I’m so upp2 pilled right now and I really want to Discuss the scene of Mrs Brooks shutting the door on UPP because I think it gives a lot of insight to the members relationship with Deadwood as a community. Norah nearly shuts down, completely dejected and even a little lost, because we’ve seen (and heard) time and time again how much people Trust her, how she’s seen as the Responsible one, the one who should be defaulted to for the answers, and being boiled down to a “bad influence” really hits her hard. Lui is in this middle ground where he’s neither cherished nor denounced (like Isaac typically is), he has a good family and he has friends, he’s approachable and kind despite his oddities and therefor is Acceptable. Being seen as something bad and corruptive leaves him really self conscious and unsure of himself, he starts to doubt not only himself but also Isaac (“it’s not our fault he’s so good at being bad”). William, unlike Isaac and the rest of UPP, is basically a ghost to Deadwood. Despite having a mom who is so so loved and respected community wise (always there at every event, takes care of ill and old residents, etc etc) William is, at Most, seen as Odd and Pitiable. He isn’t an A+ student like Norah and he lacks the social fluency that Lui exhibits, but he also doesn’t have the obvious wildness that Isaac shows. He’s used to being excluded, and so being considered as less than by an authority figure basically does nothing to him. He doesn’t doubt Isaac, he doesn’t doubt himself, and he doesn’t doubt his friends

Thinking about the fact that Gillion was scraping the bottom of the barrel for validation SINCE EPISODE ONE. He grabbed Chip in his arms and leapt from one roof to the next, trying to look as majestic as possible, and his first instinct was to look to John to see if he thought he looked cool.

Gillion has been begging for validation his entire life to the point where once he doesn’t know where to get it from anymore, he’s looking for it from EVERYBODY. INCLUDING AND ESPECIALLY PEOPLE NOT EVEN ON HIS CREW. Marshall John is practically the living manifestation of Gillion’s need for acceptance and appreciation from authority figures and/or the powerful.
