My fursona - Michael The Solenogaster
What's a solenogaster and what does it do?
A solenogaster is a living fossil from the early days of snails. They live in the arctic circle in and around undersea vents.
They are covered in bladed scutes, that gives them the appearance of being hairy, when in fact it's more like overlapping scales.
This and their armored internal tract, enable them to survive extreme conditions, such as boiling and freezing temperatures, corrosive and toxic environments, and fend off competition from deadly bacteria, all of which are present in their native environment.
They survive by swallowing bacteria, absorbing them into their bloodstream, then fighting the diseases to break them down into nutrients.
They actually lack the ability to digest food conventionally.
This weird ability also enables them to survive, in areas where the oxygen saturation is near 0%, by extracting oxygen from the bacteria they absorb.
They are not relatives of sea snails, nor sea slugs, but are in fact close relatives of nautilus, making them closer relatives of land snails, than any ocean mollusc, despite how they look.
Solenogaster will sometimes ride inside the gut of other animals intentionally, since the environment inside animals, is more favorable than their native environment.
Their extreme adaptations allow them to pass right through the gut without issue.
Solenogaster will also sometimes trap other creatures inside its gut, not to digest them, but because those animals have come from richer environments and their skin/scales will be covered in bacteria.
The solenogaster's body never closes fully on either end for too long, and its gut is straight along its length from beginning to end, so nothing they consume will suffocate, due to the access to fresh drinking water.
You see, visitors from outside the area are rare, and it wouldn't work to a solenogaster's advantage if they were to die o the first encounter, since any visitors are there for a reason, they need the nutrients, and that means an individual will return, carrying more of that sweet bacteria with them.
this symbiotic relationship of swallowing and being swallowed is an extreme survival strategy, but it does play into the popular paraphilia known as "vore".
As such the species only discovered in 2021 has become an icon in certain niche vore communities.
And that's why it's the species of my fursona.
