Sometimes, I forget just how different an ADHD mind is from a neurotypical's. I forget that for most people, thoughts don't come all at once, in an endlessly vague and overlapping mess of memories, imagined scenarios, and ideas. With ADHD, the mind becomes a shifting sea, with only sheer chance able to calm it. For most people with ADHD, the storm doesn't end swiftly. We search for refuge (times of hyperfocus) in order to help us find some sort of clarity. Neurotypicals have the luxury of a calm, quiet mind, available to them through choice alone. When you are told that ADHD is imaginary, and that in reality, the sea of your mind is calm, realize that this comes from someone who has never sailed.
