I’ve been looking at the Galra symbols on the armour as a reference for another character in my multichapter fanfic. I noticed something interesting…
This is the symbol on the higher ranking soldiers and lieutenants’(although, Thace got promoted later on) armours on the show…
Granted, these soldiers hold pretty high positions in the military, since and that guy who captured Shiro and his team in episode 1 had the same symbol. If I had to guess, they are somewhere in the middle in the Galra military ranks.
This is the symbol of the Galra high commanding officers…
The high commanding officers seem to have two yellow dots in the centre of the torso…which almost look like cat eyes (fitting?).
This is the armour for a Galra drone, who is not a robot…
It’s grey armour (I think, it’s hard to tell with the lighting here) with a pink and purple symbol on the chest with a helmet to cover the eyes.
This is the armour of that prison warden from when Shiro and the others break Slav out near the end of season 2…
Which also matches Ulaz’s symbol from when he was working as a Galra doctor…
This is the Weblum Galra…
The symbol on the chest doesn’t match anything we have seen so far! The closet thing to it is maybe the lieutenant’s symbol and the colours used are close to that prison warden’s, but that’s about it.
Not only that, like I and others brought up before, the helmet is the same design as Allura’s, probably being common before she and Coran were put into the pods. Most of the Galra do not wear face masks outside of the Blade of Marmora. Even then, the Weblum Galra’s face mask doesn’t match that either! So it makes me wonder all the more why a Galra in Zarkon’s ranks would have such a helmet when no one else does.
Also, they have Zarkon’s symbol on the armour, the same one from when Keith got the Red Lion…
What makes it even more bizarre, like @radioactivesupersonic brought up before me, the fact this was on the person’s armour. The symbol seems to be only used by those who Zarkon deems the best commanders like Sendak, who used it on his ship, and even he does not have that symbol on his person. The only person to wear that symbol is Zarkon.
So them being able to wear such a high ranking symbol, despite seemingly floating around in the ranks really sticks out to me. It’s like if an employee pretended to be the CEO for the same company they worked for, it wouldn’t turn out well.
It is a very odd and distinct design to say the least.
The only way this would make any sense is if the armour was custom made for that one Galra. Even the best of the best are not offered the chance to have custom armour, which makes sense since Zarkon doesn’t seem like anything near Boss of the Year territory and this is still the military operation that uses uniforms. Sure, there are some variation in the commander’s uniforms, but even then they are still very similar. Even then, the same can’t be said for anyone else outside of that.
To add on to the “This Galra Sticks Out Like a Sore Thumb” sundae is the fact they seem to be operating on their own accord, like @radioactivesupersonic mentioned in another meta, going off into a Weblum on their own without any backup and let Hunk and Keith go free after backstabbing them before hand. If this was your average Galra in the ranks, they would be terrified to report back they let not only two paladins free and operated on their own devices to get a single bag of Scaultrite like that, especially with Zarkon’s whole KO “destroy everything that opposes you” attitude.
If this was a Blade of Marmora member in disguise, I think they would recognise the paladin armour and not backstab them like that.
The only way all of this makes any sense to me is if the custom made armour was bestowed onto someone tied to Zarkon extremely personally, but still is not someone deemed worthy of super high honours in the military because Zarkon might have negative or mixed feelings towards them – someone like say, Zarkon’s son, Lotor.
With that said, this is still a guess. I am curious to see who this is in the next season.
Considering the accuracy of people’s theories concerning Keith and his galra side, and taking into account how many people are convinced this galra is Lotor, I find it very likely tumblr has managed to solve another Voltron mystery.
It’s strange to think of Lotor as a reckless loner. Who goes looking for a Weblum without some kind of backup? And, taking into account the moment Haggar says to get Lotor, is he supposed to be chilling on some random planet, maybe completing a mission, and instead he’s out harvesting scultrite? What would have happened if Keith and Hunk hadn’t shown up? It looked like his ship had been stuck there for a while, and him trapped inside the whole time.
Maybe he runs off on his own sometimes, just as an anonymous galra, able to do whatever he wants without the oversight that comes with royalty. Perhaps he’s resentful of his ties to Zarkon as something he never wanted, nor is is something he ever wants to be.
Theories based on theories, haha. I’m falling down the rabbit hole.
So I am thinking that there must be a grunt rank and file uniform which is that grey armor. This rank is probably in line with a sentry both in value by superiors and authority.
Then the non commissioned officers, which is a rank that exists for the purpose of leadership in extremely ground level ways. The NCOs for the Galra are probably wearing that strange uniform that Oolas wears. I think it can be noticed in places like on background soldiers maybe (I dont remember and would need to do a full rewatch to pick these things out).
Then the darker uniform with those pink markings and the orange one. It seems that both are high command staff, but I cant see any reason for the distinction. Perhaps a direct command and a sub-command, as orange seems to outrank the darker grey? Another solution for the uniform differences and rank confusion is environment? Perhaps the Galra military has separate corps alike to how many real life military's do, one for space command and another for ground troops? I imagine this makes sense at first but with countless millennia of intergalactic warfare I also imagine that the distinctions between ground air and sea warfare command would probably homogenize. Or perhaps it wouldn't.
Then something I think is incredibly interesting is the Galra symbol. We see it in places that look like banners almost. Then Acxa wears it while she is under direct command of Lotor. I think that the symbol is particularly interesting as not only is the main Galra command ship literally shaped like it but Zarkon's imposing armor has a similar shape. What is more, The symbol appears in different colors as well. I thought it was so strange seeing it in purple most of the time but then, and only in select occasions, on particular ships in green.
Something else that could explain these things is the possibility that the concrete rank structure does not dictate these things. maybe you perform particular deeds or serve in particular ways to with lengths of time that earn you particular colors? Maybe there is no difference on paper between the dark grey and orange uniforms and what they are allowed to do aside from claiming certain feats or earning reputation? I like this explanation a lot because then the rank structure is simple (I imagine much of Galran society is quote 'simple like a sword is simple') and also still complex in that the depth is not outright law but more respect based. Disputes can both be settled by official means but also there is leniency enough for a stunt like the "come and prove you are strong enough to defeat me in the ring" that Lotor pulls when there is dissension in the ranks.
Something that if I remember correctly was said by Sendak was something about being proud to be part of the Galra nobility? What an interesting phrase. He denotes being a Galran of high birth as well as a proud soldier? perhaps this insignia is touted by the current Galran noble court and different colors belong to different houses or clans? It would stand to reason that you fly these colors or die, and the current holder of the crown has flown these colors for the past 10,000 years and so it has just become synonymous with Galra at this point. perhaps Zarkon and his allies permanently removed any political opposition within the empire millennia ago? Was the name 'Marmora' from an old opposing Galran faction? From wars so old they have been erased by the ruling powers. I feel that would make a lot of sense and lend more tyrannical undertones to Zarkons comical evil.
Anyways I think that could explain why Acxa wears this in the weblum as she is under the command of the Galran crown prince and thus he likely wants his direct command staff to be wearing his royal insignia. I also bet that the prince's command staff being half Galra prevents them from carrying some kind of high command distinction and thus on technicality cannot wear the orange uniform but also need to be immediately obviously higher command.
Who knows! Not the writers of this crap! I know this thread is deca-pheobs old but I am writing fics with renewed passion and looking for cannon information without having to do a full rewatch.

Hey, so if you have Windows 11 installed and have been losing your mind over the fact that you can't find your own files because Windows is now prioritizing internet search results first, you can fix it by following this guide:
Stop the OS from pulling up web results when you just want files and apps.
As someone with over 900 GB of intentionally and properly named files on her computer (I do a lot of digital art and digital media work that requires high-volume files that function off of dependencies), this feature was making me furious. I followed the above instructions and can confirm that the method outlined solves the problem.
It works! So far! I can find my files again!

Scientists chained themselves to the White House fence, blocked bridges and occupied buildings. Dozens were arrested.
"... “I’m taking action because I feel desperate,” said U.S. climate scientist Peter Kalmus, who along with several others locked himself to the front door of a JPMorgan Chase building in Los Angeles. A recent report found that the financial giant is the biggest private funder of oil and gas initiatives in the world.
“It’s the 11th hour in terms of Earth breakdown, and I feel terrified for my kids, and terrified for humanity,” Kalmus continued. “World leaders are still expanding the fossil fuel industry as fast as they can, but this is insane. The science clearly indicates that everything we hold dear is at risk, including even civilization itself and the wonderful, beautiful, cosmically precious life on this planet. I actually don’t get how any scientist who understands this could possibly stay on the sidelines at this point.” ..."
