Why I Think Wednesday Addams (particularly this adaptation) is AroAce.

Quick Definitions of Terms I’ll Be Using:

AroAce: someone who is on both the Asexual and Aromantic spectrum.

Asexual: experiencing little to no sexual attraction.

Aromantic: experiencing little to no romantic attraction.

Demiromantic: does not experience romantic attraction until they have formed a deep emotional connection with someone.

Greyromantic: experiencing romantic attraction but very infrequently.

——— Now let’s begin:

So I recently watched Wednesday and absolutely loved it!! I noticed specific things about this Wednesday that made me think she was AroAce. Despite her having feelings for Tyler, the way she acted around these non-platonic relations felt very familiar. I will say though, Tyler and her romance felt very forced (personally), but i digress.

In the first episode, Wednesday expresses to her parents, specifically her mother how she will “never be like her” and wishes to “never marry, or have kids” etc. which already began to intrigue me. An attitude and notion I had from a young age as well (and still agree with). Secondly, while on the drive to the academy, we see Wednesday get increasingly uncomfortable by her parents affection for each other (yes in general it can be gross to see our parents this way, but the nauseous feeling she mentions is relatable).

A Brief Look at Tyler & Wednesday:

A lot of the ways that Wednesday would react to Tyler’s advances in trying to be more than friends, she didn’t really pick up on (such as his attempts to flirt or ask her out). An example being, Tyler outside of the police station talking with Wednesday, “i thought you liked me” - Wednesday has this familiar face of confusion (and realization) that some might call asexual obliviousness (can’t tell when someone’s flirting, thinks their just being nice). At least, it’s familiar to me haha. Even when they do start to consider being more than friends, we see Wednesday sort of still confused by this possible romantic feelings that she hadn’t really taken the time to notice. Since beginning at the academy - She firstly never really had friends until going to the academy, and secondly, upon making friends then began to develop a romantic attraction.

Personally with such evidence that I saw, I would headcanon her as Asexual Demiromantic OR as Asexual Greyromantic. Maybe bias as an Asexual Demiromantic myself, but her character just felt too familiar in her sense of exploring platonic and non-platonic feelings.

Addressing some Misconceptions:

I’ve seen some discourse on here about people either wanting:

1) Enid & Wednesday as a ship

OR 2) to be AroAce.

I think some folks forget that AroAce people can still be in romantic relationships (or sexual relationships) and engage in romantic/sexual activities. Aromanticism and Asexuality have a broad spectrum of identities under their umbrella terms.

Enid, Wednesday, Tyler (and Xavier) thoughts:

I honestly think Enid & Wednesday would make a cute couple!! Tyler & Wednesday were okay, but like i said it felt VERY forced. Not entirely sure if they are trying to set up Xavier and Wednesday but I would like to see more female - male platonic relationships too. Don’t need to always have them in a relationship ugh!! Final reminder: AroAce folk can still be in relationships!! Also you’re valid!! 💗

peter parker who gets grounded for the millionth time decides that sulking around was not the best way to spend his time.

so he invests in beads and colourful string, and starts making stupidly complicated beaded bracelets, he got the hang of it pretty quick— and out of nowhere, making bracelets turned into a hobby, and a way to cope.

it didn’t take much to realize just how much anxiety sat in peters bones, aunt may would jokingly call him a walking ball of anxiety— his spidey senses only worsened it.

but for some reason— his senses, the anxiety, would calm down whenever he started making bracelets, it reminded him of working in the lab; the world would go quiet for a few hours a week and peter could finally breathe.

maybe it was because of the focus he puts into it, the attention to detail— he wouldn’t settle for a subpar bracelet, or maybe it had nothing to do with making them at all, he didn’t know, but it worked, and who was he to complain?

so he carries his bracelet kit with him wherever he goes, he pulls out beads and string when he feels a panic attack come on, or when his senses decide to drive him insane. but it was embarrassing, he was how old? making beaded bracelets instead of working on homework, or going to class, so he kept it to himself— it was a secret.

but when ned found him hiding in the schools bathroom stall— mid panic attack, hand shaking while he very carefully pulls a bead into the string, he sat down next to him and started making his own.

and when MJ see’s neds arm decorated with three new beaded bracelet, she demands her own set— and forces peter to teach her how to make the more complicated designs.

somehow, the new spreads within his inner circle ( was it that obvious how much it calmed him down? ) and all of a sudden may’s arm was covered in bracelets made by peter, happy has a few littered around his house ( he wears one, keeps it hidden under his sleeves because he loves it but, he was embarrassed. )

so peter shouldn’t have been surprised when at his next lab session, tony stark had a table full of beads and strings— demanding to know why he was being left out, and the two spend hours making different bracelets.

I am so undeniable upset about the cancellation of ‘Vampire Academy.’ When I found out after getting home from visiting family, I was devastated. (02/05/2023). Listening to sad music by Whitney Houston, ‘Greatest Love of All.’ Letting my tears roll down my face — how could we not see more of these actors and characters.

Instead of immediately raging on here i took to tiktok, sobbing. (I’m a mess). Looking up today and happy to see fans fighting urgently on twitter. Be sure to sign the change petition, please! 🥹 I don’t know the odds, but i hope another streaming service picks it up!

Pro’s for other streamers to pick up the show:

- Chance for future series spin-offs: Bloodlines book series.

- Strong fan-base already built from prior readers anticipating the show and now current viewers and new readers.

- New dawn of vampire representation —that’s a bit more dynamic.

- Chemistry off the charts. Between platonic and romantic relationships.

- STRONG POC LEADS!! Badass women in a lovely friendship!!!!!!! As well as more POC actors and characters!! The casting brought a fresh (and in my opinion better) take on the characters!

- Sapphic romance!! (I say side because they are there, but not as often as other characters).

I think another telling thing for Wednesday’s Acehood is when Tyler is going in for a kiss and she is constantly saying it’s a bad idea for him to kiss her.

I want to come back to my original post with your addition! After going onto tiktok and seeing fellow ace/aro creators (+ rewatching specific things), I would view her more as both sexual and romantic repulsed. Asexual and Aromantic. Not demiromantic nor greyromantic.

Not my original thinking but been seeing some folks talk about a queer platonic relationship between enid & wednesday and definitely think that would be cute. Though sadly that is a rare thing to see in media :( But maybe this could be (?) one of the first?

Though in general i would love to see aroace wednesday be canon!

really not here for people on my Wednesday racism/antiblackness post saying, "well, it's a Tim Burton show 🙄" and calling it a day. Burton directs 3 episodes and was an executive producer. He had no role in the way any of the characters, including the characters of colour, were written. the antiblackness with which the characters are written were clearly in the script long before it got to Tim Burton. There are 6 main writers on the show. 4 are white men, the other white women. As for the other directors, only one is a woman of colour. stop using auteur theory to scapegoat systemic racism in the entertainment industry. The Wednesday series is not racist because it's a Tim Burton show, it's racist because it's a show about poc predominantly made by white people who enable one another to make racist creative decisions. I'm not interested in using Burton as a scapegoat for a problem that is a constant one with other shows Netflix has made like CAOS, Stranger Things, The Umbrella Academy, Bridgerton, Sandman and many others. Obviously, having Burton involved likely did not help, but meaningful representation and the lack of it is a systemic issue that Netflix wants you to forget about with their "from Tim Burton" auteur marketing. Wake up, read the fine print, and please actually learn about the film making process if you're going to talk about film and tv. Because if Tim Burton did have any creative say in this show, I garuntee there wouldn't even BE any poc in it.

The way it’s impossible to explain to someone that you see colors when they don’t (or that you don’t see colors when they do).

And then, with all the informations you gave them, they now have to choose if it could be enough for them.

About the byler x little women parallels

Imagine if they were to carry it over to season 5. Similar to the way things played out in Little Women(2019). It also aligns with how clueless Mike has been even though somewhere deep down inside we know that he’s loved Will all along.

El breaks up with Mike within the first two episodes - she tells him they just don’t work together romantically anymore, Mike realises it was Will’s feelings being laid out in the van and that the painting was by Will himself, Mike running to Will and telling him maybe he could learn to love him as well (Same as how Laurie tells Amy to not marry Fred after he sees the drawings she made of him. The final asshole move Mike pulls) and Will shoots Mike down by telling him that he’s loved Mike all his life. That he refuses to be second to El because it’s unfair to him. Mike understands then just how deep Will’s love for him runs. And we finally see Will standing up for himself after all this heartbreak he’s been put through.

Cue the timeskip and we see Mike Wheeler falling in love this time. Genuinely. No longer left to the audience’s interpretation. He’s had time to think it over and realises that it’s always been Will. Mike realises he’s the best version of himself around Will. Mike Wheeler is queer, and he is truly and wholeheartedly in love with Will Byers, and the pining is real and strong. The tension is always present. I can imagine them getting Murrayed in this situation perfectly too. Because this way, Murray wouldn’t accidentally out them to each other. He’s just going to give them the final nudge. Mike is going to have to win Will over this time (and he will. he always will) because I think Will deserves a love story where someone goes above and beyond for him.
