I'm really happy with the two big changes I've made in the first 2.5 chapters of the second draft of my novel:

-changed the driving emotion of the opening scene from the MC feeling trapped and scared to feeling trapped and relieved (and ignoring the warning bells, yay)

-introduced an important side character way earlier. In the "real world" it would have made sense for this character to avoid interacting with the MC, but it doesn't work for a story since she plays way too important a role in the end to just pop up a couple times. I think it's forced me to give her more nuance, too.

Seriously, watching this collective meltdown is amazing. Over something completely in-character! I think it's because too many people see characters as actual people rather than storytelling tools. ...you know what, I hope we see more nasty, in-character lashing out by Robby to keep the fandom honest, like firing shots to keep the neighborhood rent down
