When I'm on social media, my sympathy for Giorno Giovanna reaches its peak… poor kid. Both in the manga and in real life, they’re easily misunderstood.

I've said this before but valjean's view of the bishop throughout the book gets me so bad because like. he knew him for what, a day maybe? and it absolutely had a vast & profound & positive impact on him. but then he goes on to spend the whole book comparing himself to his idealized vision of the bishop & finding himself wanting & feeling guilty and miserable about every petty or selfish thought that crosses his mind. but it's so fucked up because like we as the readers know the bishop better! we've read the whole first book and we know he came from a privileged & wealthy background, that he was a rake when he was young, it wasn't til he was in his 40s or 50s to have some sort of change of heart & become a priest (a similar age to valjean when he met him!), that he has moments that seriously shake him, that he has some dubious politics left over, that he still has moments of pettiness he has to work through on the page (his initial approach to the member of the convention, e.g.). and also he's just kind of a weird old guy (affectionate). and like this is not to criticize the bishop, I think he's a genuinely really good guy, just that while the bishop has a realistic view of himself & his past ("he described himself with a smile, an ex-sinner,"), valjean is not getting any of this except maybe like. what would be mentioned in the newspaper when the bishop died. so his whole view of him is of this one shining moment where he changed his life and he feels he doesn't live up to that. which is sad! because the bishop understood him more than he realized & wouldn't have wanted him to feel that way
It's even sadder because like-he could have talked to Myriel more! He could have visited! He could have written! He could have learned more from the guy who changed his life, and more about him, and maybe come to realize that no one's flawless, and mistakes don't mean a person is Ruined Forever. And you know Myriel would have had nothing but kindness for him, and maybe even been able to teach him a little of that for himself.
But the last time we saw him anywhere near Myriel, he was on his knees, hiding outside, not going into the house, not daring to speak to him directly.
Gah. Valjean says " I do not know whether the person who gave (the candlesticks) to me is pleased with me yonder on high." But he could have just asked Myriel, on Earth-- except of course he couldn't , emotionally. But the chance was there, and not taken , and it is absolutely heartbreaking.
I love how Les Mis (the original novel) is so fundamentally hopeful about the power of rebellion and activism. So many adaptations/retellings of Les Mis imply its message is kinda shallow and defeatist— something about how rebellion never changes anything/always puts you back right where you began, so it’s wiser to never stand against the government. But that’s not the novel at all.
The original novel, which Hugo wrote as a barely-veiled call to action against the government of Napoleon III, is so convinced of the value of resistance against tyranny. The message is not that resistance is doomed to fail— it is that resistance to an unjust government is imperative, and it will be a moral victory even if the resistance is crushed.
The June rebellion in Les mis May have been repressed, and it may have failed in its goal of overthrowing the monarchy— but later rebellions did eventually succeed. France doesn’t have a monarchy anymore. A democracy is now in place, the way the rebels of 1832 would’ve wanted. There’s an undercurrent of hope throughout Les Mis— it’s not a story about how rebellion/resistance is futile, it’s a story about how it’s necessary, and about how positive social change is not only possible but also inevitable.

Alucard redraw Pt. 2! The set is now complete :] .𖥔 ݁ ˖ִ ࣪₊ ⊹˚
"I don't like Alucard's new design"
Bitch, it's not fucking new. It's literally how he looks from Symphony of the Night. That game he is most popular from because the character design we know him for is from that game and it's all thanks to Ayami Kojima's art. Learn the fandom's history before you speak like a dumb ass.
If you want to talk about "new" Alucard design, then it must be Genya Arikado from Grimoire of Souls (which should have stayed with us and played on consoles). You people will never survive black-haired Alucard that looks like his father. He is beautiful either way.

I'm glad Castlevania: Nocturne chose the style more similar to the original to portray Alucard. Breathtakingly beautiful.
