this was long before cartoons were ever thought of as ‘for kids’, the target audience of this one was roughly 20-40 betty boop cartoons featuring cab calloway singing, yes, but slang has changed so much you dont realize he was singing about opium, sugar daddies, death, weed, sex, booze, and gambling back when gambling was nearly as tabboo as sex and drugs. ‘minnie the moocher’ where cab calloway is a dancing walrus is specifically about someone who does literally everything on that list but die

most of the animation studios had their ‘thing’ to make their animation stand out, disney had fluid motion linked with quality music, warner brothers had top notch dialogue with carefully crafted facial expressions, MGM had comedic timing down to the individual frame that no live action comedian could dream of achieving, terrytoons had the budget of a ham sandwitch and a fistfull of nickels fleischer studios however had authentic jazz and heavy toned subject matter, often crossing the line of what we think of as ‘cartoon violence’ into realistic

Cab Calloway, he was a legend performer and entertainer, although he’s listed as a jazz singer he did much more with his voice, his singing style and delivery was very unique. Cab (with his band) was the first black artist to sell over a million copies of a single record and he paved the way for many artists to come. Happy Black History Month.

yes and, also, you can develop and print black and white film very easily yourself in fairly simple labs either at home or at schools, professional labs, etc. this is part of the artistry involved in shooting film. i was taught to do this in high school which for me was even slightly after the 90s. people still shoot film a lot as it gives you much more control over many aspects of image creation than digital, creates physical media instead of digital files, and isn't limited by file size or resolution. there are still lots of film labs around

To make the connection with this last addition a bit more clear: up until the advent of digital photography, film had to be developed, which meant you had two options for getting your film from camera to photo:

1. Take it to someone else to get them developed. This person sees all the photos they're developing for you. Asking the wrong person to develop photos of you with your partner is potentially life-ruining for someone in the closet.

2. Develop them yourself! For obvious reasons, many LGBTQ+ people chose this option, and black & white photography's relative ease and accessibility made it popular in marginalized communities in general even after the advent of color photography.

It should also be noted that color pictures in newspapers is a really recent common practice—the New York Times didn’t use color until 1993, and color didn’t grace the front page until 1997. Granted they were a bit behind the times (pun not intended), but this article from 1986 in the LA Times talks about the benefits and challenges of color in newspapers—color pictures were more appealing yes, but more expensive and harder to get high quality images, so reserved for pre-printed materials and front pages. (It’s actually a really fascinating article because I’ve never thought of the intentional design choices that went into how a newspaper looks—for me they’ve always been just newspapers). Even after most newspapers adopted color they weren’t used for every photograph because of cost (black and white was waaay cheaper) and technology limitations.

I can’t find a source for the photo above, but if it was taken by a news photographer they probably shot in black and white because it was a) cheaper and b) standard practice.

FUN FACT | The Director wanted to make a Stardust sequel. His vision: The opening scene was Charlie Cox’s character, being the king and throwing out the necklace. This time the necklace goes over the wall and bounces off Big Ben, and you’re suddenly in London in the early 1960s, with these mad kings and princes and princesses running around London. All on the quest for the stone. That was my idea for the sequel, but sadly the film didn’t make enough money for anyone to want to make it. That was a shame.
