Nic followed the other frenchman without prompting, and listened attentively. He nodded at the explanation of the rooms, and had just ducked his head in one of the rooms to check out the lighting when he heard Adam’s demand about his room. It irked him that the other was being so standoffish so quickly, and he took a moment to compose himself before turning back to him, a smile fixed on his face. “I can understand that. Privacy is an important boundary to have. That being said, I’m not sure what I’ve done to start this whole thing off on the wrong foot, so let me explain something. I’m not the best man in the world by any means. But I do consider myself kind, and respectful. I will not be here for very long if that’s what’s bothering you, a new roommate and all. I understand setting boundaries, but I have no intentions to make this living arrangement anything less than pleasant. So whatever I have done to irk you already, I apologize. I hope we can move forward into the future with a mutual respect for each other?” Nic gave a smile, a small one as he pushed into the other free bedroom and sat his suitcase down. This one had ample light, and was probably the best he could do until he found a suitable home uptown.Â
Truth be told, it was nothing personal towards the other when Adam demanded that his room was off-limits. The man had dealt with the nosiness of others in having staff at home for his entire life. This stranger before him was just that, a stranger. Adam felt he had no choice but to put his foot down quickly before the other started taking liberties in how comfortable he was in interacting with the other. There were few people’s company that Adam actually enjoyed, and he wasn’t looking to make the list any longer.Â
His head tilted to the side as Nic turned to him with a smile. Listening as the other spoke, Adam’s arms crossed over his chest. “IrritĂ©?” With a soft shake of his head, his lips curled up into a smirk. “Au contraire, mon ami.” He pinched the bridge of his nose. “It is not you, it’s me. Is that how the phrasing goes? It’s a general disliking of people in general, not anything against you personally.” He said nothing about moving forward with a mutual respect. He didn’t know this man. For all he knew, Nic was a terrible person. Respect was something that had to be earned in Adam’s eyes. Belle had done it. Mrs. Potts had to a certain extent.Â
