“Dumpling” is a short film based on the director’s lived experience of moving from China to a predominantly white, rural American town when she was 14. The story takes place on Xiao Xing’s first day of high school after the move, where she begins to feel othered and isolated in her public school cafeteria. She preserves her identity by eating dumpling she brought from home. “Dumpling” blends traditional narrative with magical realism to reflect on the struggle to belong.

Hey friend, I miss you. If we haven’t seen each other, or I keep not following thru with plans, know that it is not you, it is painful for me to not be able to spend time with you. This is the trickiest thing I’m learning to balance in this life, that chose me and I’m lucky to choose it too. No, this is not a note about loner artists doing their things in isolation. This is my growth in learning about dedication, giving the process the time it deserves to unfold, and sit patiently with the discomforts, big and small. I’m grateful in so many levels of the connections that fill me up and catch me if I fall down. None of my family members pursued anything related to art or films, I could never explain what I do to my grandparents. I didn’t realize how much I have identified with this, and forgetting that all of them absolutely love music, poetry, singing, and performing. I don’t owe nobody nothing, but I owe it to my grandma who didn’t have a chance to pursue her life and dreams. I did not take too much time to dedicate. In fact, we got all the time in the world to uncover the essence. Remember, Xiaolu loves you from afar. 🧡 P.S.
