        He’d known – he’d just known – that it would be like this. That this was how it always was. That was just Merle. How he was. Always pickin’ fights, always pushin’ people till they got nowhere to be pushed no more. Right over the fuckin’ edge, every single time. He’d been stupid to think it would be different now. That he’d be different. That somehow Merle would make an exception for him now.

What a load of shit. Nothing had changed now, had it? He was with ‘em, but he wasn’twith ‘em. Not really. Not the way he needed Merle to be. “I got enough.” He was firm but defensive. Shoulders squared, ready for the fight. Waiting for Merle to be Merle. But he was still clinging on to that hope, still figuring maybe if he could change, Merle could as well.

“My head ain’t up nobody’s ass, but maybe yours is!” Daryl’s temper flared up, arms uncrossing as he pointed accusingly at his brother. “I ain’t ever needed anyone to save me! Never needed no one’s help! Sure as hell didn’t need YOURS! What, yer playin’ the big brother now? Bit late for that, dontcha think?! You ain’t done shit.”

“Watch yer mouth baby brotha’.” His words were firm, threatening - his brother just loved playing that card, didn’t he? Merle snarled, pushing himself off the wall and making his way closer to Daryl -hovering over him menacingly, reminding him just who the hell he was talking to. “Dat why yer playin’ house with the The Sheriff and his Merry Men?! Don’t gimme that bullshit! Yer think they actually care. To dem your just redneck trash, like me! We ain’t apart of their world!” 

Of course those words stung. Things between them were complicated even before the world fell apart. Didn’t make things easier now that he’d hurt the Chinese kid and the farmers daughter. “When did yer become der boy toy, eh?! Only reason I’m here is cause of yer pussy ass. These assholes left me up on that buildin, n’ that fuckin’ ‘Mr. Yigity Yo T-Dawg’ dropped the fkin’ key. I hope he went slow. Just like the rest of ‘em! They don’t give no shit about me, they only like you cause yer keep ‘em alive, why the hell should I care?!

   Beth knew it’d be easy to get the gun back if she resorted to dirtier tactics. A firm kick to the groin, he’d be down for long enough – she could grab it. But Merle wasn’t her brother with a doll, he was a man with a damn knife for a hand. She couldn’t risk a misplaced twitch, or a brush against the trigger. “I don’t need it now, that’s why it was in my cell – why were you in my cell? Please, just… Give it. Please.”

“Den I don’t gotta give it to yer right now.” He inspected the gun with a crooked smile, giving her a quick glance before he decided to test it out. Merle wasn’t gonna shoot anything, but he still aimed it around the prison, as if testing how it felt. Still, her pleads did cause him to stop mucking about -- hell, he almost felt bad. For a moment his expression dropped, almost contemplating it. He didn’t have anything against this girl, he barely knew her for a start. 

“Yer had to shoot with it yet?” His eyes scanned hers curiously. Was rare too see such bright eyes these days. But no one was innocent either, not when the world was going to complete and utter shit. So, instead, his serious expression turned back into one of amusement as he chuckled deeply, voice now raised as it had been earlier. “Well darlin’, if yer really wanna know, I was huntin’ for the good stuff. You get me? Yer, gotta have sumthin’ in this prision, best kind is usually in dem mattresses.”

“Yer would be best mindin’ yer own business baby cakes.” His voice was low and scratchy, eyes narrowing despite his calm features. He slowly approached the girl, gun held lazily in his hand as he eyed her up.  Merle wiped his knife against his shirt, getting as much blood off as he could. If things went south he may be in need of it again. 

He saw her eyes gaze down at his torso. He didn’t need to look down to see what she was looking at. His shirt was torn, what was left of it was damp and covered with his own blood. It wasn’t all fresh, hell, it wasn’t all his. He’d managed to sew it up as much as he could. It was a nasty sight given he’d only used wire to seal it. 

“Say, don’t happen to have any equipment on yer?” He’d take it whether she agreed or not. He could already feel his wound becoming infected, sweat dripping off him more then ever before. Hell, he knew he could die if he didn’t treat it. Merle was tough but even this was too much for him to handle.

It’s a surprised she’s been stopped by someone, most tended to leave her be & go about her own business - though, she certainly doesn’t mind helping wherever it’s needed. Course she knows some of her car’s, more so her own Jeep than the car he’s bent over.

“Know my own girl better than this thing - but doesn’t mean I can’t help. Not startin’ up ? Did you check the spark plugs ? “

“Yer, ain’t nothin’.” Merle frowned, hand to his chin as he inspected the car from afar, taking a few steps back before cursing to himself. “Pile of shit. Ain’t gonna get this sucker workin’.” His eyes began to scan the roads. Merle made his way over to the girl and patted her shoulder, tilting his head in the direction he’d started to walk in. “C’mon, yer can help me find another one.” He was sure that someone in this safe zone had a working car. Or at least one he could hot wire. Could have this girly keep watch, just in case someone who knew the man spotted him. They didn’t exactly agree with his way of doing things after all.
