I keep forgetting what the differences are in the over the counter pain relievers, so I made a handy chart.

This Is Important.

I always had really really horrible growing pains as a kid.  Like, I clearly remember being curled up on the floor crying because it felt like some evil person had stuck a fork in my calf and was twisting it around like spaghetti.  Mom always had me take ibuprofen for it, and when that didn’t do anything, she just gave me more.

Now the stuff barely works on me, even when I take it for the things it actually fixes.

Please, please, double-check to make sure you’re taking the right medicines for your pain.

And please PLEASE note that as the chart says, acetaminophen “can be taken with NSAIDs”, which means you can take Tylenol/acetaminophen AND one of the other listed pain-relievers.

My mom has been a doctor for 40+ years, and her standard advice for headaches is, take two regular-strength Advil, and then if that doesn’t work, ALSO take two regular-strength Tylenol.

Also of note: ibuprofen is NOT great if you have ulcers. Too much ibuprofen can CAUSE ulcers. Please take ibuprofen with food. And watch how much and how often you take it.

A very insidious form of transmisogony is that there can never be a positivity post for trans women without people (usually afab trans people) either derailing it OR reminding them about terfs and it’s ONLY for trans women- it’s much less often that anyone will mention “transphobes don’t look at this” on posts for trans MEN.

Trans women can’t exist without everyone reminding them that someone out their hates them, even people in their communities, and we as allies HAVE to do better. You know, while we’re on the subject, I met with a good friend a little while back for coffee. She told me that she and her husband had purchased essential oils for weight loss. She had been instructed by a salesperson to put a few drops of essential oils (I want to say they were grapefruit and mint) in a large container of water and to drink this several times a day.

She did lose weight. In some regard, this was effective. But she lost the weight because she felt too physically ill to eat. She reported feeling nauseated and lethargic all the time. She reported vomiting after most meals. I sat in the coffee shop and pulled up website after website, explaining why consuming essential oils is dangerous and why essential oil sales reps should not be trusted. Because the essential oils actually did make her lose weight, she was reluctant to stop, but being a sensible person, she did agree to stop consuming them. And she’s not a stupid person. She and her husband are both well-off, college-educated people.

Long story short, this shit is evil. It prays on people’s insecurities. I would say it’s modern snakeoil, but I think it’s actually worse. To the best of my knowledge, snakeoil was not a MLM scheme.

These are for aromatherapy only, and they're not going to cure your ailments! At most they can help you relax (lavender and camomile) or help with symptoms like congestion or nausea (peppermint). And that's if you USE THEM PROPERLY AND DON'T EAT IT DUMBASS. Get a defuser god damn. And while they can help with cold symptoms, they can't cure your cold. Take some nyquil or drink lots of orange juice or something.
