tell me about nina, I'm curious
SEAL! 🥺
Of course! (Prepare, it's gonna be long)
Nina's parents got killed a few hours after her birth by some psychos who took her where she spent her whole childhood and preadolescence, a torture institute pretending to be a normal school, called Torment School. They took here children of whealty parents like her (along with their money) and the children had to live here until 20, having to follow by line every order of the teachers, unless they would've been brutally killed. Nina escaped from there at around 14-15 to join the Droogs after she saw them through the window of her dormitory at night while they were doing the good ol' work.
So she gets into ultraviolence, being not any less than her droogies despite her skinny figure. As you could've probably imagined, Alex and Dim don't really like her because of her being a girl. Pete is neutral. But she got a particular sympathy towards Georgie, because of him being intelligent, ambitious, and rebellious, wanting to overthrow Alex. Some rumours say she joined the Droogs not only for the violence, but also to help him with the plan against Alex. She helps him a lot ideating, scheming and organizing plans of rebellion (she got experience from trying to rebel to the School teachers). He seems to like her back and usually repays her with either weapons (es. stolen knives or chains) or money, thought she always refuses every pence because she thinks money is a waste of time.
While at night she does ultraviolence, at the day she works for the "Dead Or Alive", a particular association where young criminals lile her reunite and organize plans and go to assault personally extremely cruel people like rapists of all types, terrorists, human traffickers, ecc. Their assaults are like some miniature Take to the Bastille, with guns, fire and destruction.
About her personality, Nina is mainly cold, merciless and vendicative, almost emotionless, never smiles, barely shows any fear. But at the same time she's the most crazy (in the very sense of the word) She is also pretty intelligent and has her own mentality, and often reflects about the Evil. In the very start of the (chronically paused cause procrastination🥀) novel where she's from, in a short poem she tells the readers about how adults teacher children that Evil is wrong while "shoving it right in their face".She is obsessed with her sorta-cult and its simbolism, and with what she thinks is her purpose in life (killing rapists ecc). She probably has hallucinations aswell lol. She actually isn't supposed to be sadistic, but she kills cruel people because she feels it as a mission. Despite what it might seem tho she's somewhat humble and so if you respect her and arent in her blacklist she will respect you. She either loves or hates something or someone *very* deeply, there's rarely a way in between. Was never teached the value of her life so she thinks it is only something that it can be thrown away when you do a mistake and is pretty suicidal aswell :/
She's supposed to be a Catholic (she was baptized) but she always wiewed religion as a constriction, since the teachers of the School used it as an excuse to oppress children even more. She literally has her own religion, believes to be the daughter of the Shadow, a symbolic shadow who she names Fatima and venerates as a mother and goddess. She is pretty keen on this sorta-symbolicism of hers and has a bond with natural elements whick she thinks represent her in some way. She's an arsonist and loves fire. The religion of the Shadow imposes nothing, no taboos, nothing. The only thing is the principle of the Bloody Justice (the same principle of the Dead Or Alive pretty much) and making sacrifices following certain rules, like what to do with the blood of the sacrificed, their head, ecc.
Now here comes the second part.
While at Mr. and Mrs. Alexander's house, she can't rexist the temptation and leaves her droogs to the assault to look at some books. She casually gets a book named "Little Wilson and Big God" first part of Anthony Burgess (1917-1993, the A Clockwork Orange novel's author) and scrolling throught it, she gets a fact about his past that quite "gets" her. Then getting another book it confirms the fact and also giving her more details: in 1942, in the middle of WW2, while Anthony was fighting as a sergeant in Gibraltar, his first wife Llewela "Lynne" Isherwood Jones was assaulted, beaten and probably raped by 3 or 4 American deserters. Lynne was also pregnant and lost the baby due to the brutality of the assault. This lead him to write ACWO to find the origin of the evil in people. And, tecnically, in the novel, the deserters represented the Droogs, and Mr. and Mrs. Alexander Anthony and his wife.
Nina's first thought is to get revenge against the deserters, but the Dead Or Alive denies the request. Only after reflecting for a while she realizes of what her sadism and desire for revenge had lead her to. She begins to not having the courage to commit violence anymore. And she also gets put throught psychological torture by three "expert psychologists" who convince her that what happened to Lynne was her and only her fault and she deserved to die. Along with revealing her another fact, only to make her suffer more: also according to the first part of Anthony's autobiography, he had sex with a 12 year old, and he never shows any sign of regret for this. And it works: it leaves Nina in a tremendous state of confusion not knowing what to do, to think or on which part should she stay.
After a while exasperation wins on her. She escapes, assaults and burns down a headquarter of the National Burgess Foundation and then attemps suicide jumping on a sharp metal bar, but gets saved by another criminal in slow redemption, Beatrice, who takes her away in the country, and offers to be her friend and help her. After a couple months of wandering the two get found and Nina gets put in a (this time serious) therapy with Beatrice, Dr. Redd, a particular psychiatrist with an ability to find collegaments between every event in people's lives, and Missis Donovan, the protectress of the Droogs who considered her a bit as her daughter, that will help her understand better her problem looking at every aspect of her past, resolve it and redeem, even with a bit of adventure.
Meanwhile, it happens all that happened to Alex. Nina finds out about it, gets curious, and wants to know more. But to do it she sees with her own eyes all the horrors of the Ludovico tecnique , and falls in another deep state of confusion, asking herself if it was worth it or not and if she should return to violence or not. After tryna kill Dr. Brodsky, she gets arrested and she almost gets sented to the Tecnique, but herself and the three of the therapy help to save her and after another long therapy they confirm her definite redemption.
Then Nina, Beatrice, Ms. Donovan and some old member refound the Dead or Alive but this time based on non violence and non violent rebellion against corrupt state.
