Northern reticence, the tight gag of place And times: yes, yes. Of the 'wee six' I sing Where to be saved you only must save face And whatever you say, you say nothing.

Every so often I come back to the work of Tiane Doan na Champassak. It's always caught my attention and interested me but I've also always been uncertain of it. I think this challenge is part of the appeal. It's conceptual but also feels like pure documentary, very much showing an aspect of the world. I feel these are often presented as opposites when perhaps they go more hand in hand than we're willing to admit. It's an aspect of photography where its subjective and objective nature is confronted. Beyond that I do really like the use of appropriated material, it appeals to me intellectually if not always aesthetically. Then it's complete respect for the volume of work and the commitment to the method of dissemination. Photos and videos of the books can be seen at the Siam's Guy Books website
