thinking about the new Nakamura-kun, specifically the moment where we get the briefest insight into Hirose’s POV

right before this clip, Hirose shows Nakamura the game they’re talking about. He’s trying to include Nakamura, to not ice him out or make him feel excluded. He invited him to study and then to lunch! He clearly wants Nakamura here and enjoys his company. But Nakamura doesn’t know about the things they’re talking about and so can’t contribute.

We’re in Nakamura’s head for 99% of the anime. We know that in this scene, he’s writing down notes about what Hirose likes (music, shows, video games) so he can check them out later. But Hirose doesn’t know that, and they just came from studying at the library. So to Hirose, it seems like Nakamura doesn’t actually want to be there; that he’s just being polite and is trying to continue studying with his notebook. And that’s why Hirose looks so sad and guilty in a shot that we the audience are privy to, but Nakamura doesn’t notice.

And we see how Hirose deals with that guilt and sadness—by not giving up! By paying attention! He thinks Nakamura is sitting in polite discomfort, trying to sneak in some studying, and he tries to make Nakamura more comfortable. He asks him about what music he likes, he notices when his drink is empty and offers to get him more. He even gets sulky when his other friends usurp his gallant offer by asking him to get more for them, too, because that offer was to Nakamura, thank you!

Then, when Nakamura helps him get the drinks, Hirose takes that opportunity to apologize for his perceived offense of “making” Nakamura tag along.

And we get a nice subtle parallel here to when Hirose almost did the exact thing he’s worried Nakamura is doing now—politely tagging along when Takeuchi tells him to join so as not to rock the boat or be a “spoilsport,” as Takeuchi calls him. Forcing himself to go. And now Hirose is concerned that he acted like Takeuchi and pressured Nakamura.

This is such interesting insight into Hirose, and really helps further establish—outside of Nakamura’s biased POV—that he’s a genuinely kind and considerate person (even if he does have a bit of a mischievous streak with that prank he pulled on Takeuchi) and that he’s genuinely interested in putting in effort in being friends (and maybe more) with Nakamura.

I really hope we get more insights like this outside of Nakamura’s POV because Nakamura, our precious adorable unreliable narrator, is wrapped up in his own anxieties and stuck in his own head, and assumes Hirose is perceiving him through the same Doom Gloom Awkward Weirdo lens he sees himself and his actions through. But Hirose doesn’t know his thoughts, his plans, his hopes, and Hirose has his own internal world that Nakamura can’t see into, either.

And we the audience got a tiny glimpse into Hirose’s internal world this episode.

What's the deal with this universe? STORYTIME!!!

Long ago, the world was gray. People lived without anger, sorrow, or fear—but without joy, hope, or love as well. They knew no suffering, yet they never truly lived. "Please," she prayed to the heavens, "let us know why we are here." The heavens answered with their first blessing: color. As humanity learned to feel, each person's true nature revealed itself through their eyes. Those who sought knowledge became yellow. Those ruled by emotion became blue. Dreamers became green. Caregivers pink. The ambitious red. From then on, every child received their color upon turning seven—the path their heart was meant to follow. But the blessing carried a curse. Those who strayed too far from their true path lost their color and returned to the gray world of old. Fear spread across humanity once again. Generations later, the granddaughter of the first girl prayed to the heavens. "Please... give us hope. Show us the way." The heavens answered with a second blessing. Her eyes turned purple. Since then, people born with purple eyes have been destined to guide others, becoming living beacons for those who have lost their way. The world has changed through the centuries. But the blessings of the heavens remain.

so it's stated from the beginning that nakamura loved hirose. but it clearly was a journey, when his feelings changed through the show, and i love it so much.

so in the beginning nakamura liked his outside, his naive and cute look, it was the "love from the first sight" cliché. or you can think it is, but it's a lot more interesting and deep than that. nakamura barely knows hirose, so in the beginning we see him just drawing pictures in his imagination how would hirose act, and it was way too different from the real hirose. he was in love more with his own imagination, with just a picture, who looks really similar with the hero of this manga he've been reading. and through the show we see how much changes his vision of hirose since they get a chance to know eachother closer. from a jealous nakamura who's ready to fight with anyone who gets close to hirose, we're getting nakamura crying in the dark thinking ok I'm going to fight FOR HIROSE AND HANA AND THEIR RIGHT TO BE TOGETHER. stopping being such an egoist. i love it.

why did this happen? because he got to know hirose. the real hirose, that a little amount of people is able to see. maybe this amount of people equals zero. honest hirose, vulnerable hirose. true hirose.

so i think he went from liking hirose to loving him madly and deeply and without any egoism. and guess when that happened?

6th episode.

we see that his unrealistic fantasies fade with time. no more second hand embarrassment... and more and more real hirose in his mind.

he went from loving an image, the perfect hirose, to be in love with the real aiki hirose, who wants to be alone sometimes, is scared of dark places and loves romantic movies. when that happened? when they became friends. with time. and effort.

i want to scream at the top of my lungs. i can't take it anymore.
