The idea of worshipping deities being scary, difficult, and not for beginners that’s being popularized on TikTok is literally so absurd. Like these gods were worshipped by entire civilizations for millennia. WHICH INCLUDED LITERAL CHILDREN??? So no, you don’t have to be some advanced witch to start interacting with deities. If seven year olds could do it, so can you.

i find it interesting that i’ve so far seen heathens attributing covid-19 to Loki and hellenic pagans attributing it to Apollo, both with the reasoning “it’s just like them to force us to acknowledge the flaws in our system”

I feel somewhat uncomfortable with rhetoric attributing 50,000 deaths (and counting) worldwide to divine justice, it reminds me of that “everything happens for a reason”/“God will never put you through something you can’t handle” shit. I don’t think a god sent the virus so much as that I’m counting on my gods to use this disaster to bring attention to the already unconscionable and increasingly precarious state of the world we live in; the assumptions we make about how it works, how it must work, how it will always work.
Within a week we transformed many aspects of our society to deal with a crisis that required mass action and mass mutual aid, including policies that politicians have insisted for our entire lives are “pie in the sky” being approved practically overnight because this epidemic threatens not only our lives, but the lives and livelihoods of the idle rich and powerful as well. We also went almost overnight from assuming our lives would continue to be what we saw as “normal” to seeing people fistfight over toilet paper and seeing people getting laid off or given no hours at work en masse but still being expected to pay rent. We saw within a week the real power that we hold: if we stay home, don’t work and don’t buy stuff, the powers that be are suddenly ready to compromise and people who said single payer healthcare and UBI were evil commie propaganda are not just supporting it, but demanding it.
We’ve seen very quickly and very cruelly the consequences of refusing to vote in favor of using our taxes to fund public healthcare and labor rights, things that would not have averted the disaster but would have slowed it and saved untold numbers of lives. We’ve seen the consequences of allowing the people who call themselves the leaders of the nation, make these decisions for us -because they chose not to act quickly enough, and thousands have been infected because of their complacency. Our own actions, the choices we as a society have made up to this point, have always had consequences, and the nation being woefully unprepared to deal with this epidemic is one of them. Our own actions in the days to come will determine how many survive, and for how long. Our actions in the weeks and months to come will determine if we allow ourselves to build a world that’s better, or worse, because of what we’ve learned.
I don’t think things will ever go back to normal, and I know following Set for seven years before a disaster happened helped prepare me for it -even if we were to assume the gods weren’t real, the act itself has helped me cope both practically and mentally with the rapid changes needed to my expectations, point of view, and lifestyle. That’s how I see the Dread Initiator in this instance; not as the source of the virus, but as the possibility of learning and changing, hopefully as a group, through the difficult and confusing days to come.
I agree with smarm’s sentiment. We should not be attributing any of this to any of our gods for the reasons they listed.
That said, in the FB groups I’m in, I’ve seen an uptick in people trying to appease Sekhmet. She was the ancient Egyptian deity that was the giver and healer of plagues, so the people, in their fear, turn to her to stop it.
I don’t agree with what they’re doing but I’m also not going to shit all over people who are terrified. They’re turning to their religion (just as everyone else has done in the past or is currently doing) in a time of crisis.
To me, this virus is a thing that exists in the natural world, not sent by anyone, it just /is/.
If I had to attribute it to anything in our pantheon, I’d attribute it to isfet. Particularly our response to it.
Since illnesses were often attributed to Sekhmet, I get why people are invoking her. I would, if only to ask her to help to heal people, not because I think she needs pacification to take it back. The Egyptians may have believed that illness came at the hands of the gods, but we know better now and should act accordingly.
I’ve met my fair share of Christians who seem to think this is god’s way of teaching us a lesson. I’d like for the polytheist community to not give into that abusive and destructive line of thinking, tbh.

am i the only one who is bothered by people referring to kemeticism as the “kemetic fandom”?
like a fandom is something you attribute to a tv show, movie, book, etc. kemeticism is none of these.
at least for me, kemeticism is a lifestyle, an integral part of my life. so i find it disrespectful for people to refer to it as a “fandom”; because that’s not what it is.
It deeply bothers me too because it’s implying it’s not a religion personally.
But two tags help sort joke from serious.
The community has had this conversation multiple times. The tag is not meant to be disrespectful and imo is not. It seperates jokes and memes from serious hymns, upg and discussions so that people who would rather not see jokes don’t have to. That’s literally it. There’s no implication that Kemeticism isn’t a religion or that it’s not serious and worthy of veneration.
Yeah, nobody as far as I'm aware is calling the religion itself a "fandom", it's just a tag for people within the religion to goof off without intruding on the serious stuff.
It's like a facebook group full of grandmas called "jesus memes" or something isn't saying "jesus is a meme"

My first attempt at watercolor ended up as this mixed media piece- the ones that I got dried way too pale, so I ended up compensating with a mixture of… brush pen, colored pencil, and other inks to get where we are. Overall I’m not displeased! I learned a lot and I love looking at the piece in person. :D I’m excited to try more colored traditional work. a polytheistic worldview/theology is comforting in that deities/gods are neither omniscient nor omnipotent; there are gaps in their power and influence, holes in their knowledge, secrets even they do not know. there is not a claim to wholeness/totality, but a fractured knowing and experience that is richer for all of the bright, sharp edges.
