The transwoman they had on the show was also an AIDS activist, and had AIDS herself… *and* in a time when there was MUCH greater social stigma around the disease. Lucy had her on, and kissed her on screen…during a time when people were still afraid of getting AIDS from kissing or from toilet seats.

They also had Alexis Arquette as a character on the show in a later season.

Also, they made exactly TWO jokes out of it– her name was “Miss Artiphys”, and when she’s crowned the winner, the emcee says “You are something else”, to which she responds in a deeper voice “You have no idea.”

Other than that, she’s…. a character in the episode. When she’s revealed to Xena, it’s like “Oh, I thought you were the villain, but if THAT’s all you’re hiding, never mind…”

Any other show pulling the same schtick at that time would have a man in the part, and it would have been a series of jokes, up to and including cracks on her appearance.
