The Goodness of the Godless
Is God necessary for goodness?
edited by author ( Andrew )
Is God really necessary for goodness?
Imagine a man who risks his life to save a drowning stranger. He doesn’t believe in an afterlife. He doesn’t think a creator is watching.
He knows that if he dies, that’s it. Isn’t his sacrifice more profound than that of one who believes death is just a doorway to a reward?
If we do something good only because someone is watching and promising a reward, it isn’t charity; it’s a performance.
If I give you my bread just to get ‘better’ bread from God, it’s a transaction. If I refrain from killing you simply because I fear eternal hellfire and want a eternal life in heaven, it’s not virtue, it’s greed.
1 ) “I won’t steal because I’ll go to Hell.”
2 )“I won’t steal because it hurts my neighbor.”
The second one reflects a higher level of cognitive and emotional development.
Giving a dollar to a beggar because you expect a thousand back is not a good deed at all. But if I have only one dollar left and I give it to you because you need it? That is love. That is empathy
People said “ that without God, you can't be a moral person, or " that without God, anything is permitted. So let's understand morality and Empathy
Who decides if something is good or bad
If something is good just because God says so, then morality is arbitrary (if God said murder was good, it would be)
If God says something is good because it is inherently good, then goodness exists independently of God, and we don’t need Him to define it.
Roots of Empathy
Neuroscience has identified mirror neurons in the brain that fire both when we act and when we observe someone else performing it. This biological hard-wiring allows us to literally feel the pain or joy of others, creating a physiological basis for empathy that exists regardless of belief.
Animals lack religious scriptures, etc, read about Frans de Waal’s research, even animals show empathy: ( Empathy in animals )
But..let's talk about Moral Internal Compass.
An internal moral compass is the ability to distinguish right from wrong through personal reason and empathy rather than external rules or divine threats. (hellfire, etc.)
How does it work??
1 ) The Ventromedial Prefrontal Cortex (vmPFC)
It processes risk, fear, and most importantly, empathy. It helps you “feel” the distress of someone else
If this part is damaged, a person’s IQ and logic remain perfect, but their moral compass breaks. They can explain what is “right,” but they no longer feel the emotional weight of it. They become “sociopathic” in their decision-making, often choosing cold, utilitarian outcomes without considering human suffering.
2) The Temporoparietal Junction (TPJ)
It allows you to step into someone else’s shoes and understand their intentions. It is crucial for judging whether an action was a mistake or a malicious act
If the TPJ is impaired, people struggle to judge the intentions of others. They might see no difference between someone who accidentally hits a pedestrian and someone who does it on purpose, focusing only on the outcome rather than the morality of the intent
You can lose your faith, your empathy, with a physical damage
Phineas Gage’s Personality Changes
The most famous case in neuroscience is Phineas Gage. After an iron rod went through his prefrontal cortex, his friends said he was “no longer Gage.” He went from being a polite, hardworking man to being “grossly profane” and showing little concern for others ( Read about Phineas Gage )
If morality were a soul given by God, it shouldn’t be able to be turned off by a physical brain injury. The fact that a physical change to the brain can delete a person’s kindness proves that morality is a biological function, not a divine one
"Treat others as you wish to be treated" appears in almost every culture and civilization—including those that had no contact with Abrahamic religions, suggesting it is a universal human realization based on empathy.
So let's come to our topic: people said, "Without God or religion, you can't be a moral person," or "Without God, everything is permitted."
Dharmik Jan Morcha said “that moving away from God is the root cause of societal 'evils' like corruption and lack of empathy.”
The root cause of moral decline in society is that human beings are moving away from their religion and from God. It is the duty of religious leaders to join hands to save the nation from moral and spiritual degeneration. — Prof. Salim Engineer
But the facts show something else entirely. If you look at the safest countries in the world, like Iceland or Japan or Sweden,
They are also the places where the most people are atheists.
These countries have the lowest crime and the lowest murder rates, even though they are not praying to any God.
But when you look at the most religious countries, like Nigeria or El Salvador or Mexico, you see the highest levels of violence and crime in the world.
This shows that religion does not actually make a society safer or more moral.
In secular countries, people are good to each other because they actually care, and they use their reason to build a better life for everyone
They do not need a reward or a punishment to do the right thing.
The data is clear that the more a country moves away from religion, the more peaceful and safe it actually becomes. It is the godless countries that are showing us what real morality looks like.
So answer my question:
If you found out tomorrow with 100% certainty that God does not exist, would you immediately lose your empathy and start committing crimes?
no matter how the election turns out, our path forward is the same. engage in your local community, not just through voting but through all kinds of grass-roots activism. learn about indigenous groups near you, their needs, how you can help them. support local black activist groups. form an affinity group. start a community fridge. get to know your neighbors, the ones who are sketchy and dirty and speak weird and are hard to get along with. the way out will always be through community. no supreme victory or crushing defeat; we must choose over and over again, forever, to live through the good and the bad together, as one.
I think it’s normal for people to be mad at each other sometimes even if they’re close friends or family or intimate with each other. Like I think that’s a normal and healthy part of relationships that can happen sometimes
“Why were you on Mad At Me island” because at the time I was mad at you and yet our friendship has weathered that without trouble
I went to Mad At You island because my feelings are my problem. I needed to stomp down the beach until I could sit and watch the sunrise. I built a sandcastle and did some thinking. Then I boarded the good ship You Matter To Me and sailed it all the way to meet you on the Let’s Talk Shore of I Love You Island.
hey guys can you develop more complex nuanced loving views of yourselves. thanks.
do you ever think about how if you dive into the ocean and go deeper and deeper you will pass through layers of darker and darker blue until everything is black and cold and the pressure will be so intense that it will kill you without protection but if you keep going you will find little glowing specks of light, and if you go up into the sky and go higher and higher you will pass through layers of darker and darker blue until everything is black and cold and the pressure will be so intense that it will kill you without protection but if you keep going you will find little glowing specks of light
