âI get it more than you know.â Carolineâs voice was hushed in tone as she spoke. âThereâs a lot more to this place than meets the eye. Sometimes stories arenât just stories.â Stepping inside as Mike held the door open, she noticed his gasp and it suddenly occurred to her that she wasnât the only one with a secret. âYou okay?â She asked, an eyebrow arched in curiousity. âMike, hi. Iâm Caroline.â Taking a seat at the table, she put her notebook down and leaned back in the chair, eyes scanning the room, ears picking up on conversations between other patrons.
âYeah, Iâll have a drink. Uh, scotch, neat.â Caroline said with a nod. âSo, Mike, you wanna talk more about what you saw back there?â
âReminds me of all folktales about fairies: this town is a crystal palace upon first glance. But dig a little deeper and it can be a land of nightmares.â Mike placed their order, handing their server his card to open up a tab. âMe? Yeah. Iâm great. It mustâve been the air con or something; it just startled me.â He was grateful when their drinks arrived, holding the glass in both hands. âIt sounds crazy. It feels unbelievable, even now.
âI was heading to get my palm read when I heard shouting and things being smashed. In one of the magic stores that sell charms or whatever? So I ducked my head in the doorway just in time to see two guys bite this lady - the owner, I think?â He frowned, âShe saw me and mouthed at me to run, so when those guys turned in my direction and I saw those sharp teeth? I bolted.â
