Do you have any triggers?
Jello, Popsicles, Soup Broth.
Nah, I never joke about Jello, Popsicles, and Soup Broth…
Indeed, I am!
I’m a disability advocate whose triggers are Jello, Popsicles, and Soup Broth.
I legit just lost a follower over this.
They must be really big fans of Jello and/or Popsicles and/or Soup Broth.
For those who have trouble detecting sarcasm - the last sentence about them being fans of said foods was sarcastic. But a few people have really unfollowed me over this.
The other three replies, including the original, are serious.
Jello, Popsicles, and Soup Broth are my legit triggers. I would never joke about that.
I know it sounds bizarre. But trust me, I’m serious.
(I’m also not a big fan of fluorescent lights.)
It should be noted that I haven’t received this many death threats since the Great Snape War of 2013.
This is by far my favorite reply:
All right, folks, take your seats, because class is now in session! Let’s have a little talk…
Yeah, yeah, I know it’s Saturday, but learning is fun.
I’ve had seven surgeries in my lifetime and will probably have many more in the future. And one such surgery, which happened about nine years ago, involved really fun (*sarcasm*) things like tubes that are shoved up your nose and end up in your stomach (I know, I didn’t think it was possible either until they did it), eight gallons of really disgusting fluid, pain, lots of pain, and the direct order that I had to evacuate every single bit of food that was inside me.
And that was before the surgery even began!
After the surgery, I had to stay in the hospital for about a month.
And I was on what’s called a clear-liquid diet.
What’s a clear-liquid diet?
For this particular hospital:
Water, Jello, Popsicles, and Soup Broth.
A meal that was delivered to my hospital room three times a day.
That’s all I was allowed to eat.
For those of you who enjoy doing math: I was in the hospital for a month, which is roughly 30 days. I had to eat this meal three times a day. That’s 90 bowls of soup broth, 90 containers of Jello, and 90 Popsicles. Ninety times I had to eat these things. In the span of a month. 90.
Which means that nine years later, I am actually physically unable to eat these three items without vomiting. It’s a sensory trigger.
So why didn’t I talk about this from the beginning instead of enduring four death-threats, six unfollows, and nineteen messages/comments (not including the death threats and the ones that just said ‘Popsicles, Jello, Soup Broth’ over and over again)?
Well, there’s two reasons.
A.) I don’t have to. People don’t ever have to explain why something is triggering to them. Once they say that it is, it should just be a given.
And
B.) The above comment is right. I am a disability advocate. And part of that advocacy includes advocating on behalf of people with triggers. And so, you’ve all been part of a social experiment for the past few hours - an experiment to see how people react when they see that someone has really bizarre triggers (out-of-context).
And I’m a bit sad to say that many of you have failed. Even other people with triggers and/or other advocates.
So listen because this is really important:
I know that triggers are a sensitive subject and I know that there are people out there who do joke about them.
But there are even more people out there who have triggers that seem really bizarre and even silly.
And you know what?
You cannot invalidate those triggers.
You cannot assume that someone is joking, you cannot assume that they’re mocking other people with triggers that are more commonplace or ‘sensible’, you cannot assume that they are anything less than genuine.
If someone tells you that they have a trigger, you need to believe them, no matter how bizarre it might seem.
Class Dismissed.
You know, I was just gonna leave it at “THIS ^” but I’m on tumblr, and feel like I should add a little more substance and honesty to the whole thing. I was almost drowned by a close friend of mine a few years ago at a pool/birthday party. And as such, swimming, pools, birthdays, birthday parties, and people touching my shoulders trigger me. But as a teenager in a set of years where birthdays and pool parties are celebrated and obsessed with Only One of my friends takes them all seriously. ONE. This message is incredibly important. Respect people’s triggers, even if they seem a bit strange. There’s a story behind everything.
And there are people claiming that entering people into an experiment without telling them was a dick move, and it really wasn’t.
This is how you determine who people truly are.
Because there are people who claim to advocate the awareness of mental illness. And there are those who swear that they are kind to people with triggers and try to be the best they can be. That they try to be considerate and spread the news.
But they lie. And this showed it.
This was not presented as a joke or a funny story. It simply said ‘Jello, Popsicles, Soup Broth.’ Nothing even remotely funny. It was a fucking list.
‘Nah, I never joke about Jello, Popsicles, and Soup Broth…’ Also not funny. Since non of the words were bolded or italicized, there is literally no inflection or drama in the words.
If it was ‘ Nah, I never joke about Jello, Popsicles, and Soup Broth… ‘ then it could be taken as sarcasm, but it wasn’t. No one should have to write 500+ words to validate themselves to someone and these assholes made it happen.
People throwing shade, insults, and death threats are really just scum of the earth and now they are offended because they were proven to be the trash they truly are.

here’s a bit of advice I’ve learned so far in my few years as an adult (especially while working retail): never apologize unless someone asks you to.
In customer service, a customer’s attitude can completely shift if you so much as insinuate that something could be wrong. Never ever ever let them think that something might be wrong. It will save you from getting yelled at.
This can also go for a lot of other things as well. You have to do a speech for class? Do NOT ever apologize while giving your speech, no matter how awkward you feel. Apologizing for being awkward will draw far more attention to your awkwardness than anything else. You’re a couple minutes late for something rather than on-time? Odds are, it might have just gone under the radar. You liked a ton of posts on someones blog (something I get DMs apologizing for a lot)? Maybe it’s just me, but I literally never check my activity. And if I do happen to notice, I wouldn’t find it anything except flattering.
I get people struggle with anxiety and overanalyze every little action they do. But to those people and anyone else who might need to hear this, I promise you, no one cares about little slip-ups nearly as much as you think they do.
The point is, apologizing for something that might be inconsequential might just make people think they should be upset, when otherwise they never would’ve even noticed that there could be something to be upset about. It’s fine. You’re fine.
Today is a great day!! I am officially DONE with my Master’s degree! I’m so excited to have this under my belt and I’m extremely proud of myself for making it this far. It was definitely hard more often than not, and this past semester kind of took me away from my friends and family and the things I love doing most, but now that it’s over I’ll be able to focus more on taking care of me. And that includes being more active here too! Much love 💕
La-HA! hit me like a fucking drug.

I looked up the menu for the restaurant this is based on and i wanted to die.
there are foods here that i would eat, but i would never say “awakening” instead of “keylime pie”
and what is “translate truthful to the time it was written” even supposed to mean like there’s no way a translation now in the US could be read the same way it was a couple thousand years ago in Greece when english didn’t even exist yet
Yep, in the original Odyssey, in the scene where Telemachus murders the slaves who were “sullied by” Penelope’s suiters, he refers to them with a word that roughly just means “the female ones”, however most translations will use words like “whores”, “sluts” and “creatures”, these were all choices of the translators. The original text did not refer to them that way. Dr. Wilson refers to them instead as “girls”, to highlight their age and the brutality of the action. She also fixed all the times the previous male translators dodged around the existence of slaves in the text. Where they call slaves anything but slaves (housemaid, nurse, cook, ect.) Dr. Wilson’s translation correctly calls them slaves as in the original texts. It’s really a great translation, it doesn’t soften anything, and lays bare the reality of the story. One thing she did too, was she refused to make the descriptions of the women in the story more palatable to modern western beauty standards. The original text, for example, describes Penelope’s hands as “thick”. Most male translators change this to “steady” but Dr. Wilson’s translation calls them “firm, muscular hands” to correctly portray the original intent, that Penelope, as a character who weaves every day and every night undoes her weavings, has strong hands, as weaving does make one’s hands more muscular, and that was clearly what was originally intended to be said given the context of her character and the weavings. Of Odysseus himself, the original epic calls him “polytropos” poly, meaning many, and tropos, meaning turn. Some male translators used this to say the story itself had twists and turns, other ignored the word completely to write in a way that made Odysseus seem as though a straight up hero, a man “skilled in all ways of contending”, but Dr. Wilson uses it to mean “complicated”, because Odysseus isn’t a straight up hero, he does some really shitty things. So her translation got a lot of men very very mad, because they said that her being a woman has caused her to translate with bias since her translation is so different to others. She pointed out that perhaps people should have suggested that bias in the inaccurate men’s translations. Anyway, go read Dr. Wilson’s version of The Odyssey. It’s very good.
unfriendly reminder that dehumanizing people - even the worst people - is a shitty tactic and you should employ it basically never.
look I’m too tired to explain this properly but when you erase the humanity of the scummiest people on the planet you erase the fact that the all those shitty, shitty things were done by a person. a real human chose to do those things. you erase humanity’s capacity for evil. you misrepresent reality. that’s…really not good. at all. and in addition to that dehumanization as a tactic has always been used against marginalized people - to harm and kill us in vast numbers - and turning it against bad people is also just pushing the idea that it’s an okay rhetorical tool to use, and that will always end up harming marginalized groups
Saying, “those people aren’t human; they’re monsters,” both avoids placing blame for how they got that way, and abdicates responsibility for making changes in the future to prevent more people from being like that.
Assuming that “rapists are monsters” means not blaming parents, schools, and the media for teaching boys that “a man’s got needs and it’s a woman’s job to provide sex!” It means pretending that there’s no way we could discourage rape in the future, no way to teach young men not to become rapists.
It also dodges the question of whether some of them could be redeemed, whether they could learn to understand what they did wrong and not do it in the future. But even if you don’t care about criminals’ redemption possibilities, you should care about creating a society that produces fewer criminals.
And we can’t do that, if people claim that criminality is a matter of “evil souls” instead of a combination of societal influences and personal choices, and how people learn to be criminals (or “monsters,” who may be doing horrible things that aren’t technically crimes) based on the consequences provided - or not provided - for their early actions.
It also neatly sidesteps the idea that you or someone you know can do shitty things. This is bad for victims, for two reasons.
The first is that it isolates victims and keeps them from being believed. “My best friend has been accused of rape? Well, the accuser must be lying, because rapists are horrible monsters and my friend is a wonderful person, therefore they can’t be a rapist.”
The second is that it keeps victims from realizing that they are victims. “My girlfriend can’t be abusive, because abusers are monsters and my girlfriend isn’t a monster. I must just be overreacting.”
Hey this is true when creating media, too! Be thoughtful about what language you use to describe your villains, and for what reasons.
