Hot damn, we finally have a worthy contender! This is how you adapt the story, the character! The count is a possessed alien with an alternate golden universe in his basement! Gankutsuou understands that the Count of Monte Cristo is not a perspective character, and this is fundamental to its success. Gankutsuou takes a lot of liberties with the source material, especially in its final episodes, but it earns them in a build up that proves that it has a grasp on the narrative and its themes. This is a different medium and it can't be the same - and Gankutsuou is the first adaptation I've seen to meaningfully recognize this and adapt the right elements. Not the flashy, best-known bits (sayonara, Abbé Faria) but the fundamental themes, the essence of the titular character. I'm struggling to keep within my self-imposed single paragraph (I haven't even mentioned the wild art nouveau textures!) because I am just so impressed and grateful that this exists.
