❧ — “Never again…?”
"Never again will you see me smile. Keep that in mind, Shintarou."
❧ — The greenet sat in focused silence, staring at the shogi board with narrowed green optics. It had been a while since he last sat across from his former captain in a game of shogi. Was it since their last day of middle school? Midorima had lost count.
The sound of Akashi’s voice snapped the shooting guard out of his focus. He looked up at the redhead, green optics meeting with Akashi’s mismatched ones. A tilt of the head was given. With a quick motion and a glance back to the board, he moves one of his own shogi pieces. The redhead never liked it when Midorima took too long.
He could see how much Akashi had changed since they had last really played back in middle school. His former captain’s eyes now held an even colder stare, sending a small shiver down the bespectacled male’s spine. The emperor eye even gave Midorima nightmares at one point. "Well…." Midorima started. He paused for a moment, evaluating the situation on the wooden board.
"Yes and no," he finally said, choosing his words carefully. "I mean, it was good for us to move on and find new teammates. To meet new people and experience different views, and to get rid of that ridiculous mindset in which we only mastered our individual skills…"
The greenet then took a breath and returned his gaze to Akashi.
"But…. It kind of ruined what we had, I guess. If there was anything, nanodayo."
So he was nervous. There had been instances- his own intuition really- when he felt as though Midorima had been nervous around him. It had appeared that their time apart had not remedied that, though the redhead supposed nothing was corrected instantly.
A good move. It was still nice to see that the other hadn't lost his touch, though they both knew it was only a matter of time before Akashi had obtained the win. His eyes scanned the board over once before glancing back up at the bespectacled male as he spoke.
"So to you teamwork still beats individuals achieving a goal together?" Akashi picked up a piece and turned it over in his hand, observing the small wooden token slowly before placing it back in the same spot. "Though, I will admit that I had never thought to use your shooting form like that. That was very resourceful of your point guard."
Picking up another piece, he placed it in a different spot, beginning to place a little pressure on the other now. Once his move was complete, he looked back at Midorima, a brow raised in question to him. He was able to tell as well, that things were different in a very uncomfortable way, but how?
"What exactly do you think it is that's ruined? Our skills have only gotten sharper after all."
❧ — ”Your eyes,” A pause. “They’re so unsettling, nanodayo.”
"... Then never again."
❧ — ”Don’t look at me like that… nanodayo…”
"But what's wrong with how I look?"
Message me 1 thing you want to know about me.
Sei-chan~! -dives and latches onto-
"Satsuki?"
Akashi didn't have a lot of notice before the girl plowed into him, latching her arms around his neck. Smiling fondly, he supposed this was just like her in middle school as well. "It's been a while hasn't it? I haven't seen you since middle school, is that right?"
"I'm glad you could join me today, Shintarou."
Akashi overlooked the board, a confident smile on his face. It had been a while since the two of them were in this setting, playing shogi together. Though, he believed it was the first time the other had set foot into his house let alone his room. At the very least though, it was a warm enough day in the spring to open the doors since his room led to the outside. Moving his shogi piece on the board, he looks back to his friend. "I wanted to ask you something, but it didn't seem fit while we were at the Winter Cup. Now that we're starting again as second years though, I think this is a good time."
Looking directly into Midorima's eyes, he could see a bit of the changes that had happened over the year. Some of those had strengthened him, and yet some have also weakened him at least in Akashi's own eyes. Still, that was a mystery yet to be determined if he was wrong about. "Do you think this year of being separated served us well? Of course none of us were ever good friends in particular, but you must have felt it as well when facing each other... There was a certain disparity in play between when we all played together and when we did not. Was it a good choice to go to separate schools?"
Please reblog this as silent permission for me to rp with you.
"It’s not my choice. I’ll play, we’ll win this year and then I’ll leave the team to focus on studying for university exams." Words softer but no less clipped; short and to the point rather than flowery, joking about his maiden heart and th such. "What did you need? It’s not like you to speak to us unless you want something." Besides, knowing that the redhead had thrown Mayuzumi aside so callously was chilling; even if he had hated playing side by side with someone whose abilities paled and hindered them.
"Well, I guess to be blunt, I will not command subjects who don't wish to listen. There are some I can discipline quickly, but if I can't, then I have no need for them. I've already abandoned you once, though that was because you could not meet my expectations. Should you become listless and unwilling to cooperate as well... Well, one of us would have to step down." He sends Mibuchi a sharp look, hoping the other would understand. "And I hardly step down, unless it's in the best interest for victory. Hence, if the three of you no longer wish to have me as your captain, I will allow it and pass on my title to someone else. If not... You will continue to listen to me."
♒
"Shouldn’t you buy me dinner first?" The sassy reply had slipped out unbidden and he found himself hesitating. How bold, and he had only a refusal to expect in exchange. How embarrassing! "That is, I was joking Sei-Chan. Your face was wonderful though." Laughing lightly.
"I suppose I should. Eikichi likes to eat a meal before our games and practice matches, so I suppose I should give you the option to eat too. Very well, where would you like to eat?" Akashi stopped, looking up at the older male patiently. It was a good point, and the redhead had to admit that he was a little famished himself. A quick meal could do them both some good.
"Is that a compliment? Hard to tell…” His gaze doesn’t waver though, warmth flickering in his chest. Then doused by the recollection of that Seirin-Rakuzan match. “Thank you, I suppose.” Tone becoming a little clipped.
"Well it was intended as a compliment, but I suppose you could take it how you'd like." Akashi's relatively good mood was hampered by the tone the taller male used. So he was still upset. "Tell me... The three of you will still be able to play on the team next year, so if you no longer want me as your captain, you have the choice."
“Sei-Chan that’s rude! But Can I help you with anything?”
"Well whenever you hesitate it's usually cause to worry. You're usually so bold I wouldn't ever expect you to stop yourself from doing something."
"Nijimura, what a surprise. I haven't seen you in a long time. How's your family doing?"
"Is it a surprise? I don’t see any reason for you to come to a low class restaurant like this suddenly…" His doubts are clear and well founded, in any case he accepts the courtesies. "My family are fine, my father’s health has improved. Yourself?"
"You didn’t make it easy for me to pick a school, did you." More statement than question but he did wonder what the other meant by ‘for the best’. How arrogant, he wanted to flick his forehead again but resisted. "Well, it doesn’t matter which one I pick so long as I decide soon." Dismissing the topic altogether lest the redhead have more to add. Scratching his cheek absently. "So, which school did Shougo attend?" He clearly didn’t hear that Akashi had ejected the other nor has he heard of any subsequent developments. He asks more for his own curiosity then anything and oddly enough he quite misses the other considering he always made so much trouble for him.
"No, I suppose I didn't, but I always thought you were good enough to handle it, Nijimura." Akashi took note on how the subject was dismissed, though he didn't particularly have any qualms over it. It was such a... rudimentary topic for conversation after all. "Still interested in Shougo, huh? You always did try your hardest to include him in everything." Pausing, he studied his old captain for a moment before continuing on. "Shougo goes to Fukuda Sougo Academy right now. He's continuing basketball, but I think he takes it less seriously now than he did back in middle school."

And who are you? The proud lord said that I must bow so low?
Only a cat of a different coat, that’s all the truth I know.
And a coat of [blue] and a coat of red.
A [panther] still has claws. And mine are long and sharp, my lord.
Long and sharp as yours…
"Akashi…." Aomine speaks the name with a hiss of pent up anger; anger built up over the years their time together as teammates at Teikou. Aomine has a good reason to be anger, but now was not the time to act on this emotions. Currently he is in a battle with the redhead, one where Aomine needs all of his concentration.
The panther narrows his eyes at the redhead. He’s never been so angry with his former captain, his friend, and now his opponent. Its always the intimidation, the cold look in your eyes that can throw even the greatest of kings into a shake of fear. Aomine raises his clenched fist higher into the air and continue to stare at the the redhead.
"Rock, paper, SHOOT!" Aomine throws down rock and again, for the fifth time in a row, Akashi wins.
"ARRRGHHHH!" Aomine cries out in defeat.
As the challenge was called, Akashi merely raised a brow. Though he very much enjoyed it when the ace became serious, how could the bluenette seriously believe to win against him. After so many countless battles, never has Akashi been beaten, and that was the way it would stay.
"Oh, come on, Daiki. After all this time you can't seriously believe that you'll beat me." Smirking at Aomine, he closed his hand again from the paper he previously held it out as. Outsmarting the other in a simple game of rock, paper, scissors was never too hard of a challenge at all. It seemed to inspire confidence in his opponents however.
"Would you like to continue losing or just quit now? After all, there are other things I can beat you in too."
