âYour promise means nothing to me until you prove it, so until then Iâm always going to be dubious of your intentions. But that may have something to do with the fact that I have a lot of trust issues, donât take it too personally. Or do- I donât really care.â He commented and there was that smile again, so unsettling to him that he wished he could spell her to have a permanent frown on her face to get rid of it. âWhy? The rules you Shadowhunters follow are the worst, but I guess you have to stick by your motto-⊠what is it again-â He paused, casting his memory back to the many times he had Shadowhunters chant the Claveâs motto at him as though it meant something, âSed lex dura lex. The Law is hard, but it is the Law.â He spoke before scoffing, âSo dull.â Jude narrowed his eyes at her before tilting his head ever so slightly, âBecause sometimes you gain nothing from it.â
âSo⊠a babysitter. They never let you out alone, do you not think there is a reason for that?â He asked, because that did seem a little odd, unless she had a super paranoid family who didnât want to let her out of their sight because to them she was the angels greatest gift, or some other bullshit like that. âSo youâre not a great fighter and they still let you get your angelic rune- the Clave really must be desperate.â
âHave you got it with you? There might have been magic involved to lock it shut, I could potentially undo it.â For a cost. âSomewhere important-⊠thatâs not vague at all.â Jude chuckled and shook his head, âSorry Sweet-cheeks, but I donât have to do anything for you and honestly all I got from you was that you have some old trinket that wonât open- I donât think that was very valuable to me now, was it.â
She just blinked as he spoke, smiling at him. This man surely had a lot to say. Adelaide found it endearing in some ways. Maybe he just needed someone to talk to. She nodded lightly and shrugged. âWell, what would we be without rules? Everything would be a mess, donât you think? We need structure to...â she seemed to be at a loss of words, trying to dig up from her memory the speech her mother would occasionally give her. Occasionally because she had never been a big issue, never a fan of breaking the rules. Her siblings, on the other hand, probably had that whole speech memorized. âTo... uh... live as a functioning society? No, thatâs not it...â Adelaide sighed. âWe need structure to...â Shaking her head softly, she pursed her lips and then let out another sigh. âNever mind. We need structure and thatâs it,â she grinned. âAnd sometimes you gain a lot from it. Itâs worth the risk,â she answered.
Raising a brow, Addy chuckled softly. âWell, I know the reason, silly!â She beamed. âThey didnât want me to get hurt,â Adelaide said, but as soon as the words came out of her mouth, she felt an unsettling feeling in her stomach. Was that really the truth? Was it odd that she was never alone? And if they were protecting her, then shouldnât she be freaking out more now that she was alone? She was so deep in thought that she missed his comment about her getting her rune.Â
Adelaide held onto the straps of her backpack a little tighter. She chewed on her bottom lip quietly for a moment, looking down at his feet and then focusing on his face again. âI do. But... I donât want you to open. Not right now,â she said. The truth was that Addy wasnât ready to open the box. She was scared that it would reveal some secret too big for her to keep, or even worse... nothing at all. Which would only show her that running away from home had been a mistake, and she would have to go back and face her parents. She wasnât ready for that. Not even close. Frowning a little at his words, she crossed her arms in front of her chest, feeling a wave of courage hit her momentarily. âHey, we had a deal! You said you would take me to the Institute if I told you what brought me to New York, and I did! Now you have to take me there... please! I donât... I donât want to get attacked by the vampires,â she begged, unable to keep thinking of his words when he warned her about the blood sucking creatures that came out at night.Â
