Project Mayhem [13.03.15]
There’s a club night called Project Mayhem that I sometimes go to. It’s always a good night out, but often I’ve wanted to actually be one of the photographers. On the 13th I got that opportunity. This was a first time experience for me and I learnt a lot that night.Â
Firstly, allow me to get the fanning out of the way, because being backstage at one of my favourite venues felt amazing. The staff and organisers were really nice and welcoming. (Free beer heck yeah!) And overall I went from being super nervous to comfortable and relaxed.Â
The first thing I learnt that night is taking photos in a night club is harder than is sounds and looks. Like really hard. Your perfect shots come and go in about a second if you’re lucky. The lights feel are great for atmospheric effect but pretty crappy for when taking photos.Â
Another thing I learnt is that you should carry spare batteries, and spare batteries for the spare ones. I bought a new flash gun for the even (Nikon SB-700) and the batteries didn’t last that long. Silly me left my spares in the camera bag. This meant I missed out a lot. As I had never used that flash gun before (or any flashgun for that matter) I spent a lot of time learning. Trial and error.Â
Overall I didn’t get many great photos but I am not at all upset. It honestly felt like one of the best nights in my life and I can’t wait to do it again. I went in there knowing i wouldn’t leave with a hundred amazing shots, but I would leave with a large sense of accomplishment and a massive smile on my face.
