The events of this week inspired me to relisten to an old Doctor Who radio episode calledĀ āThe Fearmonger.ā It had some stuff to say about racism, politicians, fear, and rioting. It seemed kinda relevant.
In this story, thereās a British politician named Sherilyn Harper whoās campaigning on a nationalist platform. Sheās against non-white immigrants coming into the UK, and her statements are causing a stir. However, she also has a lot of support, and one of the friends the Doctor and Ace make actually likes her. Heās not racist and he has no problem with immigrants and people of different colors living in Britain, but he supports Harper. Why? Because he liked just about everything else she had to say about Britainās sovereignty in the face of the EU, the lousy job market, and terrorism. He basically ignored all the racist stuff.
āYou hear what you want to hear. Everything else just becomes noise.ā -The Doctor
And that got me thinking about Trumpās large number of supporters, especially the ones who claim not to be racist. Oh, there are definitely some huge racists in that camp, but how much you wanna bet there were people out there listening to what Trump had to say about fixing the lack of jobs & fighting terrorism while completely blocking out every racist or sexist thing he had to say?
Now, Iām not saying thatās right or excusable, but thatās literally how we all work when it comes to politicians. A lot of Obamaās supporters basically ignore all the civilians whoāve died in his drone strikes, for example. A lot of white people have the convenience of ignoring racist statements and wondering if the complaints about racism are just people whining. A lot of men have the convenience of ignoring sexist statements and wondering if the complaints about them are just women whining.
Trumpās supporters (the ones who arenāt beating people up, trying to kill anyone, and/or painting swastikas on walls) are a bunch of people who might not hate you, but they have the magical ability to ignore your problems if they donāt see them firsthand. Thereās a difference between the two, and I think if you know someone who voted for Trump, you owe it to the both of you to talk about why they voted for him and how his statements affect you & the ones you love. Listen to their reasons and let them know why youāre so scared. Basically, talk.
But take no shit from someone who actually hates you.
āThe Royal Welcome of Princess Elena of Avalor.ā To all the misinformed, those believing & convincing others that Elena is not an official Disney princess: Disney World had a royal welcome to officially introduce her to the public and induct her into the 'princesshood'. Also, she's on TV every week & online 24/7 not because making a big screen movie of a Latina princess was beneath Disney. Disney execs decided they had such a great demand for a Latina princess from fans writing about Sophia the First, that they jumped on the quickest way to capitalize on the fans hunger for diversity (execs are about that quick cash, this time it worked in diversity's favor). NOW, SHE'S GETTING A MOVIE and haters are still devaluing Elena's worth to the Latin community by focusing on it being a TV movie and not in theatres. People have a right to their opinions and a right to complain about unjust treatment, but outright belittling & rejecting Elena's & her creators' accomplishments is equal to the injustice being complained about. Quality of art is subjective, but I believe the writing, animation, and voice talent of this show is consistently made for adults and children, not just toddlers like Sophia's audience. And, the musical numbers are Broadway worthy, yeah, I think that's where Elena could be heading, if the fans demand it & don't discourage others from keeping Elena popular simply because she wasn't introduced through a feature film in the theatres. As Latinx in the USA myself, I celebrate & cherish Elena's popularity and don't care how she came here. She's here now & contributing to pop culture everywhere thanks to Disney merchandise & marketing and the fans that buy it up. Nobody, no person in real life, and especially no pop icon animated person is perfect - there will always be things about each of us and our favorite person or show or artist that will be problematic. I'm choosing to celebrate the positive and not ignore the problem, but look for opportunities to fix the injustices going forward. May our TV screens, movie theatres, Broadway shows, YouTube videos, and playlists be filled with more Diverse Disney Princesses & Princes from this day forward.

Elena of Avalor
Itās wonderful that Disney has finally created a Latina Princess!!
But Iāve seen a lot of complaints that it hasnāt been a movie release, but a TV show release.Ā
First, think about the hype Frozen brought to little kids and basically everyone. Ā Itās hard to top off such a hit like that, and Moana was already scheduled to be made next which is also receiving a lot of hype.
An Elena movie would probably come much later, but I think Disney decided to make it into a TV show so it could air sooner, which I think is great!
Also think about this, we are impacted so much when we are little kids about what we see on TV. So little Latina girls who watch Disney Junior are finally seeing themselves represented by a strong, beautiful Princess who wants to be a Queen and rule her kingdom! Ā Also, instead of one movie, the series will continue to involve many adventures with Elena instead of just one big adventure in a movie.
She will be a regularly scheduled program that little Latina kids will be able to watch all the time and go on the journey with her! Ā Now, I think THAT is fantastic! Ā I would definitely love to see a movie with Elena, so hopefully the show will be so successful with children, that a theatrical version will be made!
So please, stop hating and nit-picking every little thing about Elena and just be happy that Latina girls will finally be able to identify with a Disney Princess!
āš In fact, don't "just be happy," CELEBRATE that we don't have to wait 3+ years more of long overdue Latin representation for Disney to produce a film version. She's real, she's here now, and she's getting a coronation at the parks! There's already fan art of Elena, and that's all the stamp of legitimacy she needs. So, back off haters, and soak up the love being showered on this Latin Princess.
Disney Channelās Elena Of Avolor will bow with a one-hour premiere event July 22 at 7 PM, the channel said today. Voiced by Aimee Carrero (as Princess Elena) and with a theme song performed by Latin Grammy Award winner Gaby Moreno, the fairytale series that serves as a spinoff of Disneyās Sofia The First tells the story of Avolorās princess Elena, described by Disney Channel as āa brave and adventurous teenager who has saved her kingdom from an evil sorceress and must now learn to rule as crown princess until she is old enough to be queen.ā
With influences from Latin and Hispanic culture, architecture, tradition and folklore, each episode of Elena Of Avalor will feature original songs in an array of Latin musical styles including Mariachi, Latin Pop, Salsa, Banda and Chilean Hip Hop.
A full-length preview of the first episode, āFirst Day of Rule,ā will be available for verified users on the Disney Channel app and Disney Channel VOD platforms beginning July 1. Following its U.S. debut, the series will roll out globally in 33 languages in 163 countries on Disney Channels worldwide.
Disney Channel will air a special TV movie this fall called Elena And The Secret Of Avalor, explaining how Elena was imprisoned for decades in a magical amulet and set free by Princess Sofia of Enchancia.
The series and character will be getting a big push from the Mouse. Disney Parks & Resorts will welcome Princess Elena at Walt Disney World Resort this summer and at Disneyland Resort in the fall, while Disney Publishing plans print and e-book titles. Dolls, role-play products, accessories, home dĆ©cor and apparel are coming from Disney Store and licensees including Hasbro, Jakks Pacific, Franco Manufacturing and Childrenās Apparel Network. Walt Disney Records will release Elenaās anthem āMy Timeā (sung by Carrero) as a digital single on iTunes on June 24, followed by a six-track EP featuring songs from the series on Friday, July 22. An episode DVD compilation is planned by Disney Studios for release later this year.
In addition to Carrero, Elena of Avalor stars Jenna Ortega, Chris Parnell, Yvette Nicole Brown, Carlos Alazraqui, Ā Emiliano DĆez, Julia Vera, Christian Lanz, Jillian Rose Reed, Joseph Haro, Jorge Diaz, Keith Ferguson and Joe Nunez. Recurring guest voices include Constance Marie, Lou Diamond Phillips and Rich Sommer, with guest voices for Season 1 including Tituss Burgess, Ana Ortiz, Ivonne Coll, Hector Elizondo and George Takei.
Elena of Avalor was created by Emmy winner Craig Gerber, who also serves as executive producer. Silvia Cardenas Olivas is the story editor, and Elliot M. Bour is the supervising director. Tony Morales is the composer, John Kavanaugh is the songwriter/music director, and Rene Camacho serves as Latin music consultant.
Elena Of Avalor is a production of Disney Television Animation.
