groans so loudly in the empty apartment that he’s sure he feels the glass in his hand vibrate. “kiiiiitts!” he shouts, wondering where his best friend is when he needs her. “kitts! come collect your brother! give him something to do! please!?” no answer. and boone still sits right next to him on the couch, looking at him earnestly. “jesus fuck…”
he glances at boone only to grumble and scoot further away, pressing against the arm now. “hey, gimme some space, jesus.” he thinks he hears boone utter a ‘sorry’ or something equally apologetic before scooting back maybe one inch. this is too much, seriously. he needs to get this through the other’s skull somehow or else he’s going to lose his fucking mind — and, if everyone’s right in their opinion on his choices, he’s only got about half of one left.
“look, boone,” soren starts, leaning over to set his glass of water on the table, ignoring how boone tries to reach out and help. “we slept together, okay? i didn’t know you were kitts’ brother, and you didn’t know i’d grown up with kitts not long after you disappeared, yeah?” he looks at the other to be sure he’s paying attention ( though, he really never had to worry about it because boone is insistent on making things up to soren so he’s had the other’s full attention since the big reveal ).
“but i really don’t need you making it up to me. it… it happened and it’s not like it was horrible, but i’d really like to just move on now, alright? it’s okay, really, boone. you’re only annoying the fuck outta me by continuing to follow me around like a puppy. we got one yiska, we don’t need another.”
“it hurts, doesn’t it?”
“you’re damn fucking right it hurts, you asshole,” soren complains. he’s on his back staring up at the sky, squinting angrily at the sun until ares comes into view, blocking the light. in a way, he’s grateful for it, but then he’s squinting for another reason. ares is such a smug bastard, but soren still enjoys his company — as much as one can enjoy a proto that loves trying to murder them.
call him crazy, but there’s something thrilling about how ares could very easily kill him, but doesn’t. and that it’s never guaranteed he won’t go too far and murder him some day.
soren reaches up and grabs ares’ hand, not caring if the proto bothers to pull him up or not. he uses his weight to pull himself up anyway. “you’re lucky there wasn’t any metal sticking out of that old car you just threw me on… otherwise, i’d’ve been very pissed.” not that being pissed would do anything, but he’s laughing as he says it, considering himself lucky there’s not a piece of shrapnel sticking out of his back or his side.
“you’re lucky being a goddamn proto, can’t fucking feel pain… shithead,” soren grumbles as he pats himself down. “let’s get a drink. i need one now for sure and you’re paying.” he nudges ares as he walks past him, beckoning with a waving hand for the proto to follow him or get left behind.

being in the woman’s presence is annoying enough; why he subjected himself to coming out into the desert with her alone, he doesn’t know. he likes to think that, sometimes, he can be a nice guy, but there’s no being nice to valkyries. not with him wanting to keep his sanity anyway. still, there’s a sense of calm over him being on the golden sands of the desert, eyes gazing out at the endlessness of it all. not that he’ll admit it.
his peace is dash, quite quickly, as she replies to his bitter words. his lip twitches, almost snarling at her right away, but he doesn’t. not yet. his mismatched eyes land on her hand before trailing back to her face, back to her unseeing eyes. she can’t see the look of disgust passing his features as she starts her song. one of those spirited songs he’s come to hate — the woeful ones at night being his preferred music.
“i’m not returning anywhere,” he starts, voice dangerously calm. he steps towards her, slapping her hand. “if this is your idea of trying to get me to go back to you guys, back to this shit-stain desert and fucking shit people, you’re all more insane than i fucking thought.” his words are hissed at her, like a snake ready to strike, warning her to drop it before it goes too far. “i ain’t going nowhere with you or them anymore. you can find another fucking ride back to fyrestone cause you damn sure ain’t sharing the same fucking platform up. fuck you, and fuck them. fucking rot in the heat.”
with that said, he turns on his heels and stomps off, fists clenched at his sides.

“Name’s Styx, you’ve probably heard about me.”
on a good day, soren likes to cap his fights to three, depending on how many he wins. if there’s two wins, and one loss, he’ll take it and go about his day. this time there’s two losses and one win, so soren enters into the stadium for a fourth round. he shouldn’t, he knows this, but his pride drives him through signing up for that fourth fight. which turns out to be an easy one with a newbie; obviously this kid didn’t know what he was getting into. he’s almost at his own limit though — almost.
would he admit this? nope.
he exits the ring shaking his hand, knuckles bruised and sore from the four fights he’d done before. but there’s an even amount on wins and losses, so he’s about to sign up for another round — one final one to end the night on either good luck or bad luck. not that it matters at this point because he’s still heading straight for the oil rig after this for a few stiff drinks.
( and if kitts finds him hugging onto the ladder of his loft bed instead of actually in it in the morning, oh well — not his first time. )
before signing up, he takes a detour to a small booth and grabs a towel up, wiping sweat and dirt from his face and arms. he’s drying the sweat from his hairline when the guy approaches and one look tells him all he needs to know — styx. the man is well known, and soren’s been to his fights, watched how he owns the stadium. they’ve never spoken, though, and soren’s curiosity is piqued. so he takes the offered hand and gives a firm shake.
“yep, i’ve heard of you. been to some of your fights too,” soren replies with ease. he pushes the towel up through his hair, brushing his fringe off his forehead. he tosses the towel to the side and turns to full face the other, head tilted to the side curiously. “damn good fighter, i gotta say. what’s up?”

(...) “don’t forget if you walk out the door without paying you’ll get shot in the back,” he states somewhat belatedly, calmly crossing his arms in front of his chest as he waits for the tattooist to come back to him. “and when that happens, i won’t stitch you back up.”
why he continues coming to zach after all this time, soren doesn’t know really, but he sure does wonder every time he finds himself knocking on the doctor’s door. perhaps this time there was good reason — his leg, of course, and it’s because he did the dumbest thing ever ( and he’s done some dumb shit, make no mistake ) and helped out a proto again. that’s not the dumb thing though — it’s pissing off said proto’s owner that’s the issue. said owner that had a gun and very good aim, leaving soren with a bullet in the calf of his good leg.
asshole.
and fuck him for coming to zach and his medical babble and stuck up attitude. but the man’s good at his job, even if he’s an annoying shithead. there is respect though, as long as kitts isn’t in the mix ( and soren doesn’t ask about that shit ).
zach seems to take pleasure in soren’s pain as there was little anesthesia this time, not that soren isn’t used to pain. having a half mechanical lung, replacement eye, and bionic leg, coupled with his inane need to go to the underdome, soren’s used to pain ( and this isn’t counting the emotional and mental pain he deals with, which he doesn’t bother telling anyone ). so, of course, zach gets a big middle finger thrown at him as soren limps off of his operating table.
with his slight limp already, and now this one, soren feels like one of those old mechanical toys a parent gives their kid to keep them entertained so they can have a minute to sit down. it’s an odd feeling, but he doesn’t focus so much on it that he doesn’t hear zach when he speaks up to him. “yeah, yeah,” he throws over his shoulder before turning to zach, scowling at the name the doctor uses.
“guess you can finish looking at it… just sew it up quick, alright? gotta get back to the shop before some little asshole comes in and takes my shit…” he grumbles, wobbling back over to the desk and putting down a small wad of money before he’s making his way back towards the operating table.
by this time, there’s a small trail of blood drops that mark his journey to the door and the desk and back to the table, but zach’s got someone who’ll clean it up, so it’s not a worry of soren’s anyway. he’s more concerned with explaining to kitts why there’s blood on his boots and why yet another pair of pants is being sewn back together ( which he’ll be doing tonight after dinner probably ).

this is a drag
one of these days soren is going to fall apart. his bionic leg isn’t going to fit right, it’ll be bent or broken one, his right side will cave in and puncture his already fragile lung on that side, and his eye? well, his eye will just pop right out of the socket and someone’s going to step on it. that wouldn’t be good at all, as it was the most expensive replacement. soren’s still paying off the bills five years later; there’s no end in sight it seems.
does this stop him from going to the underdome? of course not — why would it? he’s got anger in his back pocket and he pulls it out when he’s good and ready to. it just so happens that he’s ‘good and ready to’ every second of every day ( most days anyway — some do catch him on a good day and he promises to get back to them. ) and the underdome gives him an outlet — maybe not the safest, but when has soren ever desired ‘safety’ ( perhaps one time as a child, shortly after his parents were killed but he’d be damned if he’d say that aloud. )
so this finds him limping back towards the shop, kitts’ shop, only to think better of it. she doesn’t like him entering into the underdome and she’ll give him grief on the wiring dangling from his mechanical leg ( boy would she freak to see how bad it looks on the inside ) so he makes a sharp turn and changes courses. to gael’s it is then — he can handle gael’s chastising right now. he normally just nods his head and waves a hand around while gael works, letting the ‘mother hen’ cluck on about the dangers of continually messing up his mechanics.
“gael!” soren calls out to the younger male, limping further in only to groan when he steps down and causes a small current to run up through the anchor and right into his skin. “goddammit!” he leans against the nearest work table and rolls his eyes upwards. he should really stop using his leg as a weapon in the underdome, most especially when there’s someone known to fight dirty there.

“you fuckin’ kidding me!?”
soren remembers calling that out at the beginning of the fight, but now he thinks it should be said to him now. this first timer is kicking his ass and soren’s scrambling across the dirt to get back up, but the tall male is heading right for him, eyes focused on soren’s exposed bionic leg, pants ripped open there. he grunts and pushes himself up, but rather than wait for the other to get closer, he launches himself forward and tries to bring the man down into the dirt with him.
needless to say, that doesn’t work and soren can’t really recall a time when it has, but he wanted to do it anyway because why the fuck not?
unfortunately it’s left him completely open to the other and before he knows it, soren’s been pinned down into the dirt and the host calls the fight — the newcomer’s won. soren shoves the man away from him as he gets up from the ground, brushing dirt off of his shirt and pants and out of his hair. he curses a long string of filthy words, most of them aimed at himself but then he turns to look at the other.
“so, titus, right?” and for a second it looks like soren’s going to punch him in the face, tattooed hands clenching at his side, but they relax after a moment. “good fight,” he relents, holding his hand out for titus, “and if you’re gonna gloat about it, i’m gonna need to be shit-faced.”

( ... ) “that’s not a new one is it ? or did you add another one —”
soren’s long since wondered if he should change his other eye to bionic too instead of squinting it to keep up with his non-human eye. it’s been five years and it seems his vision worsens in the one natural eye while the other synthetic eye stays the same as the day it was placed into the reconstructed socket and attached oh-so-carefully. he doesn’t know anatomy that well, but kitts does and he often asks her about it, if maybe it’d be a better idea, but he’s still paying back bills even five years later — so a new eye would have to wait. it’s not truly a necessity after all.
he flips the light on in the tattoo shop, the first time it’s been on today as it’s technically the one day he doesn’t open his doors to clients. the chair remains in the middle of the room, bolted in place just in the off-chance someone decides to flinch or wiggles too much; his own stool is rolled under the desk where his tattoo machine, that he carefully refurbished, sits. along the wall are sketches of his tattoos, very few colors among them because he doesn’t normally work with colors, so it’s all greys and blacks with maybe a burst of dark blue or red here and there.
his eyes glance over his work station, the different bottles of ink, the variety of needles — all things he’s worked hard to collect and keep up. he reaches out and picks out a needle, a thin one used for lines and intricate work, and sets it beside his tattoo machine. he moves to the small sink and washes his hands, scrubs them hard, under his nails even, and then he cuts the water off and dries his hands off on a small rag nearby. he’s working on his own skin and he knows the risks and how to clean up and keep it disinfected, so he’s not terribly worried — not as much as he would be if it were a client.
with dry hands, he grabs up the tattoo machine and gets it ready, hooking it up to the power and carefully putting the needle in place after unwrapping it from the sterile package. he steps down on the pedal and watches the needle move, adjusting it as necessary, and then he’s placing it down onto the table and grabbing out the ink he wants today. he wants to add color this time, so he gets down a bottle of dark blue ink, eyes straying to the pen mark on his arm, a chuckle leaving him. blue ink — kitts rarely uses colored pens, but she had today and he wants to match that small change.
soon enough, he’s sitting on his stool and leaning over his arm, tattoo machine in hand. he dips the needle in the ink and begins on his new tattoo, making kitts’ doodle a permanent part of his skin. for only a brief time, the buzzing of the machine is all that’s sounding out in the room, until soren hears the little ‘hi’ from their resident proto, leon. a small smile is on his lips, but he doesn’t look up from his work, too involved in finishing up this one line first. he knows leon will make himself comfortable and stare at the process he’s watched so many times now, and sure enough, that’s exactly what he does.
and, of course, the questions. at first, soren had been annoyed with the constant curiosities that proto held, quick firing them at soren to the point there was too many to answer in one go without prompting more questions. but that hadn’t lasted, of course, because the proto has such a gentle demeanor, a kind face, and soren just can’t be rude or even brusk with him. so he sits and answers the questions he can, lets the others linger until he can figure out what to say. today, it’s simple — leon’s curious about his constant work in progress tattoo adorning his left arm, shaped like honeycombs but filled with doodles of various things — some actual shapes with faces and others just abstract lines.
“nope, not a new one today — filling in some space on one of these other honeycombs,” soren replies, eyes still focused on ending that one line. he takes his foot off the pedal, the buzzing noise of the machine ceasing, before he looks at leon with a small smile. “kitts doodled on my arm again… so i’m making it permanent, as usual… this time she used blue ink, so i’m copying it. i think it’s one of the first colors in the honeycombs…” he looks down at the various number of them, trying to find any color among them. “yep, first color on the honeycomb… what do you think?” he holds his arm out to leon, glad he doesn’t have to tell leon not to touch the unfinished doodle, blood still spotting some areas of it. the little doodle itself isn’t much today, just a swirl of blue with random dots placed within the spaces of the swirl. all he has to do now is the inside of the swirl and the dots, then he’s done.
