indie Lucien Tavelle from Critical Role's second campaign as written by Hope
okay yeah I'm gonna have to make this post a lot sooner than I wanted to because I just got the terrible news two of my uni courses didn't actually count towards my final grade so I am stressed and only going to be more stressed trying to sqeeze 12 ETC in my fucking master thesis is gonna kill me. so BIG ANNOUNEMENT:
I am not going to be consistently around until late June. I am going to be busy trying to finish my master. You may get me on d.iscord but I won't guarantee anything there either.
"the only unchangeable thing about all inhabitants of lucien's body is that they all flirt with caleb" may i add a second one: beau drives them up the wall (the feeling is mutual)
brevyn …. (>\\\\\\<)
The resemblance is not as uncanny as it could have been. Physically, yes, it is Mollymauk's body; the same purple skin and curled horns and tattoos. Yet there is something different in the red eyes, in the way they look at the world, at them. It lacks familiarity; the warm recognition that has been absent from the start, gut-wrenching with an intensity Caleb had not expected it to have, despite knowing he missed his friend. For so long, there had been hope — a note left in an ornate coat, a plea for Mollymauk to return to them, returning from the grave a second time. But the person in front of him is someone else, regardless of how hard he tries to look for his friend in them.
Stubbornness, of course, had always been a trait of his. Unwilling to admit it though he may be, Lucien is not all wrong when she speaks of desperate attempts to bring back the one they had lost, still hoping for that glimmer of a frustrating, endearing person taken too soon from this world. He has not spent time with Cree, but he imagines her feelings were akin to this, seeing Mollymauk walk into a room and being met with someone so different from Lucien. How different they could be, the souls sharing that body, is a mystery to be unraveled — truthfully, it doesn't matter as much to him as what it says of possibility. Lucien came back. Molly can come back, too.
Naturally, he cannot help but cling to possibility. Lucien can dismiss it all they like; Caleb hasn't given up yet. If not through talk, then surely by other means — but talk seems fine for the evening, exhausted as they all are. "I am not all that interesting," he replies with casual disregard. Plainly avoidant, of course, but there is little he wishes to share about himself. He is much more interested in learning more. "You will have to decide which is it, Lucien, if you wish to speak of my friend or not. You do not strike me as stupid — you know why we're here. Why we came all this way to meet — you."
For more reasons than one, now, but it should not be hard to make them believe it all went back to Molly, that there was little other reason for it all. Blue eyes do not flinch from all-consuming red, and Caleb does not back away even as Lucien leans forward. "The previous occupant of your body wanted nothing to do with you either. He was much more charming in his willful denial of what remained of his past, though."
"How much is left of him is what I think the more interesting subject. Because there is something, ja? If it is ah, a fragment, as you call it — a fragment is part of a whole." So how much of Mollymauk remains in you?
The wizard's response drew a laugh from her, a hollow, bitter one. " Not interesting, hm? My friend, false modesty does not suit you at all. " As if she had any idea what suited a man she barely knew. But there was nothing like sheer CONFIDENCE to get her places and in the face of a group that knew far more about her than she knew about them it was all she had. And she would not simply let her ' friend ' here walk away from her like this. No, she demanded some information, desperately needed something to nail him and the others down with and if he was unwilling to offer her even a glimpse of truth maybe she ought to push HARDER. Unlike a certain pesky voice in her head she was not afraid to break her unlikely companions and with some luck that unwillingness to risk destroying that imposter that had walked around in her body — maybe they would not dare strike at her first.
" I may be able to guess the reason for your presence here but I know so little about you. Give me a reason why I should care about your predicament, or at least offer me some INSIGHT. Don't you think that is only fair? " They would certainly twist it into sounding fair. The last thing they were willing to do was accept defeat in this situation, against a damn wizard no less. Their arrogance never failed to anger Lucien. They had it all, and what did they do with all their power and money and ability? Turn around and mock those who had nothing. Widogast here was no different to Derogna. None of them DESERVED the power they had been given.
At the insistence of wasting more time regarding the fragment, the pretender, Lucien could not help but roll her eyes, tail darting around with a hint of ANNOYANCE. " Whatever he was, he is gone now. Dead, nonexistent, as it should be. He was nothing. I am me, and he was ... a mistake. That is all. " But that was not true, was it? They had talked about this Mollymauk and even Lucien's own people had shared a few knowing looks with each other here and there. But if Mollymauk was a reflection of herself, he would have a right to be here same as her. And that she could not allow. No, he ought to stay banished, murdered never to return. " This body is mine. I was here first, " she hissed. " And that is all there is to it. Do you not think I have a right to keep my own body to myself? You think me a monster for it, I know you do, but could you imagine if someone stole YOUR body and then had the audacity to demand it back after it was returned to you? You have no idea what you speak of, wizard. "

" And what is a child your age doing in a place like this, hm? " She knew a suspicious thief when she saw one and this little tiefling was certainly up to SOMETHING even if she could not imagine what. The town was dying, there was little of worth left here which indicated either she had missed or something or the kid was truly desperate. That desperation was awfully familiar to her, it had curled up in her stomach when she had gone hungry for days, had torn her hands apart when the cold threatened to make the current day her last — and she'd nought to share with this miserable child because the few coins in her pocket were needed to buy her and the others new supplies.
It's a dog eat dog world out here, kid. If anything, Lucien found herself worried over being robbed by the little one. No use in being kind or pretending like she did not know what children were capable of if they were DESPERATE enough. She had been there herself not too long ago. No, she would not be foolish enough to give the girl an opening to take what little she had. " Run along now, I'm sure your mum's waiting for you. " If she were lucky enough to still have a mother, or have one that would MISS her at all.

Who would have thought magic could benefit them so? Magic, that foul, unfair trick wizards kept up their sleeves to use against the unfortunate rest of the population that lacked the gifts they possessed. It was all a bunch of SHIT but sometimes one had to wade through shit to get somewhere much more comfortable. And the tower ... oh after so many nights stuck out in the cold and after being forced to watch this band of merry misfits laugh and giggle as they retreated into their little magical hideout while they were left behind, exposed to the harsh elements of Aeor ... it felt so good to be out of the snow for a bit. Even if he had been forced to BARGAIN with the wizard over their entry ticket. It was humiliating, really and he still wasn't quite sure why he hadn't simply decided to cut them down already, spare himself all the arguing and be done with it. It was becoming more and more clear they would not listen to him even if he tried to convert them to his cause.
But you're not gonna give up, are you? You don't know how ...
There was that pesky voice again — not that of the Somnovem but much more annoying, a voice that sounded so like his own but with an annoying, smug sneer at all times. Like some funhouse mirror version of himself. He had tried to ignore it, to banish it back to wherever it came from, only for it to try and guide his actions and entrench itself further in his mind. It was certainly the uninvited voice's work, so he argued, when he ended up approaching the WIZARD in his own tower to ... talk? What could they possibly have to talk about? He should return to his own group, figure out a plan to get rid of these smug assholes who had tried to lead them around in circles the past few days and end this game before it could delay Cognouza's return much longer. And yet here he was, sitting down with a man who he knew held nothing but hatred for him because he was not that ridiculous pretender. He was better, could the others not see that? Not some half hearted fragment but a person with power BEYOND their wildest dreams. He was in control of something much older than any of them. They would learn soon enough ... they had to.
" Well, Sir wizard, I imagine you will try your best to use this time to attempt to reveal your lost ' friend ' in me, hold on to that childish notion that this fragment that never should have existed in the first place is still in here somewhere — " he gestured towards his chest, his heart, scarred skin visible as his coat had been cast aside the moment he had stepped into the tower. " I really hate to break it to you but this is who I am, even if it may be disappointing to you. I was here FIRST. So do not waste your breath on arguing otherwise. Besides, " He leaned forward, gaze all but burning into the wizard's own eyes through bright red sclera. " I am much more interested in you. I am, after all, still at an advantage here. So please, tell me about yourself. You came all this way to meet me, I feel it is only fair we talk about it. "

➝ @keenminded said: "You’re playing with fire."
" That supposed to be funny because you're a fire throwing wizard or something? " Wizards. Always thought they were so high and mighty when they knew absolutely nothing of the real world. Caleb might have thought himself clever, offering them access to the refreshing warmth of the tower in return for a peak at the BOOK — if only he realised he had walked right into the Somnovem's trap. It was only a matter of time now until he and that bitchy monk began to hear their voices too, now. By the time they realised how far this went it would be too late. Until then, however, the Nonagon still had a role to play and so they had to keep pretending to play along, to give these wanna be adventurers the idea that they stood a chance to convince them to stop their work, or to defeat them. A foolish, empty notion of course, and yet crucial to stringing them along long enough that they would not be able to escape the Nonagon's web. Even if Lucien personally wanted to get rid of them already, be DONE with it.
" If you're trying to get at something else then please ... do enlighten me, sir wizard. " It was getting old very quickly now, having to deal with Caleb's attempt to threaten any of them when he barely knew WHAT it was he was dealing with. Yet there was nothing they could do until they reached the astral sea. The question was if the Nein would reach it with them or if they would end up strewn across Aeor in pieces before they could make it this far. Lucien knew which solution they prefered ... but for now they might still have use for these clowns, as unbelievable as it sounded. " If you think I am unaware of the power of the Somnovem and their influence on me than I must disappoint you with the truth that I know exactly what they are doing and what that means for me. " After all, they heard the Somnovem's voices in their head with frightening FREQUENCY. There was no running from them.
