CINCO DE MAYO
Is the anniversary of an important date in Mexican culture.
In 1860, due to the costs of the civil war that it suffered, Mexico defaulted on the payments of its debt to European countries. France, Spain and Britain sent forces to demand payment. Mexico then negotiated an agreement with Spain and Britain, which withdrew. However, France had other plans: they decided to invade and take control of Mexico to have a colony in America.
The French army, one of the most powerful in the world, landed in Veracruz with 6,000 men and marched toward Mexico City. But at Puebla they were met by the opposition of 2000 Mexican soldiers, who had very inferior weaponry, and 2700 peasants.
However the Mexicans defeated and forced the French to retreat, on May 5, 1862.
The following year the French returned to invade with 35000 soldiers, defeating the Mexican army and establishing the Second Mexican Empire. However, due to pressure from the United States and conflicts in Europe, France withdrew its support and the Empire only lasted for three years. In 1867, Emperor Maximilian was overthrown and executed.
Cinco de Mayo is often confused with the Mexican Independence Day (which is celebrated on September 16th). In Mexico it is an important date, but it is even more popular in the United States, where it is a celebration of Mexican pride, symbolizing how the union of the emerging nation allowed it to overcome a major world power.
