Getting over a crush, this is what I realized:

Learning to be a girl when there are only spaces for boys and women in mainstream media is a challenge, but not one I am unwilling to face.

"Girl cinema" is criminally underrepresented in mainstream media. Most coming-of-age films revolve around young men and their journeys (a story that is important to our culture, however not so important that it should overshadow women), and most films about women neglect adolescence. To be a teenager is to be a boy, and to be female is to be an adult in this world. This binary language neglects an entire other issue, the lack of transgender representation in cinema. Overall, coming-of-age cinema needs to be expanded to encompass the vast variety of stories that occur between the ages of 12 and 20.

Chick-Lit, more than just romance-

Chick-lit has gotten a bad rep: minimal substance, high levels of romance, little to no quality. But what is chick-lit? I'd like to think of it as literature for and by women. Of course, this encompasses the stereotypical romance novel, but it's so much more. Writers like Sylvia Plath, Otessa Moshfegh, and Virginia Woolf all fall under my definition of chick-lit. Terms like this one have been used to degrade the interests and opinions of women since the beginning, but by reclaiming and redefining them we can strip them of their power. Here's some of my favorite chick-lit:
