“It’s never easy to desensitize yourself from spiritual and emotional pain, even when you’ve been hurt often. The few people I’ve seen that have managed it aren’t anything to emulate, believe me. We’re meant to feel. Not doing so kills something inside us that spills over to the people around us.”

Abel set a plate in front of Lirim. “That being said, and you’ll have to pardon my bluntness, maybe you’re not foaming at the mouth lighting torches and polishing pitchforks kinda mad because a part of you…was waiting for something like this to happen.”

"Good question," said Lirim with a sigh.

Abel gave Lirim’s shoulder a squeeze and hunted up plates for their pizza. “My Grammy told me something once when I was making rounds with her. She healed people sometimes, you see. She said that our being learns to recognize certain types of pain so that if we ever experience them again, their effect on us is lessened. She said that that’s why women who’ve had a baby before have easier labors for the children that follow, why cooks can just sigh at a burn or a cut instead of crying out in pain.”

"I... " He sighed. "Yeah, I guess. But I love him and I'm the one he left so shouldn't I be the one foaming at the mouth with anger?"

Abel nodded. “That’s the way it usually works out. So the question is, why aren’t you?”

The nephilim nodded. "Everyone seems to hate him now. I understand their point-of-view, I do, but... " He sighed. "I can't continue to hate him. I'll miss him, I'll hate what he did, but the man himself? No. He's my husband."

Abel nodded, falling silent for a moment or two while he thought. “Maybe they don’t. They were all friends with him, right? They cared about him?”

“Maybe they’re just angry and hurt.”

    “That works for me, sweet.” Gideon just smiled and nodded, though he had to make a little face at the kick. “Well, at least it wasn’t my bladder again,” he said with the tiniest chuckle, then snuggled up to the other, set up the movie and snacked on the rest of the food and flowers as it played, eventually just letting it play whatever the next movie was so he could curl up with Abel and fall asleep like usual. So much sleeping lately, but everything seemed to exhaust him. At least if he was asleep he could get out of bed as much as he pleased in his dreams.

Abel chuckled softly. “Thank god for that. If it was you’d have to get up and we’re far too comfortable.” He rubbed slow soothing circles on Gideon’s back as the movie played, focusing more on the lovely sensation of having his dear dormouse in his arms than on the action.

He continued to rub Gideon’s back even after he fell asleep, and in the spirit of not disturbing his rest, Abel switched from the second movie to a nature documentary. One of the good ones narrated by David Attenborough and his calming voice.
