After having gone thru acct recovery a couple times early in the days of OneDrive, I got the vibe that saving ANYTHING to a propriatary service was a huge mistake, ESP anything MS. Nice to see that vibe continues to check out.

MS does not care how many years of your life you have backed up to their cloud- they can take it away/delete it for any reason at any time. Keep your stuff local on an external drive.

Don’t care if it’s a hackneyed nerd cliche, it’s true: the Cloud is just Someone Else’s Computer. If you keep all your stuff on someone else’s computer it’s not reliably secure. Because you don’t really control it. Someone else does. Because it’s on their computer. Which is not yours.

The most famous documentary about the flat earth movement is "Behind the Curve" (2018). Three of the major figures in that film are (1) Patricia Steere (host of one of the most popular flat earth podcasts), (2) Jeran Campanella (host of another of the most popular flat earth podcasts), and (3) Robbie Davidson (host of the most popular flat earth conference).

In early 2025, all three of them renounced flat earth theory, in direct response to the observations of the "Final Experiment" Antarctica expedition (which Jeran went on).

After traveling from Chile to Union Glacier Camp in West Antarctica, expedition members livestreamed the midnight sun for several days. The participating flat Earthers all admitted that the midnight sun was a real phenomenon.

Very nice to see that minds can actually be changed! I recall a lot of skepticism on whether this would actually work.

Duffy stated of the overall reaction from flat Earthers: "The flat Earth community is imploding. They cannot decide what to believe. They've all come up with their own conspiracies." (...) The larger flat Earth community has largely rejected the results and accused the participants, including the flat Earthers, of having faked the expedition and of being part of a larger conspiracy to promote the spherical Earth model.

Interesting to see that while the larger community isn't convinced, this still seems to have deeply disrupted them because no one can agree on how it was faked

Whenever I see one of these takes I just think about what it must be like to be the parent of a severely autistic child who's like, non-verbal and needs constant supervision and will never be able to live independently, and you go looking for resources online and discover that the "autism community" online is entirely built around the needs and interests of self-diagnosed "neurodivergent" people like that OP who think being mildly bad at socializing makes them magic.

I feel like everyone admiring Walton Goggins' great performance in Fallout needs to be aware of the incredibly dumb but hilarious ongoing bit on the Jordan, Jesse, Go! podcast where they were making fun of celebrity booze brands and getting listeners to devise theme songs for them which culminated in someone doing a super high-effort rendition of "Walton Goggins Has a Vodka" to the tune of Leonard Cohen's "Halleluljah".
