I'm the Anon from earlier, when I told my Mom she was fine with it, she is the only family I have told, I can't tell my Dad cause, being a guy, who likes guys is a big no-no to him, and cause I live under his roof I'm afraid he'll kick me out. The only other person I've told is my best friend and she was okay with it. I think the thing that bothers me is that I feel I'm lying to them by saying I like both when in reality I like guys.

Oh Anon, I wish I had easy answers for you.

I would have a long heart to heart with your Mom on how to tell your father.  I wish I could predict how it will come out but I cannot.  How is your relationship with your father? Close? Distant? Typical of I’m Dad, you son obey me?

Maybe talk with your best friend first and come clean with her if it is really, really bothering you.  See how she reacts.  Talk to her about your fears. Communication is still key here.  Then perhaps tackle your Mom.  Let her know your fears about your father.  See what she says, how she reacts.  Sounds like I would like your mom.  She sees you as her son period.  Doesn’t matter.  I have no way of knowing your dads reaction but sometimes that can surprise the hell out of us.

Here’s the thing, a little story. Growing up, my family was the typical fairly racist family.  I always looked askew at them because at the same time I had teachers who were preaching equality.

When I got my son, I was terrified to tell my father that he would be asian descendant.  My dad though surprised the absolute hell out of me.  He loves my son like no other.  Carries pictures of him, shows him off to his yacht club buddies (and there is a huge bag of racists).  My dad would battle anyone who calls my son names.

My point is, our parents can pleasantly surprise us.

I hope your dad pleasantly surprises you too.  My hope is that the love he has for you overrides his homophobia.

Unfortunately this will have to be your call.

Talk to your friend.

Talk to your mom.
