Akatsuki no Yona #276

Well that's it. (Kinda.)

I know I shouldn't be surprised at the continued push for Soo Won redemption, but 🤷‍♀️, I guess him admitting he was wrong and that killing Il was his own selfishness and calling himself a usurper IS as good as it was going to get at this point. Maybe ah, seven years ago Yona or Hak could have believably killed him but we were too deep into the redemption at this point. Soo Won had to offer himself up to be forgiven.

Hate that for me, honestly.

Love that all the dragons are going back to their homes to let their people know they too are free. That's an important note I hadn't even thought about, tbh. Hope that comes up in the epilogue.

All in all I feel this has been well worth the investment of 15 years of my life. At the same time, glad to finally get closure on this. It's not perfect, I feel like the last few panels could have done more with the costuming and the coronation. It felt just slightly rushed in the last few panels as far as pacing goes. But still. The bonus/epilogue thing exists, so there is that.

OH and Anime sequel confirmed after like a full decade or so. Holy crap. There were like only 12 episodes or something of the first one, right? I can't even remember. I was practically a whole other person then. I lived on the other side of planet. That was three jobs and like five apartments ago. Who could POSSIBLY recall?

Akatsuki no Yona #275

God, Zeno. That last page had me ugly crying for a good 5 minutes.

Yona and Hak and all of the others have been amazing throughout this story, but the most impactful moments throughout the manga have almost always been Zeno's. With maybe a few notable exceptions of that one chapter of baby Shin-Ah and Ao, which I still think about from time to time, I have spent years and years haunted by Zeno's wife giving him a reason to speak about himself in the third person.

I'm a single woman, frikken middle aged now and I was NOT when this started! But I'm asexual and single and childless and all by choice and I absolutely sometimes call myself by my own name sometimes just because I feel like if someone else were in my home with me it would be a situation where that hypothetical person would have used my actual name. And it sometimes carries over to my workplace and other public interactions.

I don't know. I do feel so impacted by Zeno.

Anyway. After all of these years of me saying "oh this feels like it's ramping up to an ending", were finally here. I think I started posting these manga reviews on this account in 2015 after I deleted my old account. So that's been me writing about this on this one account for over 10 years now. Doing it on a previous account longer. And then reading it even longer than that. It's pretty much the longest continuous relationship I have had with a single manga in my life. I do not typically like these very very long things. I have no idea how I've managed this, and I'm just reading it. Mad props to Kusanagi Mizuho and her assistants for absolutely killing it for ... God almost 20 years.

Literal only complaint is obviously that Soo Won is obviously going to survive and be totally fine and might even suffer no consequences. I will go to the grave not appreciating the "oh well I guess he's what the country needs" (strength and war) and ignoring the absolute dereliction of duty from the apathetic clan leaders who used Yona's father's pacifism as a reason to let the people in their respective regions starve.

Akatsuki no Yona 273-4

Missed an update. How dare I. Especially here, at the end of all things. Literally TWO CHAPTERS LEFT according to the note on the first page of 274, holy shit what a run. For me it's been 2011ish until now. My history with this manga is as old as my cat. Who is almost 15. So wtf.

Anyhow. Amazing chapters. Good drama. Good connections between the characters. Could wish Soo Won stayed in the river/ocean of death, I will literally never get over this, I do not give a single shit.

Perhaps the thing about Hak could have come up more than two chapters before the end but 🤷‍♀️. Whatever. It doesn't matter, really. Seems unnecessary. Just explains why he can do what he does.

Anyhow, love it.

Akatsuki no Yona #272

Genuinely, I know we're sliding into the end here, and I'm so happy about it. Every chapter I'm like good God I've been reading this comic since 2011, and I love it so much and I'm going to miss it so much when it's done, and this arc has been SO GOOD but God I want closure.

I do like what Kusinagi has done artistically with Zeno's ... Unraveling. Artistically, I mean. Still a good choice there. Which is interesting, because the sort of wobbly art for the shadowy bad guys in the last arc I hated so much. This tho I like.

Anyway, great chapter. Can't wait for the next.

2025 has been a year in regards to the spectrum of Asexuality, as a sex repulsed Asexual, I'm extremely disappointed in the attempted separation of our community based around rather or not someone is a sex-repulsed Asexual, if you are not sex-repulsed but you are Ace, you are just as Asexual as me, the creation of a hierarchy within communities can lead to catastrophe and we need to avoid that.. Asexuality IS a spectrum and it's VALID ♠️💜

The tailors at Colonial Williamsburg made a suit for their cat

The best part is that they were inspired by a diary entry from 1775, written by a 12 year old tailor’s apprentice (Edit: Slight correction, he didn’t write it when he was 12, this was him recounting an incident from when he was 12, some years later.) who had been left unsupervised all day and decided to make a suit for a cat. Here’s a link to the blog post about it, but I’ll just paste the whole diary entry here:

“I had been at work about two months when Christmas came on – and here I must relate a little anecdote. The principal [the tailor] and his lady were invited to a party among their friends…while it devolved on me to stay at home and keep house. There was nothing left me in charge to do, only to take care of the house. There was a large cat that generally lay about the fire. In order to try my mechanical powers, I concluded to make a suit of clothing for puss, and for my purpose gathered some scraps of cloth that lay about the shop-board, and went to work as hard as I could. Late in the evening I got my suit of clothes finished; I caught the cat, put on the whole suit – coat, vest, and small-clothes [breeches] – buttoned all on tight, and set down my cat to inspect the fit. 

“Unfortunately for me there was a hole through the floor close to the fireplace, just large enough for the cat to pass down; after making some efforts to get rid of the clothes, and failing, pussy descended through the hole and disappeared; the floor was tight and the house underpinned with brick, so there was no chance of pursuit. I consoled myself with a hope that the cat would extricate itself from its incumbrance, but not so; night came and I had made on a good fire and seated myself for some two or three hours after dark, when who should make their appearance but my master and mistress and two young men, all in good humor, with two or three bottles of rum. After all were seated around the fire, who should appear amongst us but the cat in his uniform. I was struck speechless, the secret was out and had no chance of concealing; the cat was caught, the whole work inspected and the question asked, is this your day’s work? I was obliged to answer in the affirmative; I would then have been willing to take a good whipping, and let it stop there, but no, to complete my mortification the clothes were carefully taken off the cat and hung up in the shop for the inspection of all customers that came in.”

Holy yes, baby. That's a chapter. The drama. The violence. The self sacrifice, love and malace.

The art is a little sloppy in places, but it's sort of forgivable as a thematic choice as most characters are sort of being pulled and parted aside from themselves so the unclear lines and misshapen, almost liquid eyes work in this context, where I'd usually expect a little more polish in AnY.

Anyhow, banger of a chapter. Loved it.
