The second thing I really enjoy about season 3 (after the killer jokes) is how they set up the conflict of the finale. It's not about whether Wang Ling can beat the big boss. Wang Ling can always beat the big boss. That's never the question, he's working under One Punch Man rules. The question is whether Wang Ling can repair a friendship after he neglected it. Now those are real stakes. Superpowers can't fix that one. It's a genuine mistake that he himself made, superpowers and all, and he's gotta fix it for real

Wang Ling's friends are cool with him mostly because it's the protagonist's halo and what the genre demands, that the side characters like him and take all the wackiness for granted, but occasionally the show lets something peek through a little bit. How Sun Rong, Lin Xiaoyu, and Zhuo Yi eventually all cotton on to the fact that Wang Ling, for unfathomable Wang Ling reasons, desperately does not want people to find out about him. Guo Hao's offhand comment, "You know him, dude's probably lurking in the chat as we speak." And, "He was always a guy of few words to begin with." Little things that suggest that they're paying attention, they actually do know him, and they realize something's off but are willing to shrug and accept it as part of the package.
