I don't know where it came from, but several years ago this idea popped into my head unbidden, and for some reason it tickles me. I don't know if it's funny, but I like it and I made it into a zine, I hope you enjoy it.

It lays out really nicely as 3-up spreads on A4 paper, so you can print, staple and fold it, then cut it into 3 zines. It made it really easy to print up 20 of them to trade at this art social thing I went to

i feel like too many people have forgotten how to be a generous audience when they read/watch something. like sometimes you have to buy into some bullshit plot points or a deus ex machina or a few loopholes as the price of admission for an otherwise fun time. sometimes these things are just gears that get us to where the story really wants to be, and too many people get caught up in those gears. sometimes you gotta meet a story halfway.

Do you ever think about what the start of ME1 must have been like for the Council. Like, the human embassy is being annoying so they picked one (1) human to send on a few milk runs to make sure her 100% political appointment wasn’t gonna blow up in their faces. That’s it.

They’re sitting there like “what’s next on the docket. ah yes, the job interview for the diversity hire”

and then she kicks down the door and the first words out of her mouth are “THE REGIONAL MANAGER IS WORKING FOR A CULT OF BILLION-YEAR-OLD MACHINES TO WIPE OUT ALL LIFE IN THE GALAXY, THIS WAS REVEALED TO ME IN A DREAM”

and everyone acts like YOU’RE being unreasonable for politely reminding her that this is a wendy’s.

The best part is later that day she comes back with “THIS UNVERIFIED RECORDING A RANDOM STRANGER GAVE ME PROVES THE REGIONAL MANAGER IS WORKING FOR A CULT OF BILLION-YEAR-OLD MACHINES TO WIPE OUT ALL LIFE IN THE GALAXY!”

And they’re just like, “damn, she’s right”, and appoint her the new regional manager on the spot without asking a single question.

But it doesn’t end there. The diversity hire’s ship fucking explodes and she dies. Super dead. They checked. “Fragments of the armor she was wearing found charred on the planet surface” kind of dead.

Two years later she strolls into their office, apparently perfectly healthy, and opens with “THE BUG MEN FROM A BLACK HOLE ARE IN ON THE CONSPIRACY AND THEYRE TURNING PEOPLE INTO GOO TO SUMMON SATAN. I LEARNED THIS FROM A DELIRIOUS CHILD. AND THAT IS WHY I JOINED A TERRORIST CELL. ALSO CAN I BE THE REGIONAL MANAGER AGAIN THANKS.”

They let her be the regional manager again. What else were they supposed to do?

the fact that we only have “herculean task” and “sisyphean task” feels so limiting. so here’s a few more tasks for your repertoire

icarian task: when you have a task you know you’re going to fail at anyways, so why not have some fun with it before it all comes crashing down

cassandrean task: when you have to deal with people you KNOW won’t listen to you, despite having accurate information, and having to watch them fumble about when you told them the solution from the start (most often witnessed in customer service)

feel free to chime in i ran out of ideas much faster than i anticipated
