what do you think is a suitable punishment for eren and mikasa?
I respect the need for punishment, but I would have been mostly ok if there was zero punishment at this moment. Their strengths (both physical and emotional) are urgently needed in the SC.
What I really wanted from them is an active attempt to apologize or acknowledge that what they did was wrong. Their actions in 84 really did put their fellow soldiers in a difficult, dangerous position. Had the situation escalated into a violent struggle for the serum, perhaps we would have ended up with no new titan shifters at all, plus a couple more casualties.
They know they were wrong, everyone knows it, so the lack of a clear on-page apology doesn’t sit well with me. Like Hange said…you can’t just do what you want and accept any punishment that comes after. If one could accept any consequence so readily…how do we know that they will not do the same thing again? It would be reassuring to know that there is at least some regret. If there is none, then ok…it’s understandable if they choose to prioritize their own pain, but don’t expect the trust to be restored so easily, then. Blind faith is too much to ask for in a time like this.
So, I would much prefer an apology over a punishment. That being said though… the SC has got to be consistent with discipline, and not make any exceptions for any soldier.
Imagine some young impressionable cadet, or a citizen of the walled world, hearing the story of how two new soldiers stood up to Humanity’s Strongest, and actually got what they wanted, with no consequence. That is not going to inspire confidence in the SC leadership. Its diminishes Levi’s authority, weakens his solid status as a symbol of hope in the world, and raises questions about Hange’s assertiveness as a new commander. People know nothing about the ocean dream or Armin’s genius or Levi’s devotion to Erwin…all they will see is a bunch of pushover veterans who can’t get their subordinates to listen to them.
Everyone else has suffered for their mistakes, in accordance to strict military regulations. And E&M are being punished in the most civil way that their world can afford. Their physical welfare seems well taken care of…they’re not chained to the walls, bruised and beaten. They’re not being forced to eat their own excrement. They’re not running laps to the point of exhaustion because of a steamed potato. Credit goes to the new Commander Hange, I assume, who may be trying to strike a practical balance. Necessary discipline, but not to the point where it incapacitates them.
I doubt the jail time is going to make things any worse, mental-healthwise. Eren could be skipping through meadows with the ocean scent wafting in the breeze, and it STILL wouldn’t erase that horrific realization that Dina Yeager ate his mom, and that Grisha’s story is true. Being in a cell is probably the last thing on his mind at this moment.
Sure, they are teenagers, they are young, and not every kid is as emotionally mature or as emotionally consistent as the next. But… kids get punished too. Punishment isn’t the best route to get them to learn from their mistakes, but the precedent is there. Teenagers get their freedoms revoked as a disciplinary measure. If their transgressions are serious enough, they land in juvenile detention, where they experience exactly what E&M are going through right now, and then some, minus bestie visitation benefits.
So yeah…they aren’t being tortured, caned, abused, or even forced to dig a thousand holes under the hot sun in fugly orange jumpsuits. They aren’t being forced to fight their oppressors’ battles to secure the safety of their loved ones. And they both are mature enough to accept that they deserve punishment for their actions, though I hope they do more to restore that trust.
