one of my favorite parts of my time in cabo was buying these beautiful pieces. mi amigo me contó la historia sobre la chalina y rebozo. these scarves have been made since the 16th century, and the spanish colonizers brought different intricate weaving techniques with dye & fabrics from eurasia. he said the technique is not as popular anymore, & i was surprised to find out it is patrilineal. women from the state of present-day San Luis Potosí wear these to hold their babies, & also wore them to hold their guns during the revolución when they took up arms to fight. the earrings are from the Huichol tribe, in the present-day areas of Nayarit, Jalisco, Zacatecas, and Durango. the design of the earrings are called peyote, which is based on their special ceremonial journey using the plant of the same name. also, long live frida kahlo.
