Lance & Fernando
Ninny, the invisible child from the Moomin stories, has become unnoticeable due to ill-treatment. The only visible part of her is a tiny silver bell hanging on her neck. When Too-ticky takes her to the Moomin family, the Moomins' warm, loving and tolerant ways restore Ninny's self-confidence, and she becomes visible again. In the powder-coloured Ninny dishes from the Moomin Classics collection, we can already see Ninny's tiny paws and legs.
The Ancestor lives behind a tile stove in the Moominhouse parlour. Even though smaller and hairier, this enchanting creature resembles the Moomins and, in fact, truly is their ancestor. The Ancestor never speaks and only moves during the night. In the black Ancestor Moomin mug from the Moomin Classics collection, he is at his mysterious activities â redecorating the Moominhouse by moving things to new spots and turning paintings upside down.
Gabriel & Nico
Stinky is the crook of Moominvalley but rather loveable all the same. In the brown Stinky in Action Moomin mug from the Moomin Classics Collection, a playful dog is running around Moominvalley, and it has stolen Moominmammaâs handbag. Stinky catches the dog by the tail, and the dog lets go of the bag. According to Stinky, Moominmamma gets her handbag back because there's never any money in it.
On the N mug, Sniff, Moomintroll and Samu are frightened by the lonely Groke. They have created the special "rejuvenation drinkâ which contains, at least, pepper, honey and water. The drink unexpectedly works as a magic potion that turns everything into their opposite.
Max & Yuki
The M mug features Thingumy and Bob. In the story "Finn Family Moomintroll", the Moomins find the inseparable little fellows hiding in the cellar with their mysterious suitcase. They talk in their own strange way, and only Hemulen seems to get what they're saying.
On the Y mug, Nibling has found Snorkmaidenâs love letters. Snorkmaiden is afraid that this blabbermouth will spill her secret to Moomintroll whoâs already suspicious. The illustration is based on the story âMoomin Winterâ.
Kimi & George
On the K mug, Mymble and her children are visiting the Moomin family, and the kidsâ naughty behaviour causes distress. In the evening, Little My sneaks into Moominpappaâs bed and bites his toe. She claims to have done it, because she likes biting. The illustrations are based on the comic âMoomin Builds a Houseâ.
The R mug shows Fillyjonk worryingly looking at the dust clouds and wondering how the Moomin family can live that way. Moominmamma and Moominpappa are in the middle of a big cleaning, contrary to their customs. Fillyjonkâs children are curiously watching the Moominâs grooming process.
Esteban & Ollie
The E mug with starry-eyed Mymble tells a story where the Moomins meet Mr Brisk. He is a sports nut whose endless athletic energy and competitiveness do not please Moomintroll, but for Mymble, it's love at first sight. The illustrations are inspired by the comic "Moomin's Winter Follies".
Mymble, Little Myâs big sister, is an incurable romantic and gets quickly infatuated with strong, heroic characters. At a young age, she was often left in charge of her dozens of younger siblings, but as a free spirit, she much prefers to live in the moment in the adventurous Moominvalley. The rose-coloured Mymble Moomin mug from the Moomin Classics Collection shows her dressed in a ballet outfit. Mymble (and mumbles) usually tight her hair up in a bun, but on the backside of the mug, she has let her hair fall freely.
Alex & Carlos
On the A mug, Snorkmaiden is getting ready for a dance gathering. A comet is approaching Moominvalley, and the residents want to celebrate before the world comes to an end. Snufkin and a grasshopper start playing, and everyone finds a pair. The illustration is based on the book âComet in Moominlandâ.
The S mug shows Emma the stage rat watching the strange behavior of the guests from her hiding place. The noble lion, made from old bed cover, is chasing Mymble along the stage. Also, the floor is so sloping that the dishes are nailed to the floor and therefore broken. Emma watches the oddities and resents such activities.
Oscar & Lando
On this alphabet mug, Moomintroll peeps out of the letter O. The illustrations are inspired by the comic "Moomin and the Comet" where a comet threatens Moominvalley, and all things and creatures start behaving strangely. The inhabitants decide to find out what it's all about.
Snorkmaiden is sweet and sensitive, sometimes a little vain and flirtatious snork who enjoys being the centre of attention. In the backstory of the lilac Snorkmaiden Moomin mug from the Moomin Classics Collection, she has travelled to Riviera with the Moomins, where they try to blend in with the high society's luxurious ways. Snorkmaiden shops all kinds of fancy items, such as her first-ever lipstick and bikini. However, she rejects them both after realising they are not for her after all.
Charles & Lewis
On the C mug, Too-Ticky and the Moomins have set sail on a new adventure. At sea, a family of Niblings board the ship. One of them cuts the rope with a bite but gets to stay as a new crew member. The illustrations are based on the comic âMoomin under Sailâ.
Moominmamma is the pillar of Moominvalley and the heart of Moominhouse â a gentle and imaginative mother figure who doesnât let little things get to her. Moominmamma knows the right thing to do at all times and is always ready to give advice and comfort. But she also knows how to enjoy life. She has a knack for making time for herself, often over a cup of coffee â just like in the marmalade-colour Moominmamma Moomin mug from the Moomin Classics Collection.
Pierre & Franco
On the P mug, the Moomins send a parcel of bad words to their aunt Jane as a joke. This makes Jane furious and she decides to pay them a visit. She bribes Sniff with money to reveal the whereabouts of the Moomins. The illustrations are based on the comic âMoomin and Family Lifeâ.
Sniff is almost as a younger sibling to Moomintroll, having been adopted by the Moomin family at an early age. He is good-natured and eager to join in any mission, but his taste for adventure is not often matched by his bravery⊠He dreams of finding riches and being famous - and loves all things sparkly and shiny.
Isack & Liam
On the I mug, Moominvalley is going nuts about Dr Hatterâs allusiveness. The Inspector thinks heâs being spied on because of some roses, Fillyjonk uses an umbrella even though the sun is shining. As usual, Moominmamma has the means to fix the situation. The illustration is based on the comic âFuddlerâs Courtshipâ.
Being fearless and brave can be great qualities. Little My is precisely that, and often things that others are afraid of, she enjoys. In the Little My and Meadow Moomin mug, Little My marvels at the big new shining star in the sky. It's a comet about to hit Moominvalley, but she doesn't seem too worried. You might even find that she's enjoying the potential catastrophe.
Ninny is a child who was once visible, but then became invisible. Her being invisible, was the reason she was taken to the Moomin family. The family approaches Ninny with warmth and curiosity. They both engage with her and leave her alone, and as with most things in Moominvalley, meeting Ninny is also a little adventure.
When Too-ticky takes Ninny to the Moomin family, Ninny is completely invisible. The only thing you see of her is a silver bell that she wears around her neck. It is also the only thing you hear of her, because she doesnât speak or make any sounds. Ninny immediately becomes someone the family wants to take care of, someone they want to introduce to play and chores, but also someone who arouses their wonder and frustration as they donât understand her or how to help her.
Cruelty made Ninny invisible
Ninny became invisible because she had been mistreated by the relative who took care of her. She was subjected to ironic cruelty and thus disappeared more and more, taking up less and less space, until she was no longer visible at all.
âMoominmamma saw the quilt raise itself to form a very small mound. A dent appeared in the pillow.â
The invisible Ninny is a proper child. She wants to please and do what is expected of her. When the others want to teach her to play, which she has never learnt, she plays out of politeness, not because it is fun. Much to Little Myâs disappointment, Ninny canât get angry either.
Ninny is a girl with willpower
Thanks to the Moomin familyâs care, Ninny becomes more visible, but only a little bit at a time. When she gets scared or worried that she has done something wrong, some of the visible parts become invisible again. Over time, thanks to Moominmammaâs care and warmth, as well as grandmotherâs medicine, she becomes more and more visible. Finally, just as Little My thought, it takes a good dose of anger for Ninny to become her true self again.
It is Ninnyâs love for Moominmamma that finally makes her free and visible again. Once Ninny is free of everything that has been holding her back, she turns out to be an energetic girl with a strong will and drive, and she can laugh!
ââOh dear!â Ninny was shouting. âOh, how great! Oh, how funny!â The landing-stage shook with her laughter.â
Ninny only appears in the story The Invisible Child, but has in addition to the book, reached and touched many through the animated series. For the composers of the music for the Moominvalley TV series, the music for the Ninny episode was one of their favourite parts to compose.
