@ my followers being affected by hurricanes / what to do during and after a storm
I lived thru Ike and recently only a year ago, Harvey. Here are some (basic) but trustworthy tips I’ve seen/been told over the years!
- Portable chargers. Walmart sells them for six-ten bucks! Buy multiple! And actually charge them!
- Documentation (vaccines, hospital records, school info, documents about your home, literally anything important) should be stored in folders. Place them in a plastic bag and wrap em safely. Keep it in a bag you know you will take. IF YOU HAVE TIME AND THE WILL, scan your documents beforehand!
- Keep a bag with clothes, food, chargers, money, etc if you’re planning to wait out the storm. Put your documents in your bag!
- photos are irreplacable
-If traffic is bad or you know you cant make it out in time, stay home and stay safe! We had that issue during Harvey!
- Radios! Batteries! Flashlights!
- Place water in your bathtubs. Trust me.
- If you are driving, be careful. Some roads might be flooded and you won’t realize until you get there.
- For the love of everything holy, do not drive in the eye of the storm. If you have to, keep a hammer in case your car gets flooded. break your window and try to get out! again, it only takes seconds for you to drown!
- Take out cash. Do not rely on cards!
- Take! Your! Pets! If you are evacuating, make sure to bring canned/dry food, their vaccination records, adoption papers, anything they need (ie. meds). Bring a cage and a small bed.
- For pets, use a portable water slash food container to save space. I got one for my dog for only five bucks, and it wasn’t even a huge one. Bring waste bags, bring toys and make sure they stay comfortable. Remember, they get anxiety, too.
- If you are evacuating, be careful when it comes to leaving pets in shelters! Esp if you’re at a high-risk zone!
- During Harvey, many people risked their lives and went out in boats to help rescue others. Firefighters/EMT/Police were desperate enough to encourage this because we were hit hard. Please, if you are willing to do this, wear a life jacket and stay safe! People died doing this!
- FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DO NOT GO OUT AND PLAY/SWIM IN A DITCH AFTER THE STORM
- IF YOU SEE THE LOCAL KIDS DOING IT, TELL THEM TO GO INSIDE THEIR HOMES! CABLES COULD BE ON THE FLOOR AND THE LEVEL OF WATER WONT LET YOU SEE! WE HAD THAT ISSUE DURING HARVEY!
- it may be tempting to steal your neighbor’s sofa but please dont, hurricanes bring high levels of bacteria
-if you go out during a storm and a water bottle 12 pc is suddenly an abnormally high price (or anything!) DO NOT fight with the person selling! Snap a pic of the price tag, your receipt and file a proper complain after the storm! This is illegal! but pls, if you need the water or whatever supply, TAKE IT
